Strength:

durable, relaible, economic & compactiable with all AIS, AI and AF len. with built-in flash, flexible in photo-taking

Weakness:

battery is too consumed.

I totally disagree Eddlie-L'' subjective & bias comment. I ever used this camera in the first hand, the matrix system is near perfect, ever in Balance exposure. It is also a tough and durable camera. in the past five year, I brought it to desert, tropical rainforest, cliff, polar regions etc. It perform excellent and relaible. I guess the user should master it function skillfully rather than just complain.

Strength:

Well built

Weakness:

Light metering system is not precise. That makes it virtually useless for taken slides with primary lenses

I used the 601 as it''s called overhere for 2 years, from ''90 to ''92. Then I sold it and bought a seconhand F4. Problem number 1 was that the matrix metering system overexposed scenes in the tropics. When I switched to centre weighted metering problem number 2 emerged:slides taken with a 35 mm were still overexposed, the ones with the 85 mm were correctly exposed. Maybe with colour negatives this problem doesn''t surface, but for slides it''s a disaster

Strength:

The good news: The camera is very rugged and never failed me. The auto focus and auto exposures always worked in all light conditions. It was excellent for candids and for quick shots

Weakness:

The bad news: The 6006 is an early generation AF camera where all camera functions are controlled thru unique push-button arrangements. That''s fine for auto-control - set it and forget it. However, for manual operation, you have to use several push buttons for even simple control. I spent more time fiddling with the camera rather than looking at the picture I was making. The end result was a lot of perfectly exposed and focused pictures that were average at best. When I returned to the FM2, my pictures looked better from the first roll on. Other weaknesses: a) Heavy battery consumption (you''d better carry a spare because the local drug store won''t carry the one it uses) b) No depth of field preview (can not understand why this is left off any SLR design) c) Instruction book, while well written, is several hundred pages long. But, you''d better bring it along to help sort out the push-button operations. d) Fairly noisy which may be a problem in quiet places where you want to remain unnoticed.

The 6006 is a very rugged and reliable camera. If you want an inexpensive entry into the Nikon AF world, then this is a good place to start. There''s a reason Nikon sold a lot of these cameras and that is why. I had one for several years but went back to a manual FM2n since I prefer the simplicity and complete control a manual camera offers.

Strength:

- Professional features for a low price (when bought 2nd hand) - Very solid body - Good user interface - There are many good 2nd hand lenses available. - Nikon quality / guaranty

Weakness:

- I''m told it likes batterys a lot. - A bit noisy (for me that''s not a problem).

I personaly don''t like the plastic, lite SLR''s that are popular today. I like to have something in my hands. The Nikon F601 AF is a bit heavy, with a big hand grip and a metal body. For me that''s great. It has very professional features wich you don''t get with a new camera of the same price. Like auto bracketing. Like Matrix, Center weighted and Spot metering. And very advance flash features like front and rear curtain slow sync and fill flash. It''s a 2nd hand alternative to the F70. But personaly I think the user interface is better than the F70. It can function fully manual and it can use all the old (manual) Nikkor lenses. I use it with the Nikkor AF 35-70 3.3/4.5 wich is much sharper than the plastic zoom lenses you get when you buy a new SLR camera for the same price, like a Canon EOS 3000. It doesn''t have a multi exposure function, and it doesn''t have a Depth of Field preview function. The F801 has those features, but the F801 lacks the (surprisingly good functioning) build in flash. This camera doesn''t have ''programs'' but you have to make your own settings, for me that''s an advantage. There were reports that says that the auto focus isn''t working very well. I think that hase more to do with the lens that is in use, cause the AF of mine doesn''t seem to have any troubles even in low light conditions. My previous Canon EOS 3000 had more problems getting the picture in focus. I bought it with the Nikkor 35-70 and a Soligor 70-210 for EUR 365 / $318,75 and that''s a lot of camera for the money.

Strength:

Spot metering, auto modes, quality

Weakness:

When using the built in flash, Eats Batteries (as with any camera), loud mirror slap,

An overall nice camera for someone upgrading from a point & shoot. At first you might be intimidated by all the bells & whistles but once you learn about the camera, you will be pleased with the preformance.

Strength:

- Spot metering - Grip, feeling (well, if you like the "kinda heavy feeling) - Intuitive ergonomy (ie it''''s not a F70) - Has (almost) all the needed functions, and is not crippled by gadgety functions (ie it''''s not a F70)

Weakness:

- Back door notch is fragile and eventually _will_ brake... Repair is quite unexpensive though and it will last for quite a time - No DOF preview - Noisy ! - AF is not up to 2001 standards -though it works-

Excellent bargain on the used market. Efficient exposure, has all the needed functions (except for DOF), accepts the AI lenses while lossing only the matrix metering, robust, good grip, and incredibly cheap for its quality

Customer Service

Efficient. Had some problems with the 601 and 401 (back doors especially), and the F601 has some electronic problem that prevents the use of S and M modes, but it still works. Customer service is OK,

Strength:

Quite well equipped for a camera that was launched 11 years ago; has almost all that is really necessary for a serious amateur and no gimmicks; the built-in flash with its advanced control is big plus; normal cable release socket; clear control layout; spot metering; accurate (though slow and noisy by today''s standard) focusing even in adverse lighting conditions

Weakness:

1) No depth-of-field preview 2) Exhausts the expensive lithiums very fast 3) Quite noisy 4) Mirror bounce 5) External LCD panel is not lit, and some important data is not displayed in the viewfinder, so it is hard to change some options when it''s dark - particularly the metering mode! 6) Exposure parameters are displayed only in full-stop values; when the meter indicates, say, 1/60s and F5.6, the actual parameters may be anywhere between 1/90 and F6.3 and 1/45 and F4.5, which a is 2-stop difference - something to be aware of when using the camera as a light meter (Use the manual mode for this)

I bought this camera secondhand when I desperately needed a relatively cheap AF SLR, compatible with both the Nikon AF and AI systems. Nowadays its specification is not very impressive, AF - leisurely and noisy, I really miss the DOF preview, and the camera uses the expesive lithiums very fast. But still, it''s a good no-nonsense camera that may satisfy the needs of a knowledgeable amateur.

Strength:

tough and hardcore camera, does everything for you, but also lets you do everything yourself. easy to use command dial, good fill flash, in 8 years of working with this flash only 2 pictures with red eye. several different meter possibilities, nice grip

Weakness:

no depth of field preview, no power zoom for flashes, no D lenses, quite loud on film tansport and rewind, horrible battery

Wonderful camera with wonderful pictures, great for the serious amateur photographer, has most important functions and yet lets you override everything. The weaknesses hardly come close to the talent ability of this camera. The fact that you can still buy it after about 10 years of service attributes to this. This will become a classic like no other.

Strength:

seems like a great camera for the $$$. Very adaptable with other nikon lenses.

Weakness:

it seems like the auto rewind is quite slow, and its loud.

My dad is a photographer with over 20 years experience, his main camera is an F4, he played around with mine and liked it so much he went out and bought one as his second hand camera. I have been taking pics in all sorts of different senarios and have yet to have any bad pics (other than the ones I manage to screw up myself.....)

Strength:

So easy to use that a manual is not needed. Able to use almost all of the current Nikon Lenses.

Weakness:

Lack the newer features such as support for D or VR lenses. Autofocus could be faster, but hey...this is not exactly a new camera. Hate the batteries.

Great learning camera for an amateur like myself. I use it extensively for taking medical/dental photographs(with a ring flash)and also for travelling. It does not have the features of the newer cameras but I can easily live without them..for now. A Great buy as a used camera.
