Bogen/Manfrotto 3437 3D Magnesium Head

I upgraded to this head from the 141RC 3-way head because the controls on that one stuck out so much. Also I need to fly regularly and with a big, heavy head like the 141RC it's a bit of a drag. Either way, this head - also known as the 460MG (Manfrotto) - is light, compact and sturdy/stable enough to hold my 10D + grip + 70-200mmL glass up without flexing. I can imagine heavier cameras would have more trouble with this head, but for my purpose it's perfect. I like the 'free movement' mode (all knobs loosened) that you can move your camera in virtually any position without operating levers. Just hold the camera and point, then fix the knobs. But, with all due respect, this head is suitable for sports and other things that need quick movement. For studio or macro work I'd recommend a heavier, more precise head than this.

Weight, price, build quality, spirit level, smooth action, non-obstrusive levers/knobs, stable quick release (+lock), stability for 35mm cameras, markings on inner ring for precise pano work.

Knobs may be too small for people with big hands, 'bouncing' when heavy cameras are placed, feels very loose & shaky when all knobs are untightend.

Also known as the Manfrotto 460Mg, this is a nice compact, leightweight head that is sturdy enough for substantial 35mm gear or lightweight medium format cameras. I am using it together with Manfrotto 055PRO legs. Despite its light weight, this head feels very solid, due to its cast magnesium construction. My Nikon F80 looks and feels great mounted on this head- it could have been made for it. It provides a very sturdy platform and offers versatile and precise 3-way adjustments. The head has an integral spirit level which makes it easy to get level horizons. The quick release plate is small and discrete, and it's made of metal. The plate doesn't snap into place quite as positively as on my ballhead, and needs wiggling around a bit to get it seated properly. But this may get easier with use. With my heavy Pentax 6x7 mounted on it, this head does flex a little, and would probably do little to suppress the vibrations from the heavy reflex mirror. So I would say that this head is not suitable for heavy medium format gear- a sturdy ballhead is probably more suitable.
