Strength:

Lots of functions to satisfy as beginner or a more experience photographer....like that the flash pops up under the ''full auto program mode

Weakness:

Would like the viewfinder to be brighter and have a grid...but that is being nickpicking!

Bought this camera (Elan 7E QD) as an upgrade to my Rebel XS QD...really like it...feels very comfortable....weight is good...easy to use command dial....and more of the functions are easily accessible. And the manual is fairly good at explaining!Good camera to grow into for anyone interested in serious photography, yet at a resonable price.

Customer Service

Called to make sure the camera WAS under a USA warranty and to ask about getting a manual for my older camera...very nice and helpful

Strength:

-fast and quiet AF -small (a strength for street work) -very lo energy consumpction (4 AA batteries imprefs for 1/2 year)

Weakness:

-AF in lo light situations (the light asisst on camera is VERY annoying) - speedlite with AF asisst is a must -small (for comfortable work must have battery pack)

It''s a great camera. My first was EOS 500, and this is my second. I use it with 28-105 and 380 speedlite. Body is ok, AF is quick but it doesn''t work properly in lo-light situations (there flash AF assist is very usefull). As for me it is too small without battery pack, but in some cases it is a plus (black body and small lens- aren''t eye catching). Btw eye control works properly but it must be calibrated many times. I can''t imagime quiter camera. Good for everyone, even pros. Maciek

Strength:

Built, Metering, Features included, Depth of Field preview, Very quiet shutter.

Weakness:

I cannot think of many, I dislike the fact that the LCD does not light up.

I bought this camera last spring as an upgrade to my EOS3000 kit. Right away I was amazed at how easy this camera was to use. It''s well designed, feels great in your hands. It as very usefull features and can cover almost all of your needs without the cost of a truly "Pro" kit. I strongly suggest that you get this camera with the 28-105 USM lens or the 28-135 USM IS (twice the price). The camera''s metering is very accurate but without the proper glass that won''t matter much. I''ve shot about 100 rolls of film with my ELAN7e so far and it''s been nothing but a pure enjoyment.

Customer Service

My EOS 3000 had an electrical problem once and Canon took it for about 2 months to fix the problem.

Strength:

Bristling with technology Feels good with the BP300 grip Superb evaluative metering system

Weakness:

A touch too plasticy

I bought this camera as an upgrade to my EOS300 which I always felt was too ''lightweight''. I got the camera as a kit with the 28-105 mkII USM which is a good solid lens and feels 10x better than the standard 28-90 lens. I didn''t get on well with the camera at first as it felt too small in my hands. I added the BP300 grip and it was transformed! The handling is now faultless and there is a very useful vertical shutter button too. the only problem I''ve found is that finding a zoomster-type case is now a bit of a problem. The only disconcerting thing about the camera is the plastic ''creaks'' a bit when I hold the camera. I''m not saying that plastic is a bad thing (I''m a Polymer Engineer!) but some parts like the camera back could do with being a bit stiffer. I used the camera ''in anger'' for the first time on a trip to Namibia. It performed effortlessly for wildlife photography with my Canon 75-300 lens. The winder caused a few laughs on the safari truck as I blasted away at 4fps! It was so quiet and sounded sooooo professional! The results with Kodak EBX slide film were superb. I really can''t fault this camera for someone who wants a serious piece of kit without buying pro gear.

Customer Service

No problems with this kit. However my previous EOS300 had to be repaired by Canon UK twice when the focussing screen became detached. The second time they had the camera they lost it!! Jessops step

Strength:

Eye control is superb and very accurate. Very fast auto focus. Very easy to use.

Weakness:

None.

A very worthy camera. I have read a lot of the reviews on this site and agree with the vast majority. It''s very comfortable to hold and can be very easy to use, using the fully auto mode, or more advanced using the manual modes. All in all a very worthy camera. The best £450 i''ve spent in years!

Strength:

Very fast auto focus, quiet shooting, eye control, ergonomics, ...

Weakness:

Door for battery compartment looks very weak. AF assist is not too usefull.

