Strength:

build quality

Weakness:

not easy to oparate manualy.

a great auto-camera, a modern workhorse. i loved its build quality, solid construction, and good mechanics.
BUT - if youre looking for a good manual camera, forget it. it sucks. all the controls are hidden inside terible push buttons and stupid lcd, led, what have you nighmares. the new 9 is the answer to these problems.
bottom line, avoid it. (sorry...)

Strength:

Ligth weigth
TTL flash metering and mixed ligth (ambient7flash) mnagment.
Shuter top speed and flash sinc speed.
brigth viewfinder with eye correction.
Ligth metering.
fast responexelent lenses
and a lot more.

Weakness:

pre-flash fotometer (contax RTS III and minolta maxxun 9 has it)
no 100% image in the viewfinder.
Ned of cards ( no longer in maxxun 9)

A superb camera for the money you can bu it for 1/3 the price of any other top slr´s and you get an even a better camera there isnt,t to much camera thath can manage no cord ttl flash or has a shutter speed of 1/12000 or a flash sync of 1/300. I think it is one of the best 35 mm. cameras ever made it is rough and fast responsing and you have great lenses to choose fromm. Of course it is a very old model and some things get better with the new maxxun 9 but the price is not the same and if you cuold later buy a maxxun 9 you can keep the 9xi as second body

Customer Service

Not too good in Argentina.

Strength:

Fast shutter, solid, weather-resistant.
Price !

Weakness:

Takes a while to get used to (compared to manual focus cameras).

This camera has given me some very good shots. It warrants a good lens like the Sigma 28-70/2.8 or better.
Given the price I paid, there was no contest. But the modern ones (like Dynax9) are a little more convenient in manual modes.
Still, there are two easily accessible dials that are very handy & fast. You just have to get used to it.
The camera is also very robust: it even took a few drops without complaining, just like the XG1 !

Strength:

9 years after the first 9xi, no camera manufacturer has been able to build such a fast shutter. This camera is without any doubt a 100% pro-camera. For its many functions easy to use, unique functions with chipcards (ever tried the Fantasy-2? It's great!) and you can trust it in every situation! I use it with the BP-9xi. If you ever find one, buy it, it is a must!!! The camera becomes heavier (which is positive) and you change your kind of photography, because you don't have to worry about very expensive 2CR5-Lithium batteries.

Weakness:

The chipcard-door could be the weakest point on this camera. If it is open, it's possible to break it (with force).

Buy it, if you get one it perfect condition. Could be the last analog camera you're buying in life, because she is maybe more resistant than you!

Customer Service

Was necessary, bacause the flash button didn't work any more. Camera was in perfect condition when sent to Minolta Germany; when it came back slight scratches on several places were on the camera. Nevertheless, very fast service!

Strength:

Solid, well sealed, durable. Very fast and accurate AF. Excellent exposure accuracy. Easy to use. Excellent value.

Weakness:

Lacks eye-start off switch of later models.

A fantastic camera. Nearly as advanced as the newer 800si, with professional level metal frame and environmental sealing. After several years have had no problems whatsoever. Very hard to fool the autoexposure ... I use manual override much less than with my prior 7000i. Only regret is the lack of the offswitch for the eyestart.

Strength:

-strong rugged body
- weather-sealed body
- Reliable metering
- Responsive AF
- Good ergonomics; sits well in hands

Weakness:

- No mirror lock-up

I purchased it as a back up to my 7, when i need a sturdy weather-proof body. I purchased it at a such a low price which is a bargain nowadays.
It was much more expensive 5 or 8 years ago.
Though generally i don't like push buttons/ rotate dials user-interface (which is one the reasons i switched from Canon), nevertheless 9xi
is designed so smart that is an exception to that
general philosophy of design. Can be handeled fast.
