Strength:

Gives you all you need to start out - too many functions will confuse the average beginner, but you have full manual control over this one. It''s compatible with every EOS lens you can find, so if you can afford EOS lenses, that''s great. I don''t know that you''d really want to use every kind of lens on this one, though, mostly because the higher-end lenses tend to be more useful on the higher-end bodies. It''s a Canon. They don''t build garbage bodies (well, perhaps the Rebel G...) any more - you''re getting quality with this one.

Weakness:

There''s a ton of plastic - not necessarily bad, but certainly breakable. You''ll feel very limited if you shoot seriously on the Rebel for a year or two at most. Again, not necessarily a weakness - it just depends on how you plan to use the camera. A bit small to fit in the average guy''s hand - I know it felt a lot better with the battery pack.

A very good camera for a beginner or the casual photographer, the Rebel 2000 does more or less everything you could need it to when starting out in photography. Yes, it''s very basic, but still gives you enough control that you can learn quite a bit from playing with all the functions. Read the manual, read books on photography and you''ll be able to do things with this one. But please, don''t buy an SLR just to have an SLR. It''s not a point-and-shoot (though, somewhat unfortunately, you can use the Rebel just like one), and you''re just going to look like an idiot if you go out and shoot on your nifty SLR just like you would some crummy little disposable. Don''t cheat yourself. And on that same line, don''t cheat yourself by buying the Rebel in the "kit" - in fact, never buy any camera in a kit. Buy the body only, then slap on a 50mm f1.8 or pretty much anything but the 28-80mm Canon (or anyone else) wants to sell you. And you''ll keep this one around even if you move up to other equipment - it''s a good backup (or backup backup, as the case may be) and can perform pretty well in many situations. If you shoot seriously, you probably will move on to other Canons (or maybe you won''t, anything''s possible), and this isn''t a bad way to start.

Strength:

Simple to use. Well placed buttons. Good metering

Weakness:

Plastic body Plastic Mount Bad AF in dim light

Bought this camera when it just reached the shores of Singapore, and never looked back since. I have shot about more then 100 rolls of film on it, and non has failed me. But one thing is it''s AF capability on dim light. It just cannot AF well, and some pics will turn out blur. but MF wil solve that problem. Metering is good. But if they can improvise on the plastic body and the plastic mount, i think it would make a great body to last through many years. The buttons are well placed to allow easy access to other functions, like changing the focusing points and such. Simplicity seems to be a its characteristic.

Customer Service

Sent to a shop to service the prism as a speck of dust has entered. This was after 3 yrs of use.

Strength:

- host of nice features - reliable (yes, the lens mounting is plastic - but, alas, it never failed me, and i do my fair share of switching lenses!) - cheap - easy to use

Weakness:

as mentioned before: - af in low-light - the built-in flash (getting an ex-series flash solves almost any problem) - it''s not possible to rewind the film in such a way as to leave an inch or so out of the cartridge

i''ve used the eos 300 / rebel 2000 through my extensives travels to rather extreme locations (from 6000m / 18.000ft in the himalayas to the dry heat of the namib desert) and it NEVER failed me. true, it''s not a pro cam, but then again, it''s not meant to be one, is it?! it''s light, easy to use, reliable and it does have some remarkable features (dof-preview etc.). however, do yourself a favour and get a decent (ef-)lens. the 28-80 provided in the set is, frankly, crap. a very good amateur cam, for the price you can''t go wrong; even a pro might just consider it for a backup. just a short general remark: you dont get *bad* cameras these days. all the major brands deliver good quality & features. so what you should also look out for is how the camera handles (which is quite a personal thing!) and the possibilities the whole system offers (talking about lenses, flashes, etc. - even upgrading to a new body!). keep in mind that a good lens does more for you than a fancy body.

Strength:

Depth of field preview is useful. Other improvements over the 500N/Rebel G include a silent timer mode, faster motor wind. Has most functions and is good value for what it is.

Weakness:

Uses CR2 batteries which cost more and get used up faster than the CR123''s that were used in previous models. The grip is not as comfortable as the older models, and may feel a little small for most hands. Rather plasticky... I wouldn''t drop it on the floor, but then you get what you pay for. If you''re going use it a lot, either be careful or get a more robust model.

It is a pretty able camera with most features that a beginner would need, and adequate for more advanced users.

Strength:

Meter, features, performance, price, light.

Weakness:

Cheap and plasticky build, mirror thud.

OK, this is a pretty good camera - I''d better say that first. Excellent meter, got a real depth of field button, superb value for money, has a remote release socket (but alas not a cable release socket). So why haven''t I rated it higher? Mostly down to the unholy and resounding thud the mirror makes when clanging into the screen. OK, I''m spoiled by so many of the EOS family being so quiet, but it does really irritate me, and I''m concerned as to what amount of camera shake it introduces. It also feels just a bit too plastic at times. But if I could rate it 3.5 I would, and it has the great advantage of being able to take Canon EF lenses

Strength:

Low Price Better bang for the bucks Impeccable metering and AF ...What more does a beginner need?!!!

Weakness:

None that I can see as an amateur

I borrowed this R2K from my cousin a week back and believe me I am positively in awe of the features it offers. The 7 point AF is a boon and the metering is just perfect.Definitely a better buy than the NikonF80( which I was seriously planning to buy) or the Dynax 303 Si.And yes, the BP200 with a 50mm f1.8 and maybe the 420EX(if you really need it) would be the best combo.
