Canon EOS 1 35mm SLRs

Canon EOS 1 35mm SLRs

DESCRIPTION

The (former) top-of-the-line EOS camera. The AF sensor is four times more sensitive than the BASIS sensor used in the EOS 650, the first EOS camera. It can autofocus even in EV -1. Also, the EOS-1's cross-type BASIS sensor was developed to enable focusing of horizontally-lined subjects. This AF sensor and the predictive AI Servo AF mode are outstanding. The camera also has a variety of metering modes: 5.8% partial metering with an 8mm-diameter circle at the center, 2.3% fine spot metering, centerweighted averaging metering with 6 zones, and 6-zone evaluative metering. High precision, high reliability, and durability characterized this camera.

Strength:

The Original Pro AF SLR that set the standards for every Pro Camera to come. And despite what is stated by an earlier review, the EOS 1 is built of the exact same materials as the EOS 1n They are BOTH Polycarbonate/Aluminum Hybrids. And yes they are BOTH built like tanks

Weakness:

By todays standards it has too small of a focusing area and it's rewind is loud.

The original ruler of the roost and still a superb camera!!!

Strength:

Rugged; solid-feel; straight forward, no frills; pro-equipment quality at now reasonably cheap prices.

Weakness:

Relatively loud compared to EOS5; can feel increasingly heavy as the trek goes further.

Now out-of-production, the EOS1 is easily obtainable at reasonable prices. Good all round solidness. If you don't need the wizz of the newer equipment, go for something that's tried and tested... and still clicking.

Customer Service

Never had to call them, except to get a new manual.

Strength:

Built like a tank...Out of metal unlike the EOS-1N

Weakness:

Heavy

Unlike the EOS-1N, the original EOS-1 is made of anodized metal. It is heavy, but the most rugged body on the market. It's out of production but can be had used for $500. You won't need the extra features of the 1N anyway. But get the booster or battery pack for fast AF.

Strength:

very solid build, good water resistance when rubber button cover on it.
It's simplicity. Diopter adjustment.

Weakness:

sometimes wish it had more than one focus point when using servo focus for sports shooting and i don't want the focus point in the middle of the frame (has obviously been adressed on newer models). no top dial on E-1 booster like the E-2 has, so harder to adjust aperture in vertical grip when using Aperture priority.

It's beauty is it's simplicity. The newer, higher featured models I used did little to improve my technique, and I needed the added weather resistance. I have two eos-1's, one in mint condition ad one that has had very heavy use. never had any real problems with either.

Customer Service

very good. Had the power switch on one of mine replaced, as the detents wore out.

Strength:

strong, solid, easy to use, after years still a very fast autofocus system, great variety of excellent lenses available

Weakness:

heavy with the booster motor, loud rewind

I own this camera for eight years now, using it for every type of photography: holiday, journalism, sports, people, indoor, outdoor, almost everything. I like very much it because of the strenghts mentioned above. Moreover, it is very resistant to water as well as to hot and cold outside temperature.
I always use the EOS 1 without the booster motor because of the heavy weight the system would otherwise have. Three pictures per second are enough for my needs.
Never thought of buying a new camera up to now, although the EOS 1 does not provide me with the latest features of modern cameras.

Strength:

Rugged reliable still works today has been through war and countless deadly assignments

Weakness:

Needs a button cover on top other than that nothing as far as compaired to when it came out in 89 when it was a production model. Some "improvements" on 1n were not improvments at all in my opinion.

