Strength:
Color and sharpness of photos taken outside in decent light.
Weakness:
Lens hood is not easy to attach and indoor shooting in low light can be disapionting. Some flair problems in tricky lighting conditions. I have used this lens for years and overall had very good results. It does have a tendency to flair if you are doing some sunsets or tricky lighting. The color for outside landscapes has been great. Faster autofocus higher speed apeture, maybe 2.8 It''s not the Tamron 24-135 I have no idea why everyone has been down on this lense. Because it''s one of the oldest of the new breeds of extra-wide angle zoom, it had it''s flaws in beginning manuacturing, but mine is sharp and has little aberration. Strength:
Good range, light weight. Optical results on Kodachrome slides indistinguishable from my Canon consumer zoom lenses.
Weakness:
Noisy focus motor. Rotating front element. Staining when rubber grips get wet from rain! A very useful, sharp and contrasty lens with no optical vices. Flares to easliy, though blocking the sun with a hand out of frame or an object in the frame solves the problem. Superb image quality at 5x7" and below. Excellent image sharpness at 8x10" (6x9" image) and decent/acceptable quality at 16x20." Other lenses in this focal length range seem to have quite evident barrel distortion at the wide end however this one's near rectilinear (sans linear distortion) throughout w/c makes it great for door edges, buildings, etc. Though not quite up to the superb magnificance in sharpness and contrast as my Maxxum 24-50mm lens or my 28mm and 16mm Zeiss SLR lenses, this lens delivers excellent quality and a good value for the money. When I got this lens it was the only option available for its zoom range in AF other than the Sigma, now that Canon has its own 24-85mm I am still glad I got this lens because it has much lower distortion at the wide end than the Canon lens. Unless you own a Maxxum camera (where you can get a 24-50mm Maxxum zoom lens of stellar quality), this is an excellent alternative to OEM manufacturer zooms in this range - get it! PS. - Nikon has just come out w/ a 24-85mm f/2.8 to f/4 lens whose faster aperture now makes that a lens to look into if you already own the Nikon brand (I don't but I figure I'd mention it as a faster OEM alternative to the Tamron). This Tamron was made for street shooting/events - 28mm just doesn't cut it for me anymore and the focal length is very flexible. Only faults of this lens (as mentioned above) are flare (veiling glare) from sun in or near the edge of the frame and a darkish f/5.6 aperture w/c means you get a darker viewfinder in the camera and need to use faster film (400 or better) in less than optimum light. Smallish lens. Close to "normal" lens in size, although a little larger in diameter. Not much light falloff at 24mm, even wide open. 62mm filter size.
Weakness:
Not very sharp optically, but maybe I bought a lemon. I bought it used at $105.00 on eBay. The seller on eBay probably laughed at me. I would not recommend this lens. Optics are not up to Nikkor standards by any means. But, this isn't their SP line. Customer Service None yet, unnless I get tired of this lack of sharpness and use the lens as a doorstop. Very usefull zoom range.
Weakness:
I mounted in to my Nikon FM for overseas pleasure tour. It makes the view finder dark and difficult to focus (of-course manually) beyond 50mm because of the small F5.6 opening aperture. This little baby is not as bad as someone had discribed in this panel. I've used it for light travelling since 1996. I brought it with me to Europe and the Middle East.
