Strength:

Build quality Lens performance Needle pointer to show F stop Manual operations which require no battery power

Weakness:

Lenses are not available other than that none

Bought the camera new in 1982. Used regularly, just replaced the battery once in 20 years. No problems in 20 years. The only SLR camera I will ever own before I go digital. I have not able to master the Depth of Field facility

Strength:

The durability of this camera can withstand many obsticals and other terrains.

Weakness:

this product is extreamely heavy and with the new cameras out there this things wight is two to three times as heavy but with that heavyness come stability and touchness.

This camera I have been using for years and will most likely keep on using for years to come. this camera, you can many things with it and the quality is extraordinary.

Strength:

All manual settings. Manual Focus. Heavy Duty! Aperture Priority. (optional) Quiet with the cloth shutter. Depth of Field Preview. Self Timer & Self Timer Cancel.

Weakness:

Aperture Priority throws a fit when it's not on, to remind you to use it. (blinking light) It's a minor annoyance, I really wouldn't consider it a weakness.

I bought this camera used, from a professional. It's in mint shape, no "squick". I've been nothing but pleased with it since I pulled it out of the box of styrofoam peanuts! It came along with 2 lenses, a Soligar 23mm wide angle & a Sigma 80-210mm. I ran test film through it the first day, recorded my exposures and used high contrast colour situations. The Auto Aperture is a bit to get used to, but it's nice if you want to speed up your picture taking experience by a few seconds. All in all, I've been thrilled with this purchase and it is my official back-up gear. I do make a point drag it out and use it more often than back-up gear is normally used. It's the 23mm wide that gets me to use this camera more often...

Strength:

Incredible durability, sharp photos,....great lenses...simplicity in it's finest form(my wife wishes I spoke about her the way I do about my ae1)

Weakness:

can't find one

The Canon AE1 has been incredible...I recently purchased a new Nikon 35mm SLR and I find myself digging in my bag for ole reliable...my dad had given me this AE1 when I was about twelve years old because he had purchased the ae1 program...I can't say enough good things about this incredible camera....

Professional

Strength:

Mechanical construction, reliable metering, DOF preview

Weakness:

No mirror lock-up Screens not interchangable

The AE-1 is a solid workhorse of a camera. I have used mine for nearly 10 years as my primary body and, after switching to an EOS-1 system about 4 years ago, have since used it as a backup camera. The built in meter is accurate and the camera does come equiped with a depth of field preview switch, which is critical for me since I use the body mostly as a dedicated macro rig these days. Excepting a couple of cases where the battery has run down excessively (my error-- not the camera's) the AE-1 has been an utterly reliable companion on field excursions. Expect to have foam around focusing screen replaced every several years (Generally included in a CLA servicing: clean, lube, adjust).

Strength:

very strong excellent pictures the best camera ever.

Weakness:

not found any yet.

I bought this camera from a friend of mine, and i got the AE1 with the 55mm lense and a telephoto lenze (75-205mm) and a wide angle lense for 250. This is a awesome camera and the pictures that it takes are beautiful. My friend also gave me the powerwinder that was for the AE1 and with that the camera becomes a little more heavy but very steady and fun to use. this is the best camera i have every used my dad is a professional photographer and he has a AE1, Yashica, Pentax, Nikon, Hasselbald and a Mamiya. and i love the AE1 always and finally i managed to get one for myself too.

Customer Service

sent it for a normal service after i got it from my friend and got the camera cleaned asa he had not used it for 5 years. Besides that never had a problem.

Strength:

Durability Easy of use resale value

Weakness:

Weight some accesories can be hard to find

My grandfather purchased this camera new somewhere around 1980 but ended up giving it to my father beacause it was too complicated for him. (Ha, Ha) My father used exccessevily for about 5 years and then completly stoped using it for another 5 years. He gave it to me and I learned the control in about a week! I haven't had a bad picture yet with the shutter priority ae and the focus is always sharper than those point and shoots. Very easy to use, and almost nothing will break it! It must still be in demand, they're selling on ebay for about $150!

Strength:

Simplicity, durability, reliability, and it just feels good in my hand.

Weakness:

The battery compartment is a little funky and hard to get to.

I received my AE-1 Program as a gift about 25 years ago. Not once...I repeat...Not once has it failed to perform for me. It's nicked and scarred and no longer as pretty as it once was, but it is like an old wife who has stuck with you through thick and thin as you grow older together.

Customer Service

Never once!
