Strength:

- Not left wanting for features - Accurate & dependable - Solid construction - Intelligent user interface - Good autofocus - No fancy frills such as eye control or popup flash

Weakness:

- Very large, bulky & heavy - Bigger than a Hasselblad when high-speed pack is installed! - Loud shutter & film advance - Confusing dedicated flash systems (Nikon is no better)

This camera appears to be the pinnacle of 35mm SLR camera development, and is packed with real-world practical features. I can't think of a better 35mm SLR that covers all bases. Excellent value if purchased second hand.

Strength:

This is a camera which "feels right", despite the weight the ergonomics are spot on. It is a joy to use and has reinvigorated my photographic hobby. The "L" series lenses are fantastic particularly the 24-70 F2.8 and the 70-200 F2.8 IS .

Weakness:

The ONLY little thing that I can pick up on is that with the 550EX flashgun in use, the autofocus seems to be slightly sluggish. Any one else found this problem?

After 23 years of the Olympus OM system, from the OM10 to the OM2 Spot Program, I finally made a radical change to Canon EOS system. A friend showed me some wonderful shots taken with his Canon EOS3, superbly sharp and ALL correctly exposed. That did it for me, I started saving my pennies and in January 2003, I popped down to my preferred camera dealer and splashed out on the EOS1v plus lenses. The Olympus system was O.K. I suppose, but a lack of reliability plus other minus factors meant that I was never REALLY satisfied with the results. The Canon EOS1V has turned out to be a complete revelation with AT LAST correctly exposed and really sharp photos and at last, that satisfied feeling of pictures well taken. The Autofocus and the metering are exceptional and build absolutely bombproof. I bought a mint second hand EOS1V from a work friend as a second body for a bargain price recently.

Strength:

Design Speed Flexibility Access to L lenses, USM and IS My backup Elan 7E works fine

Weakness:

Reliability ? How come that such a pro camera has got this kind of problem ? I read issues about the finish of Nikon but despite an outdated viewfinder and less ergonomy my F5's never let me down.

I came from the Nikon World (F100 and F5) and decided to change mainly for the L lenses. I bought the EOS 1V HS which really fits my needs. You can remove the booster which is useful if you need to travel light. Unfortenately, I got a problem one month after the purchase : the contact pin on the far left is sometimes stuck in the pushed position and therefore there is no AF, dof test and the camera refuses to take a picture (better). This happened 2 days after the purchase and the only solution is to remove the lens, push the pin so it comes back into place. When I cover a wedding or something it's not easy to explain why I do this instead of taking pictures. Moreover the rubber on the booster is get away.

Customer Service

Very disappointing. After sending the camera to get this issue fixed I got it back exactly with the same problems. Nothing had been done !!! Now my 1V is back there again for the second time after 1 month. I can't believe it.

Strength:

Very good metering system. solid feel in terms of its construction. 100% view finder

Weakness:

need to be careful when using 45-multi focus points as it tend to focus nearest object infront of the subject which confuses u if your subjects been focused or not. so, i lock my subject with half-way shutter button pushed and recompose the subject before the shot is taken.

got this camera EOS 1v-HS after using Elan 7 which is good to start with as a beginner. The solid feel of the construction, tons of features, weather-resistant let me choose this camera. I bought this with PB_E2 because u can use AA-alkaline batteries which can be found world-wide and i would have no problem taking it to my Himalayan country. Absolutley, didn't find any difficulties to set up right after opening the box. Prior experience with OTHER EOS camera's helped me to operate this camera. Shot couple rolls of films with my limited lenses and results are far better so to speak than my Elan 7. It must be its metering system. By far, it would be my last but best 35mm slr that i would retain and i am heading towards DSLR with good similar solidity. I might be patience in terms of price to fall before i get one . May be next year. Highly recommendable 35mm slr.

Strength:

Best metering system I ever used (see camera list below)! 10 fps or a more compact Camera without Booster. Very tough and extremely well sealed. Great custom and personal functions.

Weakness:

Some AF problems in very (very) low light. It's a pitty that AF pointgroups used are only shown in one-shot mode. Software not included and very expensive. Not so good sealing between Booster and Camera.

I bougt this camera as a test for the 1 D. This is probably my last Film-SLR - and the best! AF, metering, build quality and the LENSES are just great.

Strength:

The camera's ability to record shooting information is its most valuable feature (and that's saying alot). The data, downloadable with optional software, is incredibly detailed and is a great tool to use in reviewing your photos, learning your mistakes and successes, and growing as a photographer.

Weakness:

None. Don't complain about the weight; you all knew how much it weighed when you bought it. To the last reviewer: the camera can make up to 9 exposures on one frame. Read your instruction manual.

I purchased EOS 1V-HS about six months ago. It is the best camera money can buy. The look and feel are second-to-none. The controls are advanced but easy to learn with practice. It is incredibly fast and durable. If you have the resources, I highly recommend it.

Strength:

Speed, meter accuracy, reliability, quality, ergonomics, flexibility, product design. A true flagship to the line.

Weakness:

After using D-SLRs, I miss rear LCD and QCD as opposed to EOS 1V's CFs. Lack of built in flash. Some of the EOS line needs to be expanded. Otherwise, nearly perfect.

Its difficult to imagine a better camera for the money. The weight could always be reduced, and yet, as others mentioned, this characteristic belies the camera's quality in construction, reliability and functioning. I like the analog scale to the right in the viewfinder that originated with the manual focus T90. I use spot-meter readings and this scale to make many of my exposure determinations. The meter is otherwise very accurate, focusing is exceptionally quick (with L series glass anyway), and tracking isadaquete in servo mode, with the 45 point zone. Screens are interchangeable and with the NiMH battery pack, 10fps is there when you need it. Although I'm a pro, I do miss the built in flash on occasion (although the 550EX plus some 420EXs as strobes work very well). The Quick Command Dial is useful, but after using Canon's digital SLRs, I almost wish I could input changes via a rear LCD and QCD rather than CFs. Maybe the next EOS 1 line film camera will have this feature borrowed from the 1D or 10D and a built in flash as well. I went from a T90 to an EOS 1, so the push buttons to change functions came as second nature, but I do believe the learning curve is a little higher on this camera than say an F5. Also, When you know it, this system and the ergonomics work very well! With the backlit LCD and/or the viewfinder, you can actually get used to making changes in darkness, because the buttons are arranged to be differentiated easily like a type of brail. All you have to do is remember the different functions and combinations. Spot metering and FEL are accurate nearly 97% the time, and two of my favorite features.

Customer Service

A 300TL was quicly repaired. I havn't had a failure since then. A D30 flash synchro problem was fine-tuned. Very good service!
