Review 1 of 22

Price Paid:  $500.00 from local computer store

Summary:

When the camera was delivered, it had the worst 1400mAh NiMH batteries I ever used. So I build myself a external portable power supply using a 12V 6Ah battery which keeps the camera working for more than 3 hours with the LCD permanently switched on. Since I bought some new 1800mAh NiMH's, I rarely use the external supply anymore. Picture quality is great; I use the camera with USB and Linux and rarely have any problems. When I bought 128MB, the camera used to lock up every couple of pictures. Since I use 64MB, this went down to once every 100 pictures or so.

Strengths:

Easy to use, good picture quality, fully remote controllable through USB, robust.

Weaknesses:

Slow in everything, battery-eater, cannot handle large memory modules without locking problems.

Review 3 of 22

Price Paid:  $500.00 from HP web site

Summary:

I have had alot of fun with the camera/printer pair. Have taking alot of pictures and sent them to grandparents via the web and they love them. Pictures in high res mode look pretty nice when printed in 8x10 format. I have dropped this camera several times and its keeps on going. Also The software package is easy to learn. I have not had a problem with battery life as I find I do not use LCD when taking pictures. Usually take pictures on family trips events and do not have time to review pics then anyway. Dissappointed the USB does not work and have had problem with some of the more advanced features such as taking 10 pictures in one second.(Video mode picture taking) The documentation could be better here.

Strengths:

Nice pictures and robust camera that will not get damaged easy. Zooms well and has auto flash.

Weaknesses:

Poor USB, low battery life, advanced features not explained well in documentation.

Review 4 of 22

Price Paid:  $633.00 from Provantage

Summary:

The C500 provided a disappointing and frustrating creative experience each time I tried to use it. It''s hard to get used to "turning the camera on" each time you want to take a photo, or feeling the power drain as you walk through a park looking for a scene to snap. This isn''t a point and shoot camera. If and when it didn''t electronically and mechanically lock up with the lense extended, it sucked up battery power as if it were running a tiny city inside. What images I was able to take looked great but its mechanical and electronic weaknesses took away all the fun of photography.

Strengths:

It''s high res pics look exceptional.

Weaknesses:

Too many things go wrong; lock-up, power drain, slow mechanics, just too big for your pocket, excessively engineered for non-photographic features.

Similar Products Used:

I take more excellent stills with my Sony TRV900 digital video camera than the HR C500. It has an 8 hr battery and excellent viewfinder screen for taking unusual shots. The video camera is a better

Customer Service:

I wish the the HP500 camera was as wonderful a product as the their P1100 color printer. I bought both at the same time with hopes they would make a pair. NO!

Weaknesses:

Battery life is just plain horrible.

Customer Service:

HP should refund money back to customers, or give a big discount for upgrade, because this camera is a dud.
