Strength:

Speed! I can't stress this enough. I'm sure there are some pro models out that are faster, but this camera is amazingly fast! Quality - the image quality is amazing, very suitable for large prints.

Weakness:

Software. The software is very average, and I have had a couple freezes when uploading large amounts of pics.

After spending the last 4-5 years using digital point and shoot cameras, it feels amazing to have a nice SLR in my hands again. I heard so many negatives about the size, but I have small fingers and the rebel xt feels great in my hands. The speed compared to P&S digitals is unbeleivable with super fast start up times, fast focusing and even faster burst speeds. I am simply blown away by the speed of this camera. I love the auto bracketing feature. I just got a 16x20 back from Mpix that looked absolutely perfect, even after I did some cropping, I couldn't beleive it. This camera has a better picture quality than my canon Elan 7N, I was absolutely stunned. This camera is great for anyone looking for and entry level DSLR. This camera has in made film completely obsolete for me. It so good I'm selling my darkroom and sticking to photoshop! The price Was more than acceptable, I had for a long time had made up my mind that when a good Canon DSLR came around that was under $1000 I would jump on it. I decided the last digital rebel wasn't quite ready, boy am I glad I waited! A

Strength:

its mighty little and tiny...and light..and cutie..BUT?? hmmm ..i dont know..

Weakness:

too many i gues..

I debated if i should buy this one as a back up for a back up,but in the end i for now think it was the right decision,im carefully not to be too hasty anymore with very conform statements as i think its better to give all good things a chance in life. And so w this little machine the Canon XT rebel (350 D in Europe)well,i tested the item at a respected canon dealer and guess what ? it misled by back focus much more horrible than anything i tested before! grrr..none of my pics was sharp.!? how come? hmrumph. well, i gave up and decided for the other option a brand new Canon 10 D .YUMMI..and this is another story( this was and item who stood sharp as a knife ! with no back focus at all! i dont think i will go for the XT/350 ,(the 10 D is much more Pro like) and i think the XT it is too little and fragile, even w battery pack on and the shutter sounds ..like a pint ball game.and the view finder is only a little better than 300 d and.....and....hmm..i dont now yet ...no i stay for the 10 D or the XTs bigger brother 20D!

Strength:

Small and lightweight(surprised? read on...), great images, good feature set, low noise, fairly speedy

Weakness:

Aperture/exp comp button hard to hold down while changing, no ISO setting on-screen or in viewfinder

Great camera for the $$. Minor complaints about size not justified: If it were bigger my wife wouldn't use it, and therefore, I would not have this camera. You may borrow this selling point if you're trying to sell your spouse. Plus it is friggin' light and fits with a few lenses and filters into very small cam bags. Anyway, the images I am getting are fantastic. Kit lens not so hot, but a 50mm f1.4 is a great start if you want to see beautiful color, contrast and clarity. Not having ISO on LCD or viewfinder big mistake, but forgivable...Av comp button diffcult to hold down while spinning dial, PLUS you have to check each time to make sure you are hitting the correct button. Complaints about menu justified on brightness, but in terms of use 4 silver jump buttons solve most issues. Softness issues: camera set soft, just kick up the settings in the menus or photoshop, it's all good. Love it.

Strength:

The camera does nearly everything that I wish. Also it is blazingly fast. Focusing, and overall apparent accuracy of exposure (and 8 megapixels) enable wonderful photographs.

Weakness:

-no spot-meter -screens are small and a bit difficult in bright sun - moving thru menus is a not as easy as I'd like

These comments are really intended for folks, like me, who are moving from a quality p&s prosumer type of digital camera (non SLR) to a digital SLR. The two biggest gripes in web forums about the XT rebel have been its size, and the menu system (also some quality control issues re focusing). If you are moving from a smaller camera as I am, then the small size and weight of the XT is great. It is still bigger than any p&s, yet it is nowhere near as large and heavy as the pro dslrs. I used to use a large SLR (Nikon F2), but it turned out to be so large and heavy that I often didn't take it out. This is not going to be nearly as much of an issue for the XT As far as the menu system and controls. Functionality could be improved, but I don't have major gripes. It would be nice to have more info in the viewfinder (iso is not there). The viewfinder is not large, but you can certainly focus on things. Maybe there are some contexts, in which depth-of-field is critical, that you might want to focus better. In this regard - it is sometimes overlooked that the XT has a dof preview button - a very nice feature. Other non-critical shortcomings: There is not a spot-meter for adjusting exposure. The best you can do is to use the central region of the image for exposure settings. This is almost always enough. The lcd and information screens are on the small side, and are not great in bright large.

Strength:

Great image quality. I find even the 800 and 1600 ISO to be acceptable to my needs. Additionally, the camera seems very easy and intuitive. After a few tests, I had the hang of the basic functions.

Weakness:

Construction, while better than I had imagined, still could be better. Also wish this SLR used its LCD as a pre-shot monitor (wishful thinking...)

I wanted to move up from film SLRs and digital point and shoot (Olympus C5050). Having considered the Oly E300 and the Canon 20D, I settled on the XT as soon as it was announced. I have not regretted the decision. The fact I already had Canon glass made it a better buy than the E300, and the few advantages of the 20D (very few)meant the XT was better value for money. One great camera!
