Review 1 of 10

Price Paid:  $160.00 from Comp USA

Model Reviewed:
Epson 870

Summary:

The Epson 870 produces high quality photos on the best Epson papers and outstanding photos on Epson Premium Glossy Photo paper. Plain print is on par with most printers in its price range.

Strengths:

Photo quality is outstanding with Epson Premium Glossy Photo paper.

Weaknesses:

Plain print quality is good but not great.

Review 2 of 10

Price Paid:  $170.00

Summary:

this was purchased as an adjunct to my older (refurbished) Stylus Color 800 because I felt the photo output on that one was wanting. What a great decision on my part!!! This little beauty, while admittedly not a speed demon, does so nicely that I do ALL my photo printing at home, even bypassing CVS and Walgreens who have in-store printing machines that can accept CF cards. It's relatively quiet, and contrary to other reviews I've read, isn't a real drinker when it comes to ink. Compatible cartridges can be found, like at Carrot Ink which perform nicely but cannot promise the lightfastness Epson does for prints using both their inks and papers. Well worth my investment!

Strengths:

Relatively quiet, not real thirsty based on my needs.

Weaknesses:

Wouldn't use as a primary printer - but for photo output only, it's really great!

Similar Products Used:

HP Deskjet 5550, which was more expensive and didn't give me anywhere near the output quality. Newest printer in my home is the Stylus Photo 890, based on my experience with the 870, which is now goi

Customer Service:

Epson has always been responsive and helpful; I have no complaints at all!

Review 3 of 10

Price Paid:  $150.00 from Factory refurbished

Model Reviewed:
epson 870

Summary:

I''ve purchased 3 of these printers(2 as gifts), all at different times. All of them produce excellent images and pictures, with no grainey-ness. Installation was a breeze. Print speed is acceptable, but I don''t do volume. It''s quite, but it loves to drink INK. At least it seems that way. Ink is expensive and Im beginning to search for on-line sources, rather then Office max, or stables.

Strengths:

color, clarity, quite

Weaknesses:

ink consumption (other wise i''d give it 5 stars across the board)

Review 4 of 10

Price Paid:  $0.00

Summary:

I have had this printer for about 2 months now after trading up from an Epson 740 and it does a fantastic job. I thought the 740 was good but it is not in the same league with the 870. I have used five printers in the last two years, three from Epson and two from HP and this is by far the best of all for all purposes.

Strengths:

As close as they come to life like color and when printing text it is crisp and dark as it should be.

Weaknesses:

Like all Epsons, it likes to use lots of ink.

Review 5 of 10

Price Paid:  $300.00 from Insight UK

Summary:

If you want a printer just for photos, then this is the one to go for! Don't waste it by printing other stuff off on it though - it's expensive! I use an EPL5700 laser printer for that.
Providing you use the right (Epson) paper (Premium Glossy Photo Paper is the best stuff, particularly if you don't want it to fade) and ink (if you're in the UK, buy it from Photoglossy.com, they're by far the cheapest), you'll get amazing results every time.
Also produces great black and white results on Epson Matt Photo Paper.

Strengths:

Amazing quality prints
Affordable
Quiet
Fast
Runs off a standard IEC lead, not a transformer
Good colourfastness (with right paper)
Cheap ink

Weaknesses:

Ink might be cheap, but you get through it quickly
Needs right paper

Similar Products Used:

None, although I have a Stylus Color 670 as well

Customer Service:

Never needed
