S-T-U-R-D-Y. Ries rates it to something like 30lbs, but I can sit on it and it doesn't budge. Mine is about 30 years old and had been used by another photographer in the field for most of the time, and while it doesn't look new, it has worn much better than any metal tripod ever could. The variable angle locks on the legs are a godsend as are the spiked feet.

Heavy as all heck, but that's to be expected of a tripod this size. Also a little long, but again, that's to be expected. Overall, no real gripes.

If you shoot 8x10 or larger, this is THE tripod to be sure. You will never have to worry about your tripod not being sturdy enough when you're using one of these. A word to the wise, though, look for one used- new Ries stuff will drain your bank account like mad. That said, if I ever have to replace this tripod, I think I would pay the new price if I had to.
