Strength:

It's a Nikon. Good matrix metering in program, cw metering, ap, shutter priority & manual. All a LOT easier to get to than any camera sold today. Nice dials to work with.

Weakness:

Mine is 10 years old.

I've taken thousands of photos great photos with this camera. It's ridden on the back of a motorcylce--shot Sturdgis, Yellowstone Park, Beartooth Highway (10,942 ft), French Quarter, Beale Street, Carlsbad, AR and Oklahoma to name a few. It just keeps working with no problems. The camera's a tool, the art is in the photog's mind. And this camera is a great tool.

Customer Service

It's a Nikon, NEVER needed.

Strength:

I bought mine for less than 200$ with a 35-70 and a 70-210 zooms... It's a Nikon, uses all AF lenses, it's pretty strong, I shoot around 36 to 72 pictures 5 days a week, and I only work in manual. Plus if it get damaged, like I fall in the pool with it, I won't cry over it like it was a F5... I make very nice photo with it, because it is not the body that counts, but the lens and the light...

Weakness:

AF is close to useless, the camera doesn't work with manual lenses, it is heavy and big, plus everybody thinks it is a bad camera, so it will be hard to sell back...

I would only recommend buying this camera if it's a real bargain, and you don't live near a second-hand store... If not, get a F601 or a F801...
But then, this camera is not as bad as what everybody says, some of us don't get the chance to work with the latest trendy expensive stuff, nor have buddies selling old great cameras...

Customer Service

That doesn't exist down here in Dominican Rep.

I worked a lot with a Minolta X700, very good, and a Nikon FE2, and I plan to get a F801 very soon...

Weakness:

An awful camera! We had one in the lab, even the tech had to break out a manual just to put film in! Very heavy. Ours was damaged in very light use too.

Buy something else.

Strength:

It does show some quality in manufacture.

Weakness:

Very heavy, Unpopular and will never be a classic

I bought this camera in 1991 because I wanted a "Nikon" and an SLR. I quickly became disenchanted with it. It soon became obsolete and was abandoned by Nikon. It is, I'm sad to say, a real "turkey". It has no cache or snob-appeal but is just a camera no one wants to own. On the flip side however, it is very reliable and well-made for a plastic camera and this shows by its 37oz. weight. I like that it has a stainless steel mounting ring for the lens. Also in its defense, I think it looks alot like the new Nikon F100. The F100 has the metal body and advanced focusing electronics for those willing to pay $2000 for the body alone. The 4004 is the forgotten one among the history of the Nikon marque because it is just so boring.

Strength:

AutoFocus but with the ability to go completely manual. Interface is simple to use. Takes great pictures.

Weakness:

AutoFocus is very slow. Will not meter with Manual lenses (AI or AIS).

Great camera as long as you understand the limitations. (i.e. I don't plan on taking high-speed AF pictures at sporting events, and my wife and I only buy AF lenses). Takes great pictures just like any other Nikon.

Strength:

Rugged, reliable (more so then the N2020), uses Nikon AF lenses. Uses inexpensive AA batteries available everywhere. I have two. Carry one with me all the time in my book bag. The thing I liked about is it's low cost - and easy replacability if it is stolen or lost (I had a brand new FE stolen out of a locked camera bag inside a locked suitcase in a luxury resort hotel while at dinner - and I travel a lot).

Weakness:

Slow auto-focus. Low light/"available darkness" sensitivity of meter is worse then MF Nikons of same era. Only major complaint is that the shutter locks in low light and also while strobe is recharging (idiot proofing).

For the money (I guess now they are $100-$150, depending on condition) it is a good buy. Typical Nikon ruggedness - and sufficiently obsolete that it doesn't attract camera thieves. As between an N4004/4004s/5005 and an N2020 or an N50 or N60 - I would go with the old iron N4004 series. The N6006 is already a diffent generation and level of sophistication.

Customer Service

Had no problems.

Dependable! Survived rock/mountain/glacier climbing drops, parachute landings, extreme weather (arctic/desert), and has toured several countries (stuffed in rucksack during military deployments) without fail over the past 10+ yrs. Faithful camera worth the low used prices.
