Review 1 of 5

Price Paid:  $0.00

Summary:

This is a very special film, designed not only for C-41 process, but also to be copied on regular color paper in ordinary RA-4 minilabs (this is why it has orange mask and lowered contrast). Poor results reported by previous reviewers are due to the fact that this film is NOT PRIMARILY INTENDED for use in conventional B/W darkroom.

Strengths:

Gives excellent results when printed in minilabs. Due to orange mask and contrast similar to color negatives needs no special adjustment. Scans very easily and can be used in digital minilabs as well. In both cases shows exceptionally fine grain, rich midtones, deep blacks and beautiful, creamy whites.

Weaknesses:

Not suited for conventional B/W enlargers. Low contrast (compared to traditional silver-based films) makes conventional enlargement difficult, especially on multigrade paper, when orange mask lowers contrast even more (acts as a yellow filter).

Similar Products Used:

Never heard of any similar product. XP-2 and TMX 400 CN are NOT similar.

Customer Service:

not needed

Review 2 of 5

Price Paid:  $2.00 from Kodak Phot Express

Summary:

My first experience with this film type. I was surprised with the grain nearly invisible and the gray scale reproduction. The contrast is bit lower than I am used to but most images printed to normal grade paper. Perfect for subminiature formats, much better than regular bw films at same speed (also tried in Minox format Yashica and 16mm Minolta).

Strengths:

Low grain, unified (C41) processing, price comparable to regular bw films

Weaknesses:

lower contrast, the orange mask complicates bw printing

Review 4 of 5

Price Paid:  $3.00 from Local Konica's print service

Summary:

Film for test - new issued, processed immediately on the Konica's film processor.
Always used bracketing +/- 2/3. In the sunlight condition (bright sunny snow), or with
halogen lights with flash for indoor - in all cases pictures looks as maked under
cloudly grey sky. Printed on B/W paper or on color paper - unsharp, grainy picture
looks unclear. Not good even for young amateurs, money for nothing...

Strengths:

Nothing!

Weaknesses:

Low contrast, unpleasant form grain

Review 5 of 5

Price Paid:  $3.00 from shop

Summary:

testing 5 films it was not possible to get results with an aceptable contrast. all prints were dark grey on light grey; no black and no white. monochrome is the right label, b&w would be too much.

Strengths:

no special strengths compared to XP2

Weaknesses:

very low contrast

Ilford XP2