One tough mother of a workhorse! I have been to war and covered riots and military actions through out the world. I have been shot at hit by rocks in Israel dived out of the way of tracked vehicles and have lost some of my hearing from a rocket that landed near me all with eos 1 bodies in hand. Some dips in Iraq surrendered to me as I traveled through a bombed out bunker looking for some messed up soldiers to take photos of. I held my white 300mm like a gun and marched them back to some MP's. I know now why they call it "Canon"! Other than my cameras, I was unarmed! I saw a lot of guys with Nikon and Pentax equipment that fell apart on them. I could have been a Canon Rep. at the time because I conviced several press guys out there from just about every country that sent someone to cover the shield/storm war into dumping their unreliable junk. I spent several days hanging around the "campfires" left over from Iraqs' army that filled the air with so much smoke that was so dence that at times you couldn't see the sun in what should have been a sunny day. I still have trouble breathing from my time there but my eos 1 bodies managed to keep working with nothing more than a standard cleaning that is not unlike the regular cleaning everyone else does. Unfornatually I own one body that I keep as a paperweight on my desk. That one has a bullet hole through it and doesn't work anymore. This is common with all cameras that are struck by bullets. My first 300mm usm 2.8 saved me from serious injury by shielding my face while I was lying down shooting skirmishes in Lebanon from rocket schrappnel but was so badly dammaged that I had to get a new one. This is also common with lenses that become face shields from rocket blasts 10 feet away. I keep this lens above my fireplace today. Nikon learned a lesson as they saw more and more of their guys switching to Canon that they came out with the F5 body. I'd say it is at least as tough as any Canon these days but not nearly as reliable which is why I own two equal systems of both Canon and Nikon. I own the latest camera equipment but for some reason, I enjoy packing my well used eos 1 bodies whenever I'm called to a situation. My eos bodies of which I still use 1 on regularly has served me well for over ten years. Their lenses are not bad either. I like to use them more than the Nikons and I like their optics slightly better. I have had to replace several over the years but I am in situations that are more demanding than the worst situations field-sports photographers will ever face. 10 STARS!!

Customer Service

nothing more than a cleanning every so often by a friend in town. Shutter will eventually be replaced considering I have well over 9,000 rolls of film that I logged through the body that I've used most often over the years but it hasen't broken down yet. Canon CPS is great for everything that can be fixed.....read on!

Strength:

Rugged, solid feel full metal cap, front and bottom plate, not a plastic cap like the 1n, very reliable, easy to use, great lenses

Weakness:

Compared to the R8, I have to look at the display too much, the metering and the program mode should be displayed in the viefinder as it is the case with Leica

The EOS-1 is a very solid and reliable companion. I bought it at ebay in a mint condition and payed a reasonable price. This one is much better an will last much longer compared to all those plastic bombers like the Elan, A2, Rebel,... At the same time I'm an enthusiastic Leica user, so the full metal body was just right ! I needed service only once (routine checkup) to check the shutter and the shutter control, that was a bit out of specs. The metering precision is very accurate and the pics are great. I mostly shoot Provia 100F and Velvia, so I mostly use center weighted evaluative and spot metering. I only use the 6-zone metering for print films or when you can't think, just shoot. And 6-zones are absolutely enough. You won't get better results by using 21+ zones. The camera won't think better for you. I also bought the PB-E1 Booster, which is quite useful if you need a vertical grip. It is heavy, but well balanced with heavier telephoto lenses and high speed zooms. I also had the battery pack BP-E1, but I sold this one. No vertical grip and also quite heavy. All in all, I can say, that the EOS-1 is a very tough camera and a very reliable one, too. The EOS-1N's top cover is made of cheaper plastic an is much more vulnerable. It has enough features to take excellent pictures and the user interface is very intuitive. You don't have to read the manual, except for the custom functions. The camera is obtainable at reasonable prices, but should be checked at a service point after right after buying it. When it's OK, you don't need any servicing for many years to come. It's much better to by such a used pro cam than to waste your money on new cheap plastic stuff.

Strength:

Excellent build quality, very simple to operate, reliable, easy to obtain at very reasonable prices.

Weakness:

As has been said, can be somewhat heavy with PB-E1 and large aperture telephotos and zooms. However, this is to be expected. Loud.

Tough, reliable workhorse. If one wants a camera that can handle any enviroment and still give great performance, then look no further. It may not have all the technical wizardry of the latest Pro models but, it can certainly hold it's own in any shooting situation that one might find themselves in. Great camera.