I got this camera 5 days ago. It costed me $1050 Canadian dolars for the camera and 28-105mm lens. I can only say that I am amazed how god is it. I read some stories here how eye control didn’t work for some people, but it works PERFECTLY fine for me. You have to be careful if there are more people who will be using camera. Each person will have to use different number for Eye control calibration, and that’s it. After that, it is scary how accurate is it. As, many people before me mentioned, don’t buy the default kit, upgrade it to 20-105mm lens or even 28-135mm if you don’t mind a little bigger and heavier set. I really enjoy the camera.

Strength:

Lightwieght, eye control focusing really works, sturdy construction, able to modify fuctions of the different dials and buttons to suit your style, good exposures even when set in full auto mode for my wife.

Weakness:

No spot metering.

Just a great camera. It has all the features I could ever want right now and even if I upgrade to a true "professional" body in the future, I feel this would still be a more than able backup. I have used this camera with a variety of lenses, in different lighting/weather conditions and have never been disappointed with the results.

Strength:

Fast, nice grip with the Battery Pack, Silence. Lot''s of personal settings possible

Weakness:

A bit small without Batterypack. Rewind button at the back, it''s to easy to push at. Maybe it would be nice if you could link it with a Firewire to your PC for the personal settings.

A really good buy ! A good grip if you add the Battery Pack, you get a very nice vertical grip that''s really great. A really handy part is that the AF point blink after you focused. This allows you to see were the AF focused at. Good balanced Flash photo''s.

Strength:

Metering accuracy, eye control focus, high speed flash sync.and user friendly controls

Weakness:

Needs true spot metering mode and wish eye control worked better with poor lighting conditions.

I feel this is a great camera for a serious hobbist, beginner or even a good back up for a professional. I really like the design of the camera and find the controls well laid out and easy to use. I metering is dead on in all modes and does a good job with even difficult lighting conditions. I got the 7E with the eye control and although it isn''''t well suited for all focusing situations, I find to real handy for many. Quality of the build isn''''t up to same standards as their more expensive cameras, but feel it is well built for camera in this price range. Overall I am very pleased with this camera and feel that it is great camera for the money.

Strength:

Eye Control, Built-In Flash, E-TTL Flash with EX series Speedlites, Wireless multiflash, 4 frames per sec., Choice of meter modes

Weakness:

Focus assist light using the intermittent bursts from the built in flash.

Overall this is a great camera. It can easily be used by any beginner with the Image Zone settings such as, Full Auto mode (green box), Portrait, Sports, Landscape, Close-up and Night Scene. More advanced users will use Program, Aperature or Shuttter priority. Don''t forget that fully manual is always an option. As with most camera, this one will be used for many family shots and that is the reason I picked the Canon 7E over the Nikon N80. Anyone can pickup the camera, I tell them to turn the dial to Green or any other Image Zone setting and all they have to do is point and shoot and the flash is automatic if needed. This is not possible with the Nikon, the most auto mode is Program AE and the flash does not fire automatically. I purchased the Eye Control version thinking that I may not find this feature very useful. I had read a few reports that Eye Control did not work very well. After giving it a try it is AMAZING, one of the best features of the camera. The key is in the calibration. Take your time and calibrate both horizontal and vertical. You also need to calibrate several times: inside in a bright roon, inside in a dim room, outside in bright light and outside on an overcast day. The camer uses intelligent calibration and needs to see how your eye reacts in different lighting situations. Once calibrated correctly, I found that Eye Control focus is simple to use, compose your shot then look at the main subject to be focused and take the shot. Another great feature of this camer is the E-TTL Flash System when you attach a EX serise Speedlite flash. The 420EX was designed for the Elan 7/7E, it provides a focus assist beam that is compatible with the 7-point wide auto focus system of the camera. If you attach a 550EX, you can use the 420EX as a wireless slave in a multi ash system that is E-TTL compatible. I think I will purchase the BP-300 battery pack, which increases the grip size of the camera and also provices a vertical shutter release. Overall I am extremely pleased with the Elan 7E and the EF 28-105mm US

Customer Service

I had a few questions about the flash choices and they were very helpful.
