    Strength:

excellent APO lens, there is no CA on this lens! The understated Minolta colors. The camera has every bell and whistle you can think of.

    Weakness:

The only weakness, and I don't really think it is, is the 5 megapixel ccd sensor . The 7x APO zoom more than compensates for the reduced resolution. No anti shake.

This camera is a real sleeper. I have compared it to the new models in it's lineage and to some of the hot 7-8 megapixel cameras. I think the APO lens on this camera is the reason that it still competes w/ cameras w/ 2 or 3 more megapixels. If you can get one of these, I would suggest you do.

    Strength:

*A whopping 5.2 megapixels (first non-interchangable lens 5 meg. camera). *28-200mm 2.8 (fast) apo lens with macro setting at wide and narrow focal lengths. *Built in orcid lens hood. *Bright lcd, and very bright 100% field of view EVF (personally I like and dislike this one, and at different times i see is as a weakness or just as what it is.) *Size, weight, and duribility.

    Weakness:

*No sync port for external flash packs. *small buffer size means long wait between shots in RAW or TIFF. *Battery comsumption. There is more that i could include here but the truth is that one must fly the pane for himeself before he knows how well it handles. This is a good camera but not perfect, as non are.

I want to start this off by stating that I do not agree with the retroactive renaming of a company's products simply because of a merger. I don't care how big the two manufacturers in question are. That aside I have had my 7i for just under a year and even though I feel like it is less camera than I need for what it is, and was at the time it was first released, the best camera in its class. I have created my best images with this camera, and it has naver let me down. It is a bit power hungry, and you do have to watch the focus, but if you are looking at cameras in this class you will find no better. If you are a pro, or advanced beyond camers such as rebel's or N80's then you need to be looking at actual digital slr's. This will not provide the quality, versitality, or feel of a true slr. Believe me I have found that out coming from the use of a minolta Maxxum 7, and the canon elan series. But if you are an amature looking for a good camera at agood price that will give you the best results in an easy enough to use format than this is the camera for you. All of the images here were shot with my 7i. http:\www.freewebs.com/digitaljc

    Strength:

excellent camera.. autofocus is actually fast (for a digital) compared to an n80 or my n90s its equal.. no it wont snap too like my f100. but hey theyve been perfectiong the slr for over 100 yrs.. Lets see how fas the digitals are in ... lets say 10 yrs..

    Weakness:

like any digital.. 6 months after you buy it new its worth only 1/2. Batteries.. it eats batteries quicker than a hound will chomp down a steak. 1800 nimh batteries.. dont't leave home without them.. or buck up and buy a battery pack.. if your going to seriously use this camera.. option 2

Everything I believe has been said.. but there is a review here that says he cant get exhibition quality prints from the d7 go to the chicago museum of art.. and take a look.. yes several of the photos there were indeed done with a minolta d7.. I myself can only print A3 but after I use the desharpen mask in photoshop I can print a3 that shows the hairs on a spider without any jaggies or distortions.

    Strength:

Magnesium alloy body, lens (zoom range is widest, resolution, contrast). In camera features are second to none - (histograms, white balance, saturation & contrast controls)! Logical, intuitive controls are easy for an SLR user, FEELS better than some competing models, 7 frame buffer, accepts up to 1 GB CF or Microdrive media, PRICE/Value

    Weakness:

Black grip really does feel cheap and plasticky as others have noted. Does not have "step" in between Fine and Superfine like 7hi. No remote or a/c adapter supplied with camera. No Photo processing program supplied with camera.

I purchased this camera after pouring over reviews of all the 5MP cameras including the interchangeable lens SLR's. I also used friends cameras (all lower MP ratings though), and handled the other direct competition models "in store". Settled on this one over other brands and it's big brother due to price/features considerations - as a friend said - this is the "sweet spot" in digital SLR right now... No previous digital cameras owned. To start with, it FEELS more like an SLR than some of the competition to me - I found the controls to be logical, intuitive, and easy to select, master - very much like your standard AF SLR today - SLR users should have no issues adapting to a camera like this. I like that the body is a magnesium alloy and not all plastic - although it does LOOK kinda that way. In camera features are outstanding, saturation, contrast compensation, white balance, histograms, everything is in camera - no wonder they don't package with Photoshop - although it would be nice to have! AF is fast (though not as fast as my N80) - the lens it sharp and smooth - exposure controls are excellent in program or any of the manual modes. Aperture is a little limited only going to f11 but Minolta assures us that with a CCD this is actually great depth of field. It does CHOW alkaline batteries - get an extra set but no charger - the camera is supplied with a quick charger! All in all - I do not believe you will find a better camera at this price point!!
