Review 1 of 3

Price Paid:  $200.00 from Used

Summary:

It holds my camera perfectly stable in heavy wind (35mm with 300mm lens). Adjustments are quite sticky, needs some force to get the ball moving, but when it moves it moves smoothly. Oil only makes it worse. Adjustments are easier with a heavier load. During a recent trip both the ball-lock screw and the pan-lock screw fell off. Not because they were not durable but they unscrewed themselves when in contact with moving clothes, so I have to fix some new screws. The friction control works fine and the friction control knob has a profressional feel. Im using the RC4 version, nice plate system I think.

Strengths:

Good stability and fast locking. Panning is very smooth. Friction control works well. Looks good.

Weaknesses:

Fine adjustments are not easy to make with smaller loads. Locking screws can get lost.

Review 2 of 3

Price Paid:  $180.00 from OpsTech

Summary:

While some might argue that it's not quite an Arca-Swiss B1, it is a fine, smooth head with a lot to like. First of all, beautifully made, with engraved lettering and an excellent anodized finish. All controls work smoothly, and has a convienent and finely calibrated azimuth protractor for pano use. Mine is the 468RC model with built-in quick release feature, but this is perhaps its weakest point. It needs a better, more stable Q/R to enable its use for a wider range of lenses & applications.

Strengths:

Solid, well-built--definitely a high-quality device that should provide a lifetime of service. Smooth and even ball operation, easy to control.

Weaknesses:

Small Q/R provided with RC model fails to provide sufficient stability for much more than a camera and standard lens, but for this is excellent. Head is moderately heavy, but perhaps seems moreso because of its compactness. Ordered an Arca-Swiss plate adapter that may solve the Q/R problem, but this is TBD.

Similar Products Used:

Gitzo G1576, Bogen 308RC, smaller balls.

Customer Service:

None needed.

I bought this to replace the Manfrotto 308RC ProBall. This bigger ball is very strudy and allows smoth operation. I have tested it with a 300/2.8 with attached 2xExtender and it work very fine.

Strengths:

Heavy Smoth

Weaknesses:

The Quick-Release.
