Canon EOS 650 35mm SLRs

Canon EOS 650 35mm SLRs

DESCRIPTION

Canon's first EOS camera had the latest technologies including a super microcomputer and a Canon-developed BASIS sensor for high-precision AF. The EOS 650 boasted incomparable autofocusing. Each EF lens has its own optimum built-in motor for autofocusing, and only electronic signals are exchanged between the lens and camera body. It is an ideal AF system.

Strength:

Extremely well-built and solid camera. Controls are simple to use. Good metering, with a 6.5% partial metering area, compared to 8.5 - 9.5% for more recent EOS models.

Weakness:

Manual metering is a little clumsy and time-consuming.

This camera is so much more durable than most Canons since. Its feature list is more than adequate for my use, and, I suspect, for that of most non-professionals. I find that most people set Canon EOS models on Program anyway, and don't use 10% of the camera's capabilities.

Strength:

Solid, heavy body. If you drop it, nothing happens! Easy to use camera with just a few basic functionalities. With a 50 mm f/1,8 lens my favourite combination.

Weakness:

Noisy shutter and rewind and a little slow Autofocus.

Great value for this camera which is for sale for around U$200 in almost every 2nd hand camera shop. Good AF camera for those who want to start taking pictures (although no custom functions are available), and still used by experienced photographers.

Strength:

Has all the exposure modes minus program with shift;
6% fat spot;
Large viewfinder (comparable to EOS1/1n/1v);
Drains almost no current during very long (night-time) exposures;
Very good construction (tougher than the EOS 10, 100, 5, 50 or 30);

Weakness:

Lacks predictive AF, multiple exposure and flash exposure compensation.
Also, it is impossible to bypass automatic rewind, and the electronics don't deal well with high humidity. Needs accessory grip to work with remote cord.

Tough camera with complete metering and exposure modes that accepts a wide range of accessories. If you are an advanced user, better use it as a backup camera because it lacks several advanced functions.
Go for the very similar 620 if you need higher flash sinc (1/250), back-lit LCD, AEB or a built in remote cord plug; or for the more recent 600 (630) if you need multiple exposure, predictive auto-focus or custom functions.
For up-to-date auto-focus and flash metering, better buy a more recent camera. A second hand 50E/30 should be relatively inexpensive altough more fragile and with a much worse viewfinder.

Customer Service

In Portugal it is awful (Seque): extremely slow and expensive.

Strength:

Good, solid and predictable. The weight of the camera makes it feel like I'm holding a camera. I'm not used to a lighter one. The grip is just the right width and depth. Battery does go on for a long time before needing to be replaced. This camera shoots great pictures!

Weakness:

AF is not always accurate and allows for too many out-of-focus shots, even if some of the unintended ones are nice.

It has served me well.

Strength:

This camera is as solid a camera as anyone will need. I used it for four years as my main 35mm and loved it. Solid, crisp photos, good focusing, and durable.

Weakness:

two things, yes it does have a loud rewind as many have pointed out and it also has a tendancy to stray from the main focal point.

only reason not my main camera is age and updated to a brand new A2E (got a great deal on a close out). Loved this camera and still serves it master well! ;>)
