Canon EF 35mm SLRs

Canon EF 35mm SLRs

DESCRIPTION

Out-of-production manual focus SLR, ca. 1973.
This camera's main feature was the first and last of its kind. It was the Copal Square, a vertical-travel, metal-curtain, focal-plane shutter. The camera's specifications and ease of use were ideal for aged users. Just press the shutter button for shutter speed-priority TTL automatic exposure.

Strength:

Very - very high quality build. Smooth precise operation. Currently out of favor so very cheap. Full featured esp. when considering the camera was introduced in 1972. Shutter still operates even when batteries go 1/1000 - 1 sec). Very accurate shutter (confirmed by my tech). Very complete viewfinder information. Exposure lock, mirror lock up, and double exposure capabilities. Electronically timed exposures from 1-30 seconds.

Weakness:

Uses mercury batteries. A bit big but I like the size. Super expensive to fix (but does not usually happen) so if it goes toss body (or use as a manual camera) and buy another for about $120. If you buy be sure to time the long shutter speeds - this is a good indication of whether the camera needs work. Not much demand so if you buy you should plan to keep.

Exellent classic camera. Like it better than any of the A series. Intuitive to operate and easy to use. Very rugged but you better hope it doesn't break.

Customer Service

Cannon does not actively support the FD line so I cannot rate. However service has been good for my EOS line.

Strength:

This is probably the best camera to learn photography on. It is a tank...very sturdy. It has a flash sync of 125th, which is great. Easy to use. Great camera.

Weakness:

No auto focus, no ABE, no advanced features. But for what the camera is, it is great.

If you want a good sturdy beginning camera, or just don't like all the stuff on the EOS cameras, this is a great camera.

Customer Service

Never needed it, great camera.

Strength:

Solid, "Brass & glass" construction: Excellent, quick reacting meter: informative viewfinder:shutter priority AE. Copal square shutter w/125th flash sync speed. Great "feel" and it has the sound of a well made precision mechanical camera.

Weakness:

It's heavy, and obsolete. You can only get parts from another EF. Takes two PX-625 mercury cells, and it needs them since replacements do not last that long.

I bought this camera as much for it's looks as how it operates. In the collecting trade the EF is known as the Black Beauty, and that it is. It is the only other Canon F camera that is built on the F-1 chassis. However, like all 20+ year old cameras, I use it sparingly since it is increasingly becoming one of a kind. Still, if I want to take just one camera with me, this is it.

Customer Service

Haven't needed it yet, though it should have a clean, lube and adjust job

'another brick in the wall'

Weakness:

no exposure compensation- do it with the iso-dial!!

This manual focus slr is my second body that i use mostla for macro and portraits. it's a burner well equipped and rock solid- run a truck over it and it still works

Customer Service

Strength:

brass and glass, as one review stated, copal square shutter, great meter, awesome feel....best of all a no b.s. camera with great results. no plastic lens barrell here! The last of the Swiss Watch type of camera. The successor was the AE-1, which was plastic, plastic and electronics. it worked but it's like a rolex compared to a casio digital watch. no one is going to be discussing and / or trading 25+ year old casios, and the same applies to AE-1.

Weakness:

none. maybe no auto focus for when you feel lazy

never ever sell it. there is no market, but it is still a great camera, and was way ahead of it's time

Customer Service

in 1978, i dented the prism while hiking, Monty's sent it to canon. they sent out to japan, 5 months later, i got it back with as they stated, the last "new original top" in the world. took a while, was not cheap, but they got it done!

by the way, if you are in whittier CA, go to monty's , ask for Kim. I wonder if he is still there? (family business). It was a great old style (service) store.
