Strength:
lots in a small body. light. technically capable. good bargain. often does one shot extra per roll! Very good grip, and useful spot buttons on back.
Weakness:
100% tacky plastic! A single shuffle toggle for setting everything is a bit too tricky. no DOF preview, limited flash sync (1/125), no remote control or PC flash connections. This camera has great features in a pretty disappointing body. It is great to start with, has a swift AF, good metering, and lots of custom functions (not essential). The problem is although it is very capable, the tacky plastic finish makes you hope for something more substantial, like a 600si or even a good old 9000 AF. |

Strength:
ease of use - quick and easy to change settings by 'feel'. It feels very good in my hands, but my hands aren't that big. there are a bunch of custom functions, but i've used only about 5 of them. An excellent camera to grow into - you can use the 'point and shoot' or go fully manual. If you want to give the camera to someone to photography you, there's an easy 'idiot' button to press to make the camera work like a point and shoot before you hand it over.
Weakness:
remote release, wireless flash.. metal lens mount. I change lenses quite frequently, and the lens mount is showing a bit of wear. i'm looking at upgrading to the maxxum 7 now because i do want some more features. I have had problems with lens lock up in low light conditions when using non-minolta lenses (ie Tamron 28-200). but i hear this isn't rare with non-minolta lenses. I wish it had DOF preview... the flash sometimes takes a while to fire.. I've been using this camera for almost 4 years and have been very happy with it - shot over 150 rolls of film, gone thru 3 sets of batteries... used it in everything from the desert, to the arctic. It had the best features for price when I bought it. They came out with the Htsi Plus about 6mos after I bought mine, but i never felt the need to upgrade, this camera had almost everything i've needed thus far. Customer Service never needed. Light, attractive, has more features than any advanced amateur will ever need.
Weakness:
Fragile, compared to other camera bodies with a lot of metal. An outstanding first AF camera for anyone! Before buying, I looked seriously at the Canon Rebel 2000, and the Nikon F50. Light wieght, a lot of fetures I haven't even had the chance to check out yet. You can decide for yourself how you want some of the settings.
Weakness:
