Price Paid:  $90.00

Summary:

i am a photographer and use this printer for mostly photo use. The prints i get from it are amazing the color saturation and everything. It's quick to when printing B&W text. however it is lound and a bit slow when printing 4800x1200 colour prints.

Strengths:

-colour -4800x1200dpi -speed on B&W text

Weaknesses:

-cost of ink (not harrable) -loud (who cares not like it matters that much)

Similar Products Used:

-epons -canons (very nice)

Review 2 of 8

Price Paid:  $100.00 from Circuit City

Model Reviewed:
Hewlet-Packard 5550

Summary:

I had this printer for two days before I returned it. The photos it prints are absolutely beautiful (Easily as good as epson)and hp's premium + photo papers are fantastic. The only problem I really had was that I could not get this printer to print 8.5X11 photos with an even border all the way around no matter what I tried(I used ACDsee,Paintshop Pro 7 and Photoshop Elements 1.0 and triple checked every setting but I consistently got photos with no border (or a very tiny one) on the left and a 1" or 1/2" border on the right. Also the last photo I tried to print before I took it back came out all black (There were no low ink warnings before this).

Strengths:

Fantastic photos Text is far better than epson except the C-80

Weaknesses:

Doesn't like to print even-bordered 8.5X11;ink cartiges are TINY and way too expensive (I thought Epson was bad...) You have to swap out the photo cartrige to print text (and wait about 2 minutes while the printer resrts itself)

Review 3 of 8

Price Paid:  $0.00

Summary:

Great photo and text printer! I purchased at an Office Max on sale for $99.99. It prints just as well as it's latest cousins (all those ones that HP makes with slots for memory cards), and yet, also prints text nicel and sharply. I printed an image of a scanned photo taken on a regular 35mm. I had the image blown up considerably (to fit 8.5 X 11.0" photo paper). It printed out wonderfully!

Review 4 of 8

Price Paid:  $118.00 from Sam's Club

Model Reviewed:
HP deskjet 5550

Summary:

On a budget, I wanted a printer that could deliver great photoquality while at the same time being useful for occasional document printing and I got it! The 5550 prints detailed, sharp photos that are essentially photolab quality when the optional photoinkcartridge is used. I use either HP premium glossy or premium plus matte photopaper now, but have also used kodak premium high gloss with great results. I was surprised to find that my colorcartridge lasted through 50+ 8x10's (on highest quality setting!) PLUS 75 color flyers (on "everyday" quality setting)!! I was expecting much less, considering reviews I have read... My photo cartridge is still going strong, but I do not use that for every photo, only about 50% of them. Overall I'm very pleased with this printer and would recommend it to anyone, maybe more expensive dedicated photoprinters can deliver better results but I'm very happy with the quality of the 5550! I have not had any problems with borderless 4x6's at all, and any and all special projects I have printed such as photomagnets and t-shirt transfers have come out looking great!

Strengths:

great photoquality, fast and nice looking black text printing, economical

Weaknesses:

Slow printing photos, a bit noisy. No USB cable included, but I had one from my old printer anyways! ;-)

Review 5 of 8

Price Paid:  $200.00 from Future Shop

Model Reviewed:
hp deskjet 5550

Summary:

fantastic printer! its black text prints are almost laser jet like (as another reviewer pointed out), and when printing color text it looks just as great! I've used HP premium plus paper and printed out some fantastic looking 4 x 6 and 5 x 7 photos. Prior to printing I turn up the contrast, put overall color settings to a little more 'warmer' and more 'muted', and the results are fantastic. I hardly use 35mm film anymore!

Strengths:

- great quality at a decent price - prints great photos, and if manipulated properly (with Photoshop sofware and whatnot...) unreal! - for basic black text, I recommend using 'fastdraft' mode, it prints quicker and quality is still good! (and you use up less ink..duhh)

Weaknesses:

- pretty noisy (not when printing, but when loading up paper)
