Strength:

Takes great pictures.
Looks nice.

Weakness:

Poor build quality, cheap weak internal parts until you need to replace them then they become expensive weak internal parts.

The infra red remote is a poor design as it only works when you have a line of sight from you to the front of the camera which means you always have to be forward of the camera.

Nikon service was terrible, with them thinking that 1 year and 20 days is reasonable, maybe I expect too much !

This is my first ever DSLR and at first I was blown over by it. For the first year I loved this camera, stunning pictures, easy to use and a solid feel to it. Sadly it turned out to not be quite as solid as it looked.
One year and 20 days and the mirror has developed a problem where it is stuck in the open position. Nikon will not do anything as the warranty has expired so I have put it in for repair. The shop is telling me that the main circuit board has 'blown' and has taken the flash circuit board with it. To replace them both is about the same price as a new body so basically its worthless.
Considering the D40X was a new model just over a year ago and has now been replaced by the D60 I feel I have just paid a lot of money to be a beta tester for Nikon.
If you think that a camera that lasts for just one year is reasonable then go ahead and buy this one because other than the weak build quality it's a great piece of equipment.

Strength:

10.2 megapixel, fast autofocus, JPG or RAW formats, uses the inexpensive and high capacity SD cards (up to 32GB now using SDHC), plenty of features, ease of use in automatic or manual, longggggggggg battery life, pretty sturdy and doesn't have the toy feel of the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi (its competitor)

Weakness:

not great in low light situations, expensive, doesn't have built in autofocus motor in camera so you can only use Nikon AF-S lenses (which are expensive as well) unless you want fully manual lenses.

This is a good all around camera with plenty of features to keep beginners and experienced amateurs entertained and content. It shoots great in RAW format where the pictures can be blown up huge. Has 10.2 effective megapixels. This is an awesome entry level dSLR camera that anyone can use.

Strength:

well built, ergonomic, ease of use, crisp image,

Weakness:

3 point focus area.
only AF-S and AS-I lens (but there are a lot out there)

This is a great DSLR, it isn't a pro camera but that doesn't mean pros can't use it. Once i move beyond the realm of beginners, I plan on grabbing a higher end Nikon. This doesn't mean I'll be getting rid of my D40x though. This thing is great for going on rough hikes, taking on the plane, or just transporting in general.

With the guts of the D80 it really performs and now with the D60 coming out the price tag got a bit better.

Strength:

Size, ergonomics, price, photo qualities

Weakness:

Too much reliance on manipulation of menues. No cover over LCD screen.

I have owned nearly every incarnation of Nikon Pro and semi-pro camera since I purchased my first rangefinder in 1959. I was a professional with a studio but am retired now. I still do casual photography as well as product shoots, so I try to keep up with what is going on. I presently own a D300, a D80 and a D40x. I picked up the D40x because I wanted something small that I could grab when I did not want to be burdened down with one of the "Big Boys", lenses, strobes etc. I keep it handy, in a bag with 2 lens and a bunch of memory cards.

If you want a complete and thorough review, please read the one posted by the pros on this site. They were 100 percent correct, in all their observations. I was most pleased by the thoroughness and thoughtfulness of the review.

Please remember that this is not a "Pro" camera and is not intended to take the place of the D3 or D300, or even the D80, but it is a d*** fine camera. Photos are excellent, and if one is careful, under most circumstances, you can duplicate the same type of photo you get with higher priced cameras. You can't go wrong with this little gem.

Strength:

weight and dimentions, very quick responce and quick start.
good software (body and when using connecting to PC)

Weakness:

quality build.

Bought with 18-135mm
Switch from the Canon XTI
Look more cheep than Canon Build quality is on 3.
Like compact and lightweight. Good with 18-135 like all-around camera with acsepable image quality.
Bad think - is quality buld - from the begin had a problem - body lens contact slightly damadged by kit lens - often see a messadge: lens not attached when turn on the camera. Send to service - all they did just clean the contact - in my opinion the camera contact group need to be replaced. As expected, I see this mesadge again and again. SO, service is not proffesional at all! (I use east coast US service).
If not that - I like this camera.

Strength:

Quite satisfacory.

Weakness:

Yet not detected.

I have been using Nikon F65 and recently jumping from Fuji S9600, I have purchased Nikon D40x which is a pretty good camera. Picture quality is excellent, detailing sharp even on above 300% cropping. Noise is very minimum. The camera works good in manual mode with my earlier bought Nikon 80-200 mm AF-D telephoto zoom lens. No problem has yet been faced. Battery service is also very stunning. As a beginner from film SLR to DSLR, I have been really learning a lot with this camera without the fear of film misuse. Recommened for all those who has a desire for DSLR.

Strength:

Small, light simple to use, GREAT imges from a very good sensor. Color contrast way above average with no noise till you get beyond 800iso and then it's minimal

Weakness:

knowing exactly what I bought I feel there are no weaknesses. As far as the lens picture goes this is not a problem.

Used as a backup for my D200. the D40x is one of the best DSLR's I have ever used. It is given to a slight overexposure which is not a problem. Like any other piece of equipment you must learn how to get the best from it

Customer Service

None required but in the past Nikon has been excellent. I have been using Nikon's since 1960

Strength:

- weight
- compacity
- settings panel
- 10.2 megapixels
- iTTL flashes system

Weakness:

- solid plastic construction (not for hard conditions)
- afs & afi lenses only
- 3 autofocus points

This dslr is pretty simple and compact and these are probably its main qualities... I usually use it with my AF-S 18-70 mm lens and it's a very nice couple ! It gives me sharp and crisp pictures when they're well focused. The autofocus is quick, viewfinder regular... Menu is well presented, even easier for those that have already owned Nikon DSLRs and will help beginners a lot ! The 10.2 megapixels will be an advantage if you like cropping ! Could be a killer apparel if only it had more autofocus points (not really a drawback...), wider viewfinder, accepted the whole nikon lenses family...
