Review 1 of 28

Price Paid:  $700.00 from Tri State

Summary:

I selected this camera over the Cannon G3 a year ago because it rated and reviewed similarly but looked more professional. It can take great large photos and even does Tiff & RAW although I have never used those options. The dual memory cards are great and the AA battery is great when in a bind. Deffinately go for the rapid charger cuz' it will charge in half the time and if you are shooting for more than 3 hour events then get a second battery set. The one main problem I have had is the automatic focus being very picky indoors.

Strengths:

Point & Click capabilities with a prfessional look. Great quality photos Dual memory cards.

Weaknesses:

View finder doesn't rotate down far enough. Doesn't always shoot when you push button in low lt indoor situations.

Review 2 of 28

Price Paid:  $329.00 from ebay

Summary:

I've loved the Olympus C-series throughout, and the C-5050 has added some nice improvements. At current (July 2004) prices this camera has a lot of bang for the buck. Many reviewers gripe about the lack of higher zoom, but that is virtually impossible to do (at least cost-effectively) while maintaining an f1.8 lens. I'd rather keep the f1.8 lens. If you really want zoom capability, go with the C-5060. But then you'll settle for an f2.8 lens. It's the same tradeoff with all cameras. The image quality continues to be near flawless. It's so good I usually am lazy and shoot in Program mode. I don't quite understand the color problems noted by other users; that has never been my experience, and I don't tend to manipulate the default settings except to underexpose by -0.3 or -0.7 stops occasionally. The manual is basically worthless, but Olympus has recently upgraded their web resources and a lot of useful info can be gathered there. There are also a number of online user groups that are helpful. If you like a hard copy reference, "A Short Course in Olympus C-5050 Photography" is an excellent book, available at amazon.com.

Strengths:

Overall Design, grip, new on/off toggle independent of mode dial, ability to use SmartMedia and CompactFlash simultaneously, new pivoting LCD, 10-element f1.8 lens, ability to use recharg. AA batteries.

Weaknesses:

Incomplete & non-user-friendly Product Manual, limited view viewfinder (not an issue if compose through LCD, which I receommend)

Review 4 of 28

Price Paid:  $517.00

Summary:

Going from a film SLR camera to this camera frustrated me when it came to taking shots where your subject is moving. Pretty much have to anticipate by half pressing the shutter button and pressing it at the right moment which is often hit or miss. Not recommended for action photography especially with the limited zoom. Great camera for taking still shots. I took some great portraits and macro shots as long as the subject wasn't moving. A few times I've been noticing some purple fringing when taking some outdoor shots. A very light weight compact 5 megapixel camera with an LCD that can be angled up or down. Great when you want to travel light. Overall, a feature rich camera that just misses when it comes to action photography and zoom capabilities. However, this is comprable to most digital cameras in this class. In order to have these capabilites you'd probabaly have to be willing to spend more and jump up to a digital SLR.

Strengths:

Macro photography Portrait photography Solid build quality Dual card slots F1.8 Lens Saving several custom mode settings Live histogram Raw capabilities Able to record video the length of the card (I don't use this much but beats the 30 sec limitation you see in other cameras) Low price compared to other cameras in it's class

Weaknesses:

Action photography Have to remove lens cap prior to turning on camera unless you add on a lens tube adaptor. Poor manual. Viewfinder only around 80% of image. Takes time getting out of sleep mode. It's best to have a dps9000 so the camera can stay on.
