Konica Minolta Maxxum 7/Dynax 7 35mm SLRs

Konica Minolta Maxxum 7/Dynax 7 35mm SLRs

DESCRIPTION

The Dynax 7 offers a superb balance of state-of-the-art technology and excellent controllability as a photographic tool. This new SLR accomplishes the features that require conflicting technologies at times; first-rate autofocus vs. highly controllable manual focus, sophistication of user interface vs. familiarity of control style, and superior performance vs. compact design.

Strength:

Excellent handling
Top Flash exposures
Stylish
Pleasant learning tool due to DataSaving capability. Built-in flash.
24-105 lens very capable.

Weakness:

Limited D-lens range, polycarbonate body.

This camera is competing with the F100 and EOS 3 when it comes to features. Chose Minolta, because it was alot cheaper and had built-in flash. Don't have a metal body though. Got excellent results and it is some much fun to play with!

Strength:

A camera that allow you to think when you want to. Pro-quality! Great ergonomics!

Weakness:

The rear control dial adjusts too easily.

This camera is a real treat to use. It set you free to do do what you want. The focus is very fast and sure. The exposures are always spot on. It is a good choice for experience/professional users. May be too complex for the beginner.
Highly recommended!!

Strength:

Data Storage, Layout, Metering, Autofocus, Compact Size

Weakness:

Not as sturdy as a pro camera. Minolta doesn't currently have Image Stabilization lenses like canon and nikon.

I love the camera and would highly recommend it to experienced amateurs and up (even pros as a backup). As mentioned above, it would be nice to have image stabilization lenses (similar to Nikon and Canon) and hopefully Minolta is working on that. For all normal shooting situations I have found the autofocus and metering to work perfectly. I also really like the data storage capability; after shooting a roll of slides I can review the shutter speed and aperture, and this way I don't have to manually record them after every shot. It is a great learning tool.

Strength:

Clear overview of controls.
Superb monitor on backside of camera.
Extremely accurate exposure meter.

Weakness:

Does not operates properly with non Minolta lenses...

99% of my work is done in dim lit, high contrast jazz clubs and sometimes in concert halls where one can concentrate on the subject without being bothered by the light conditions.
I've been using Minolta cameras for years now, the 9xi and 600 si Classic but this new Dynax 7 is really the state-of-the-art camera Minolta has ever build.
One less positive remark perhaps. It doesn't work properly with non Minolta lenses and this might be the way other manufacturers will follow in the years to come.
The machine is crampacked with so much software that one who buys a Dynax 7 will have to settle for original lenses, although some independent lens manufacturers produce lenses that are optically as good as the originals.

Strength:

*Faster focus than earlier models (I used a 700si)
*Comfortable feel, backlit display, stronger, lighter more durable body.
*timing modes can be locked (timer) rather than having to be selected once fore very picture. Mirror lock up.

These are just a few, but this things's awesome!

Weakness:

Seems to require propriety(minolta) or at least newer lenses. Will not function with my 75-300 Quantaray tech II. The AF selection points I still haven't figured out how to change them. Dials aren't as ergonomic as the 700si, and is also stiffer. Also, the turn dial selectors being activated by a push down button, make adjustments impossible while still looking through the viewfinder.

even though there are a few quirks about this camera, it has everything you could possibly need. This will surely be the last 35mm camera I will ever need to buy.

Strength:

all controls are at hand, autofocus is good, lighter than previous cameras with these capabilities. data logging is excellent as is rear display.

Weakness:

does not work with older (!) lenses (although Sigma have offered to upgrade my 28-70 EX)to work with the 7, 50-500 is ok.

Compared to the 800si, is a dream to use, no opening back doors to find functions, and they are switchable by the user, unlike the 800si which switches back functions once used. I am using with the D 24-105 lens which allows DOF data on the back to be displayed. Diagram of which honeycombs are metering what level of light is excellent as is the detail of the 7 last rolls of films used -down to the focal length. Mirror lock up (via self timer) is one of the main reasons I bought to superseed the 800si, for long focal length shots. I was considering the 9, but careful analysis of the 7's spec sheet shows it is much more technically advanced, has the 9's functionality, but is not encased in metal. VC7 grip is a must although expensive, as stated before this is a battery eater-buy some rechargeables. expensive though

Customer Service

robust when I tried to find out about lens compatibility.

Strength:

AF Speed.
Ease of use.
Metering.
AF tracking is very good.
1/3 stops.

Weakness:

Not sure about letting the camera choose the AF sensor for you, as it does not always pick the correct one.

You can not use all the AF sensors at the same time. so you could have a really wide AF area to work with.

A very good camera. Nice to hold, I was shocked by the size of it at first without the grip. It felt very small. But put the grip on and its nearly perfect. The layout is great. You can go from single shot to continous drive without taking it down from your eye at the twist of a dial.
Why can't we get a camera where you can use the self timer and bracketing at the same time. As I do a lot of slide film in the outdoors and its nice to get some of your self in them. But to use the self timer and bracket your shots is a pain with any camera.
Its good the way you can choose 1/2 or 1/3 stop by just turning a dial. Has nearly every feature you could want.
Its great you can look at the metering index on the display at the back with out looking in to the viewfinder.
AF speed is very good even with a Sigma 70 - 210 f2.8 attached. Took some photos of motor racing last weekend. 96% in focus, other 4% that wasn't, my fault. It tracked Rally cars coming towards me, going away from me everything.
The metering is the same as the 800si. Very good.
There are lots of other good points and very few bad ones. I would highly recommend this camera to everybody and anybody. Its easy to use and good fun.

Strength:

Autofocus fast and accurate.
Metering is incredible - especially FLASH METERING. Handling and ease of control. Rear LCD navigation panel is really useful, as are features such as scene brightness distribution, data memory, depth of field display, a plethora of custom functions....etc
1/3 EV increments, Wireless high-speed sync with 5600 HS(D), HUGE and very bright viewfinder, too many things to list.

Weakness:

Cannot really think of any... maybe the autofocus thumb pad takes some getting used to, but that's about it at the moment.

THIS CAMERA IS AWESOME. I was reluctant to spend quite as much as this, but have absolutley no regrets. I use the 24-105 D and 5600 HS(D) and the combination is incredible. Metering is just amazing. I am yet to find a flash shot that I am not totally pleased with. I thought the old non distance integration metering was good, but after using this system I am totally sold on the new D system. If you are looking at cameras in this range (EOS 3 or 30, F80 or 100) MAKE SURE YOU TAKE A LOOK AT THIS. I just couldn't find a Nikon or Canon body that felt so good in hand - handling and functionality is unsurpassed in the Dynax/Maxxum 7.

Strength:

Fast AF, excellent metering, very easy to use because of the large lcd menu panel

Weakness:

Seems very light and may not be very durable....I hope I'm wrong here.
Not compatable with all of minolta's flash equipment.

The fastest AF camera I have ever used. Overall this is a great easy to learn, easy to use camera.
