Strength:

ALL>>>-weatherproof ..fast fast fast strong strong strong .- super fast A F ..heavy and good made...

Weakness:

eats battery ..especially the >old>Nikon D1 cam..but the new ones is okay!BUT you can buy 2 hand battery cheaply! otherwise they are perfect

This is a review for the Nikon D1 series and especially Nikon D1H(and the D1,a little).;a true Legend and Cult status of Digital SLR. I bought this D1H used for 624 usd and oh boy!! ... this is a very capable camera.!!!dont let the 2,7 Mg Pix fool you! its very good at any levels, clear, clean sharp ,perfect files..with little work in PS..,..remember that a pic taken with a Nikon D1H has covered the front page of Sports illustrated! ..and also National Geographic ,and The Times and so on so forth and still does ...)..and newspapers all around the world still use BOTH the Nikon D1 and Nikon D1H and X as well!! i have seen many pro PJ shooting with this wonderfull machine working with this DSLR until this day! In many 3.countries in africa ,asia, and latinamerica the Prof photojournalists who work hard make a living with this camera every single day and it is bullet proof;...i have even heard of some Nikon D1 shooting more than 500.000 exposures!! wauw!! its as strong and handsome as it looks like, very powerfull and a true CULT camera for everyone getting serious into PROF photography! ..pair this with the new Nikon SB600 flash and set it -7 and the shot is perfectly exposed.I myself Use two D1H mated with a Nikkor 17-55 and 80-200 both AFS models and my editor is so happy with the shots i got! For sports i use the Nikon 300 and the 80-200 and 400 mm and my editor is so happy!...for PJ work i use 24-85 and 17-55 ..and get the cream....i did something crazy lately :>>.. ....recently i restored my Nikon D1 H for 675 dollars(new shutter and control, rubber ..and alike...).. instead of buying a new or slightly used Nikon D2H ! ??is it not silly?reason?? because its better and cheaper and the D1H make usable iso 1600!! in the end i safed a lot of money instead of jumping to the megapixel stuff!. This Camera series of Nikon D1(H and X)is still a true legend among photographers all over the world.....it is so good made olks; FRemember its still the(wo) man behind the cam!!?!!who takes the pic!

Strength:

Speed, Black and White, lens adaptability, user controls, virtually no learning curve coming from F5, size of media,

Weakness:

MOIRE, color tone, auto white balance controls

I use the D1 8 hours per day 5 days per week for international catalogue and commercial shooting. A traditionalist at heart, I came to digital photography with some amount of hesitation. I find the D1 to be superior quality for black and white portraiture...but lacking in color. I realize the magenta cast, etc can be corrected via software, but it just doesn''t come close to film in my opinion. The single BIGGEST problem I have with the camera is moire. A great amount of product shot for our catalogue is tapestry/wovens, and there is a terrible problem with moire. Smooth surfaces do not have the same issue. Several reviews I have read make note of this fact, so if I wonder why the D1 was recommended to the company before I got here. :) I am getting the D1X within a few weeks, and look forward to the lower ISO and doubled resolution.

Strength:

Feels and operates like a real camera. Great image quality. 1/500 flash sync. They're a joy to use... when they're working.

Weakness:

4 out of the 5 D-1's we bought in Feb. of 2000 have failed. 1 failed to operate with any AF or AF-D lens after 2 months of use. The photog had to finish assignment by unlocking lens from camera and holding it to the mount, fooling the camera into firing as if no lens was attached. 1 failed to recognize any CF card being present afer 5 months of use. 1 shutter failed after 2 months of use. 1 aperture adjusting arm fell off after 3 months of use. Other gripes-1.5x focal length magnification sucks but is to be expected. Rubber grip material falling off on 3 of the cameras. Last but not least, my biggest gripe (when the cameras are working) is that when using the SB-28DX in TTL, it fires a preflash that triggers slaves making me have to use Manual or Auto settings on the flash. This doesn't happen with the film cameras. Kinda makes me wish that I'd saved the money on the flash and bought a bunch of Vivitar 285's instead. Oh yeah, If you live in a humid climate, DO NOT use IBM Microdrives. We've experienced 100% failure on 5 drives in less than 2 months. The compact flash cards have performed flawlessly.

Great camera when its working but, apparently (at least for our staff) the build quality just isn't up to the same standards that other Nikon Professional equipment has been in the past.

Customer Service

Great, I just wish that I didn't have to deal with them so often.

Strength:

Excellent quality images
Matches my old Nikon lenses
Made me buy the fantastic17-35mm lens!

Weakness:

Crappy screen-cover
The thumbgrip rubber fell off after a few weeks - I lost it.
Too slow in automatic sequence.
The whitebalance settings fooled me several times.

Get one, but keep your filmbased cameras as well.
I have never been happier with my 300mm/f4 which now equals 450mm!

Customer Service

In Norway: very good, but the screencover is not sold as a spare yet.

Strength:

This is a Professional Nikon Camera with all that name implies.
Near Total Nikon System Compatability.
Works and feels like a real camera.
Massive amount of image storage when IMB 340mb card is used (244 images at fine resolution)
My editors and art directors love the results.
Savings on Film, Processing and the time to get those things done will eventually pay for the investment of the camera.

Weakness:

SUCKS batteries, especially if editing images in the field on the LCD.
1.5x focal length meant effectively having to shell out additional big bucks for the Nikkor 17-35 zoom and a Tamrom 14mm, so I could have the same wide angle coverage I'm used to shooting with my F5. Conversersely my Nikkor 180 2.8 is a 270 2.8 on this camera which is pretty cool.

If you do a lot of quick turn around photojournalism as I do. This camera rules.
I only wish it was half the price so I could afford a second one.

Strength:

Seamless intergration with other Nikon Pro products
Enables me to turn some jobs around almost instantly
Even my 1972 105/2.5 Nikkor lens works like a dream with it!
Designed by photographers, unlike many other digital cameras
Built like a tank, as I've come to expect with Nikon pro products.

Weakness:

One must be attentive to white balance settings
Easy to smudge LCD
Lame software provided

The introduction of this camera has enabled me to shoot digital photos sooner than I'd expected because of its low cost. It isn't perfect, but for the money it is far and away the best game in town. I would not buy the upcoming Fuji Finepix SLR regardless of the image quality because it is built on a very low end consumer level SLR 35mm camera body.

Customer Service

Nikon Professional Services has traditionally been great, but my D1 has needed no service yet.
