Strength:

Solid metal lens mount, mid-roll rewind. Has 7 no-risk, no-problem preset modes. Great for the first-time SLR user. Easy to operate/grows with the owners ability.

Weakness:

Heavier than the newer models. For some this may be a draw back by the time you add on a lens.

I'd recomend the purchase of either one of these. I'd go with the 630 over the 650, only because of the 5fps and mid-roll rewind and preset programs. Canon has stopped producing these but some are still around on some internet autions, for sales areas, etc.

Customer Service

Haven't had the need to seek them out. Cleaned to specs by a local camera shop.

I also have and use the 650/ before the purchase of the 630. Fits small hands well. I still carry and use a Ricoh KR-5

Model Reviewed: EOS 630

Strength:

The EOS 630 has an excellent build quality, which is second to the EOS-1, IN, and IV.

It is packed with useful features like an LCD has a nice blue backlight for night photography (which appears only in EOS 620, 1, 1N, 3 and IV), 7 custom functions, a 5 fps motorspeed, depth of field preview, a tighter partial meter (6.5%) etc…

To use the remote switch 60 T3, one has to change another grip (GR20).

It’s AF speed is reasonably fast and it depends on what one is focusing at. Using a cross-split focusing screen could compensate its lack of a cross AF sensor.

Weakness:

It is also quite noisy as compared to the newer EOS line-ups especially during rewinding (much like the EOS 1).

It also lacks an important mirror lock-up feature (similar to EOS 1).

The rubberised grip is not too comfortable to hold and the rubber will peel after a few years of use.

It is a great camera and it delivers good value for the price that one pays for a used unit. Ideal as a backup camera especially if you are using the EOS 1.

Customer Service

Canon Singapore has also given me excellent service. I had to send the EOS 630 for servicing once as the shutter curtain shock had absorber had melted and left a black greasy stain on the shutter curtain.

Strength:

solid feel, 5fps great for sports & wildlife, great used camera for backup

Weakness:

manual mode a pain, body little short-needs grip for longer zooms, buttons under panel tricky to push

If you have the EOS system and need a very reliable second body, the 630 will perform with greater expectation than previous EOS's.

Customer Service

Sent zoom bought that was just out of warranty because of speck of dirt in optics, and Canon cleaned lens and returned at no charge!

Strength:

Tough camera, reliable autofocus, fast 5 frames per second motor drive built in, light, very proficient metering system with full screen evaluative, center weighted and spot metering modes. Good camera to grow with. Enough custom functions to tailor camera more or less to your shooting style.

Weakness:

As ugly as a Sherman tank, (but almost as tough). Manual exposure is an aggravating experience. Exposure compensation is a little clunky.

This is the very first camera I bought. I compared the Minolta Maxxum, the eos, and the nikon "n" series against each other since I had no previous system to constrain my choices. The minolta seemed gimmicky, the controls were clumsy, definitely more an expensive point and shoot than a serious camera to learn photography with, although the AF seemed very competent. The nikon system was over priced, the controls were somewhat less than intuitive and the autofocus was less than sure and slow. The eos 630 on the other hand, was more intuitive to use, the quick control dial made perfect sense as the main control in shifting programmed exposure. The AF was almost without fault, and the toughness of the camera (as I found later through experience) was nothing short of amazing. I've dropped this camera on pavement, had it crunched against a rock wall when a mule I was riding in Yosemite decided to body slam me into a rock wall, shot pictures in light rain...basically I taken this camera through almost everything except a live battlefield. I ditched this camera for an A2 after 5 years, but now regret it. The A2 is not nearly as reliable as this camera was for me.

Customer Service

never had the pleasure to find out.

Strength:

Ease of use, well built,
excellent system backup and accessories. Good range of built in functions and standard features. Reliable. AF brilliant, lens motors always been faster and now USM. Ahead of its time, 11 years young and can still see off some of the new-comers.

Weakness:

A little heavy and large.
Poor hand grip, not a patch on the EOS 850's.
60T3 remote release an expensive option, not long enough, and has to use a different grip.

An excellent all rounder, a very good buy used.
Could do a lot worse.
I would not change.

Customer Service

Never had to use it

Strength:

This camera is bullet-proof. It has been through rain, sleet and snow and has worked like a charm.

Weakness:

The manual mode is quite cumbersome; takes some getting used to.

Overall the EOS 630 is a terrific unit and now I'm teaching my children (ages 7 and 5) the wonderful world of photography with this camera.

Customer Service

Since I purchased the camera in 89', I never had to call the customer service line.

Strength:

built like a tank
nice size for my big hands
5 fps motor drive

Weakness:

using on manual is a challenge

excellent camera.
I have heard that unlike almost all other slr's, this camera does not consume battery power during a long "b" exposure. I would like to do star trail photography and I don't want to drain a battery for each several-hours long exposure. Apparantly the Eos 3 has this non-battery consuming "b" mode, and if anyone can set me straight on this I would appreciate it.

Strength:

Absolutely bulletproof camera. I've taken it backpacking around the world in weather conditions ranging from icy to desert for nearly ten years and its never even looked like having problems. Excellent metering (but perhaps I've subconsciously adjusted to any weaknesses it might have!).

Weakness:

Rubber grip comes loose with time, relatively heavy compared with newer light-weight models, a little more "angular" than other EOS cameras.

I bought the camera new, hence the $400 price tag. If you see one on the second hand market, snap it up. I bought an EOS 50E/Elan IIe but still I prefer my 630. Trouble is the only new model which feels as robust to me is an EOS 1...

Customer Service

Never needed it - can't say more than that
