Strength:
Ergonomics. Ease of use. Nikon optics
Weakness:
Cant use non dx flashes for TTL. Only a weakness if you have older flashes are arent willing to buy a new one. This camera, works straight out of the box. Controls are very familiar to users of Nikon cameras and I think there is a small advantage if one has used a coolpix before. Great focusing especially in low light. Image quality very nice. You do need the DX flashes otherwise you miss out on TTL but can still use auto. camera feels rugged. Customer Service Not needed and hopefully never. Strength:
Easy to use, ergonomics are great for my hands, 6.1 MP , interchangable Nikon Lens's.
Weakness:
This is where the camera falls apart. It has all the features to take good photos but simply doen not. My unit is now off to Nokon for a check-up at only 3 months old. The photos are just not up to par with even the better point and shoot cameras from Nikon or Fuji. This camera is well behind the Canon D-60 ot Fuji S2 in photo quality. Maybe the D stands for DOG I like the feel of this camera. I own other Nikons so I had lens's to spare. Customer Service I will soon know. First contact has been very good. If my camera is returned in a condition to produce quality photos I will be happy with all aspects of Nikon. Presently, I am disappointed. Similar Products Used: Nikon F models and Nikonos. Nikon 4300 Point and Shoot 3mp which outperforms the D100 2 to one in photo quality. |

Strength:
lightweight, easy controls (once set in custom settings) Easy transition from Film to digital with existing equipment. Bright viewer
Weakness:
dont trust the LCD for sharpness or final results cumbersome rubber door for usb, although I am afraid how long it will take for it to come off. doesnt have a sync I'm surprised at the low reviews of this camera since using photographyreviews to convince me to purchase this. It has been a direction of photography that I have been waiting for and overall afford. Because I have been waiting for a SLR digital, and Nikon has always been a solid product, I picked up this camera in September of 2002 for a wedding. My first impression was the weight and the ability to comfortably grip the camera. Since I had an arsenal of lens from my F100 body, I started shooting away not knowing the many accessories I needed to "complete the package". Yes I forgot the compact flash, and eventually began the quest to purchase more and more "digital" appetite. I emerged myself in the little pocket book manual for two days, and shot my friends wedding from am to midnight. I was pleasantly surprised of the option for the grid viewfinder. After the first hours of shooting, I brought along my Apple Powerbook and viewed my first 100 RAW files, and loved the results. I wasn't used to viewing my shots with the LCD, because of my sight, so I just turned it off. I placed a SB-50DX flash on, and shot off a test indoor and my fear came over me because it was underexposed. I spent about 15min, to find that I was supposed to turn off the matrix, and from then it was no problems. I wished I was able to use my SB80, but it wasn't DX rated, but have switched to a more complicated lighting system since. There were a few times during my shoot where writing times to the compact flash were a problem, especially when you shoot off more than 4 and above in rapid session. I should of bought a IBM microdrive. Otherwise the focusing was pretty accurate, and the ability to change ISO during late afternoons to eventually using the higher 1600 ISO was a pleasure to make pitch black receptions on the patio, visible. To this day I havent been disapointed ever, and hope to continue using this as my workhorse. P.S. I have since upgraded the firmware with my D100 and updated the software capture and nikon viewer for my Apple OS X and now I feel absolutely confident when I do my shoots. Strength:
Compatibility with all Nikon products and the native file (*.NEF). The sharpness of picture, I never saw this result with negative (Coolscan include).
Weakness:
The synch flash is don't locked like the F4 or F5. Is very a good DSLR, when you work with the RAM (*.NEF) files, you've a wonderfull picture. After you use this kind camera, you'll never come back with negative 35mm. Customer Service Nikon products have the one best service. Similar Products Used: Coolpix 990 |

Strength:
Intuitive controls. Logical menu system. Extremely customisable for personal preferences. Nikon lenses! Fast writing of JPEGs. Fantastically comfortable to use with MB-D100 grip. Fantastic pictures.
Weakness:
USB2 would be nice or firewire. Second bay for another microdrive would be cool. Steep learning curve - but worth it in the end! I am delighted with this camera. I thought long and hard about whether or not to spend the extra and get the D1x, but in the end my decision was based on the following: a) I don't need a camera to be built like a tank to do the kind of work I do. b) The resolution is higher on the D100 than the D1x. c) Was the D1x really worth the huge difference in price? In the end I decided not. The D100 does as others have observed have a steep learning curve to get the best out of it. I however gave the camera time and now I see that the bods at Nikon have really thought this one through. And the results speak for themselves. The images are phenomenal. Focussing is fast and accurate. Exposure and metering are up to Nikon's usual standards of excellence. The snobs out there who moan that this is not a true professional camera are quite simply wrong. Or maybe they are D1 owners who have seen the results from the D100 and hate to admit to themselves that actually it is a fantastic all round digital SLR? The bottom line is that my images are being published with this camera - and isn't that what really counts in the end? Customer Service Haven't needed it |

Strength:
Image quality(printing 8x10's off 30% of the image). Compatible with all my exsisting lenses. Unbelievable battery life. Vertical grip. Instant feedback. Fun to shoot.(not to heavy)
Weakness:
Cover for connectors. Card door. Not able to do firmware updates in field. Software. A photo editor should be included. Can not clean with out additional accessory. I wanted to wait before reviewing this camera. I have over 3000 images shot with this camera. I'm was very reluctant to give up film. I am now shooting the D100 almost exclusivly. I have to say it is wonderful to have instant feedback of the images. I really like the battery life. I shoot college football games and watch the other shooters go through two and three batteries, I'm still on my first. The under-exposure problem is inherent to high contrast shooting with matrix metering. I always had +.3 to +1 ev with all my Nikons in high contrast.(At least you can see it.) Carry a loop for critical focus checks on the screen. If this camera is too soft for your taste check your lens quality. I have several 16x20's and one 20x24 from this camera that just sing. Take your time getting to know this camera before you make a rash judgement. Customer Service Great on the phone. Am sending it in for the latest firmware.
