Summary:

I use this scanner mainly to scan from colour & B&W neg at the max dpi. The results are then used on the web, publishing and printing onto conventional photographic paper using an online lab. Kodachrome is very difficult to scan. Blacks tend to be noisy if one attempts to salvage what little shadow detail there is. Lower contrast emulsions work better. I find that neg generally works well. Be prepared to use some unsharp mask in Photoshop after (even professional drum scans need some USM). Colours can be a little wild (greens in particular) which means that you will need to fiddle a little in Photoshop again. 10x7 digital prints onto conventional paper are just as crisp as direct prints straight from the neg. Taking the digital route alows one to contol shadow and highlight details better (and of course one can retouch and blemishes). This scanner IS supported by XP, use the Windows 2000 driver option on the installation disk. Summary:

The FS2710 was a great scanner for the price, 3 years back. I have used A LOT. Actually it is more or less worn out after som 10.000 scans. It has its limitations though. The software included douesn't deliver veru accurate colors so instead I use VueScan and simply do RAW scans. You usually get all the information with negatives this way so for that it's great if you use it with VueScan and the 'long exposure mode'. A bit weaker on slides since it has a hard time with the darker tones.By now more modern scanners as the Minolta DiMAGE Scan Elite 5400 has left this in the dust. Colors are a bit dull and needs to be pumped up in PS.

• Price at the time • Fairly quick • Decent image quality

Weaknesses:

• Has come to age • SCSI-interface

Summary:

This is a fairly good scanner. Easy to install with Windows 98/ME, quite difficult with Windows 2000 PRO. After some trials, I managed to have it working also after my upgrade to Win2000 pro. Images are sharp, noise is low, focus is very weel automatically calibrated. Scanning slides gives good results, but colors tend to be bluish and dynamic range on the lower levels is poor. Scanning negatives is very difficult. Colors are always different and poorly match the originals. Dynamic range is much better than with slides, because the scanner is good at highest luminance levels (blacks when inverted). Was good for the time when I bought it (3 years ago).

Bad colors with negatives Slow preview Compressed dynamic range Too much heat inside tends to ruin films

Summary:

Good scanner if you know how to install software for it (Windows 2000). SCSI needs some tweaking and driver downloading. Also must be turned on before the computer (still talking about Windows 2000. Scans very well. Using Canon softweare - no further color correction needed for slides as well as negatives and B&W. Requires properly exposed film to get best results.

Strengths:

Price, Included software has great automatic color correction. Manual adjustments not so good, but usually not needed.

DMAX

Summary:

I have this scanner since august 1999 and I never stop to love it. You can increase is performances if you use the Ed Hamrick software called «VueScan» who provide long exposure pass and multiscan pass (fonctions not available with Canocraft software). Always with VueScan, you will get outstanding color management et exposure (same as the oroginal slide). VueScan is operational with all OS (Win, Mac OS and even Linux). The FS 2710 is the best scanner from is category.

Weaknesses:

Fonctions not available with CanoCraft software: - No batch scanning - No Multipass
