from Jessops UK Summary: This camera was bought on spur of the moment as my Fuji S9000 broke down and also second one,so just grabbed this as I am a camera junkie and need to have one.
Well, was I surprised! superb picture quality, great colour and shows lots of detail,it is of course only 5mp and delivers files of about 1.7 up to 2.3 mb so don`t expect dslr qulity but I have had some various experimental type photographs, giving the camera "a hard time",printed off at 10x8 inches and the photographs are a match for most cameras.
Macro is excellent, showing lots of detail-in fact I may show some pics I have taken if I think the downsizing hasn`t affected images too much. When one considers that buying this camera you are also buying a 1:1 and higher, macro lens,a 35-430 zoom with a fast shutter speed and will go up to about 900mm when using digital zoom, which is very acceptable. Then considering all this makes it one superb deal.I have never honestly had so much fun using a camera. The menu is a breeeze to use and only a couple of times I had to look in book to unstick me with something.Software is rubbish,I don`t know how Sony dare give this away to anyone.I download them and immediately transfer to Nikon capture and just use that.
It is a fast camera to use, again considering it is a p&s unit.I was aproaching a perched seagull and knew it was about to fly off so kept on shooting (in sports mode) and got all the shots I needed of its take off and escape.Only a couple were out of focus and that was I believe because I spun camera around and it was Englands usual dull and dreary day.
Picture review is very quick and the images can be really blown up to examine them, this is very good I found.
It says in instuction manual that autofocus can only be used at wide setting,ie. 35mm -this is not correct as I have zoomed out to maybe 100mm or so,I am not sure with the funny figures it shows, and can still focus ok but get to a certain point and close focus is not possible.I am sorry but I don`t know what that point is exactly--maybe as I said about 100mm or so,but from 2 inches away it really blows up whatever you are picturing.
Using the macro and flash button is simply one touch, white balance a couple more but camera is quick to scroll through menu.
I would certainly recommend this camera. Strengths: Excellent build quality--super image quality--great colours with plenty of scope for adjustments--fast in operation,in fact it feels like you could be using an entry level dslr as it fair rattles the pictures off, honesty, believe me it does--great great fun to use and so easy, anyone who claims it is complex to use well-doh!--I have not noticed much of an issue with purple fringeing,I did though turn contrast down so think that may be answer to improving that issue. My mate has a Canon S2-IS and his shows up much more than this Sony does,I have great fun winding him up about it.Lovely big, clear and accurate lcd screen.Comes with hood and extension tube for extra lenses--Canon charge extra for this, also comes with 2 recharchables and a battery charger--great consumer touch that is-well done Sony. Now give us some decent software please. Its also brilliantly packed in a super strong box. Please remember, when I mark it up I am not trying to compare it to a dslr,is being marked as a high end p&s. Weaknesses: Software disc supplied is an insult to the consumer-but I won`t mark them down for this as they give you -hood,batteries AND charger so that more than makes up for it.Wish the zoom button wasn`t in the natural position for resting right thumb as I am sick of zooming accidently, but suppose I will get used to that and learn to keep my digit out of the way.
