Strength:

Top qualities for an entry level camera. Autofocus with adjustable points and many features. Fantastic upgrade path with canon lenses etc.

Weakness:

no serious weaknesses considering the price.

Probably the best buy on the market at this time. Versatility and features are outstanding. Adding the BP200 battery grip makes it a wonderful piece in the hand. Very highly recommended.

Strength:

- good for both casual and serious use
- light weighted
- DOF preview
- High sync speed with EX speedlites

Weakness:

- Slow fps

Great for traveling. It has features that surpass most other brand/models with this price. Remember to get the BP-200 battery pack which provides a more comfortable grip. Also get a EX380/550 as the built-in flash can't do much especially with zoom lens.

I bought this camera for an extended trip to Puerto Rico. After much research at my LCS, I found the 2000 blows away the Minolta QTsi and the Pentax Zx30. It is on par with the Nikon N65, almost all the features are common to both, but the Cannon is a tad quieter and has a more rapid focus. (plus Canoga had a package deal, 28-80 lens, strap, and batteries, for $320) I think this camera is excellent for the serious beginner.
I'm now waiting on my pictures before I comment further, but I suspect they'll be awesome.

Strength:

Very versatile & easy to use. It's fairly light, which is a major bonus, especially when you're running around and photographing a lot of stuff, like I do regularly. I've found that it's very capable, whether you're shooting sports, people, outdoors, indoors, or whatever else you can think of - and as a photographer for my university paper, I shoot everything.

Weakness:

Flash isn't wonderful, but if you're intelligent and realize that any built-in flash isn't going to be very good, that's not a problem. Just get some kind of dedicated flash (I use a Promaster with a 34 m range), and you'll be set.

A whole lot of camera for the money. You might want to consider getting a lens other than the standard Canon that's usually offered - I personally use Tamron lenses, a 24-80mm and a 70-300, and both are excellent. Beginners will be able to use this one without much of a problem - if you're going to use the manual settings, just know what you're doing: i.e. read a book on photography and don't expect things to come out perfectly when you start out. If you're just using the autofocus (which most people do), then you'll have absolutely no problem.

Customer Service

Never actually had to use them - but Canon's reputation is very good.

Strength:

35 segment evaluative metering, 7 focusing points, fast autofocus

Weakness:

spot metering, builtin flash, accessories very expensive, no remote control.

Before buying EOS 300, I bought Pentax didnot like the metering, got rid of it after shooting two rolls. Bought EOS 300 kit with 28-80mm after reading the reviews on this site.

Thank God, Right Decision I made this time. Used mainly to photograph my family. Great results rolls after rolls, I bought it with BP200. I am fully satisfied with my purchase. I also purchased 55-200 USM and Sigma EF 430 St Flash this week. I think this is the best camera for beginners and intermediate users, buy it with BP 200.

Strength:

- Light weight
- Attractive price
- Depth of field preview (good for learners)
- 7 focus point w/ auto and manual selection
- Accurate light metering
- Fast AF with USM lens
- E-TTL flash and Hi-speed Sync
- Idiot-proof user interface

Weakness:

- 7 focus points! It takes a year to switch between those points and make you confused when selected automatically
- Difficult metering mode selection
- The lens came with the body is a "better than nothing" quality one.
- Battary pack PB-200 a must if the camera is being used by any human being aged over 16 who looking for a comfortable grip.

A superb camera for beginners since it has many features for you to explore. I bought it because it's light weight and want a back-up for my EOS 100 (and now EOS 30).

The 35 zone evaluative metering would never let you down. The user interface is very similar to other members in the EOS series and I can access 90% if it's features without reading the manual. It works well will all lens and flash unit that I have. I found it working extremely well with my 380EX and EF 28-105 F3.5-4.5. It still working fine with my L-series lens and 550EX, but when they are being attached to the EOS 300, you may feel the body weights nothing at all, a bit strange. The depth of field preview is a very useful feature to everyone from beginner to professional photographers.

The 7 focusing points is a joke especially after I bought my EOS 30/Elan 7E (Extremely easy in selecting focus). You have to put down the camera and press a botton and turn the main dail in order to switch between the points! Things become worse when you leave the focusing selection to the camera since after one year of use, I still can't figure out how a focusing being selected and what are the selections based on. No user selection of metering methods is also a strange design as the camera itself has all the three metering modes!

In general, it is one of the best buy considering it's price and features. For those who want to a advanced point and shoot, go for the KIT set and you won't be sorry. For someone who wanna start learning photography, go for this body also, (BUT NOT THE LENS). The body can be used as your second body as you go further!

Never tried since I bought my 1st EOS 100 about 8 years ago.

Casual

Strength:

-Light weight
-Great feature set
-Depth of field preview is nice
-Great value for the money

Weakness:

-Cheap feel

A fantastic camera for beginners and casual photography enthusiasts. The Rebel 2k has more than enough features to keep a novice occupied, yet has plenty to satisfy more advanced users. The built-in flash isn't the greatest, but it's handy for fill-flash or for quick snapshots in low light. The plastic lens mount has caused some concern among reviewers, but doesn't seem to be an issue--the Rebel series has been using plastic lens mounts of a similar design for nearly 10 years. Overall, a wonderful value for an intro-level SLR.

Weakness:

Feels flimsy if you're used to an old metal cam

After years with a manual Pentax KX, I was finally ready to move to an AF SLR. The Rebel 2K was the only camera that had features I needed (ie ASA override) and wanted (ie DOF preview) and fit my price range - the competition didn't come close. Also, a friend had purchased one of the first Rebels and was very happy with it. When shopping, I fretted about different autofocus modes, but so far this hasn't even been an issue.

I make little use of exposure modes - I either run full-auto or ap- or shutter-priority - and have found this to be a great all-rounder, for everything I do (I run the gamut - portraits, fast-moving kids, automobiles, night shots, action shots). I thought I'd need to pull out the ol' full-manual KX for some of the trickier stuff, but the Rebel 2k does everything I ask. I am 100% satisfied and would recommend this camera without reservation to intermediates and advanced amateurs.

I bought from Cameraworld.com - good price and good service. BUT -- call ahead to make sure the item is in stock!!

Strength:

Being a beginner I found the camera a delightful experience to work with.

Weakness:

Auto Focus is kind of slow, but the pictures are great.

I would recommend this camera to anyone who wants to get into photography like myself. I would also recommend buying the 300mm zoom lens it only cost me $219.00 when I purchased the camera.

Customer Service

I've contaced Cannon customer service and found them very helpful.

Strength:

The kit version cannot be faulted for its price. Camera performs well under most circumstances where metering is concerned.Certainly performed better than my Nikon FE2. The ergonomics is wonderful. Camera is extremely light and will make a good companion for travel. Built-in flash is adequate for exposing the subjects, but the background always comes out dark. Not surprising since its power is limited.

Weakness:

The 28-80mm kit lens is rough when you turn the rings. Otherwise, performance is good. Pictures are very sharp at 28mm and 50mm, but not very sharp at 80mm setting. Not sure if this is a problem with the lens of this type. The multi-point AF(7 pts) is a let down and can best be described as a nuisance. There are too many steps involved to manually select the AF point, so most of us will put up with its idiosyncracies. But under normal circumstances focusing is very fast though. If you are using the built-in flash, and aim in the dark, be prepared for pre-flashes and numerous huntings before the camera can get its autofocus right.

Value for money.Suitable for travel.

Customer Service

Canon Singapore was helpful when I made some enquiries. But they could not help me when I requested to substitute my free Canon scanner(offer with the EOS300kit) for a BP200.
