from Dixons Summary: I wanted an affordable photo printer for home use. Initial purchase of an Epson 830U from Simply Computers proved futile: used, broken, immediately returned. Looking for alternative, and happy to stick with Epson as I use their products at work, found a returned 900 in Dixons with a full guarantee for £70. The box was open so I had to check that everything was in place - it was, but cartridges were already loaded. Fearing little or no ink I pointed this out to the manager, who dropped the price to £49.95 - around $90!
Have since found print quality impeccable. Much of my personal work is b&w, and grayscale files print beautifully. Driver software appears basic / unintimidating. Advanced options are offered, but I have yet to bother with them - I just select "Best Quality" and the correct paper type. Strengths: Image quality is breathtaking.
CD labelling ability (not used but nice to have it). Weaknesses: Separate cartidges for each of the colours would be an improvement - I believe the latest Epsons in this price bracket offer this.
Relative speed (Canon reputed to be faster). Similar Products Used: Epson Stylus Photo 870
Epson Stylus Photo 890 Customer Service: None needed yet, although an honourable mention should go to the Dixons manager who dropped the price for me!
