Strength:

access to all of nikons excellent lenses

Weakness:

electronics are not durable
af is a joke

A good camera to learn with, but it is highly sensitive to dust. The seals are not very good, and the electronics can easily be messed up. Once this happens repair is extremely expensive and may not fix the problem. Buy an Nikon f3 (manual focus) instead.

Strength:

quite good features for the price at the time of its release

Weakness:

not sturdy, shutter blades broke twice during 3 years' use, slow auto focus, slow motor drive, auto focus by the camera is inaccurate

When I first bought it in 1987, it was a very good camera to choose from, but now I think there are many other cameras to choose for the value.

Strength:

Looks good, feels good, sounds good. Can get for reasonable $$, can use for a year and get your money back. VERY easy to use in manual mode - set the A, then use your thumb to change the shutter until the meter zeros.

Weakness:

Loud shutter and auto - winder, but it sounds cool - people think you must know what your'e doing. AF ? What AF - it's SLOOOW. Your pix will look better if you turn it off anyway. No Mirror Lockup ? - use the self timer. Won't AF with newer AF-s lenses from Nikon or third party

I got mine off e-bay, non -s. Very Happy with results. Spend your dough on good lenses and film. I use with SB28/85 1.8, 35 f2, 24 2.8. Results are really awesome
Get the manual - it answers all your questions. Moved to Nikon AF/TTL after my old T70 and Vivitar flash missed a few key shots.
Get a tripod (Kmart from 7th grade) and a ballhead ($43) and go out and shoot.Switch to manual mode and manual focus, watch your work improve !

Strength:

Nice ergonomics
Balances well with zoom lenses
Nice LCD display
Full featured w/ AF, Matrix metering, spot meter (801S), motor drive, etc

Weakness:

SLow auto-focus
Noisy when winding/rewinding
No mirror lock
You have to hold the shutter button for Bulb exposures
Not suited for tropical, humid countries since electronics fails resulting mirror locking

A good camera but you need to be carefull when buying since the Nikon tech advised be that the inherent bug of the 8008 is the mirror locking or error due to electornics failure. He mentioned that he has repaired close to 25 cameras with the same defect- more with 8008 and some on the N90.

Strength:

1/8000th of a sec top shutter speed.Solid contruction. Controls are ergonomic. Depth of field preview. Matrix balanced flash and fill flash w/ the Sb-24 and later Nikon flash units.

Weakness:

Autofocus is slow compared to newer Nikons,no spot meter.

I've been using the 8008 for the past 10years and think this is a great camera. This camera has features that you would have to pay alot more for(ie. 1/8000th sec shutter) on a newer model. I have taken some of my best work with this camera In the past I have owned the Nikon EM, the Nikon Fm2,and presntly have a Nikon 6006 as second camera(also, a great camera but the 8008 is still my favorate.) When I finally upgrade to the F-100 , I will be keeping and using the 8008 and 6006. If you can get a good price on the8008 or if you want faster autofocus and spot metering the 8008s,by all means buy it.

Customer Service

Tech service very helpful. Used local Nikon authorized repair service when 8008"s autofocus needed tunning up after five years and when autofocus and meter failed after 8.5 years. Camera has worked flawlessly for 1.5 years since last repair.

Light weight compared to other models

Good metering

Weakness:

Slow autofocus

I bought this camera about 9 months ago as I wanted to get
serious about my photography. I am not sorry I chose this camera. It has preformed beyond my expectations. I've seen many photographs in magazines taken by this camera. Nikon
should never have stopped making this - much better than some of the more recent cameras they have come out with.

I dropped my camera in the sea (was brand new), and thought it was ruined. They changed the electronics in 2 weeks for a mere 150 dollars and it has been like new since then

Well Built, Great User Interface, Extremely Accurate Metering, Good Ergnomoics

Weakness:

Slow AF, Noisy AF + Drive System. No bracketing built in.

In my mind, this is the best value in the Nikon line right now. It uses a great, quick user interface and is well built. If you need fast AF or a whisper quiet drive system, I'd look elsewhere though.

Customer Service

Tried to order a manual for my MF-21. They wanted $10. Canon sent me a manual for free on something they don't even sell anymore.

A great camera to get into the Nikon AF line. Very durable. I carry it everywhere with me. Use it in my work in insurance. (Traded my Canon FD system for F-801s. Needed to upgrade to A/F.) Matrix & Spot metering are great. Flash photography is possible w/ the F-801s(Int'l version) and the SB-26 flash. I never had any success w/ flash b/4 this. I love the camera. Check one out at the local camera shop(used) or any camera swap meet.

Plastic body(broke three times), noise and AF speed.

A very dependable camera with many features but is outdated by newer Nikon cameras that have more pro features and faster AF. Still would be a great camera for a advanced beginner to use.
