Strength:

Makes one plan and think about the shot. Build Quality Size Support

Weakness:

Flash Sinc & Dated Flash Technology LCD Light

I love this camera. I bought it in mint shape thru ebay. I like the size feel and the command you have over the image making process. No autofocus or built in motordrive to distract. Large by yesteryear standards and now considered small and discrete. I'll be taking photos with this puppy when all those newer polycarbonate bodied, glorified calculators are at the landfill site.

Strength:

Tough. Really tough. Easy to use Reliable About as adaptable as a system gets Very healthy used market - plentiful top-quality used glass.

Weakness:

With MD-4, very heavy. Non standard flash mount, so you can't use a generic flash like the Vivitar 283 without an expensive and flimsy adapter. The light for the meter looks and works exactly like what it is, an afterthought.

There's a reason why Nikon made this thing for over 20 years. This is easily the best camera I've ever owned, and I use it far more than any of my others. It has it's quirks, the most famous of which is the non-standard flash mount. I don't find it much of an issue, probably because I don't use flash a lot. I do think that the mount is stronger than most other standard ISO mounts.

Customer Service

I've never had to use it.

Strength:

Built like a tank, every imagineable system accessory, best ergonomics by far among Nikon's Pro system cameras, widely available used for not much money.

Weakness:

Without batteries, only provides 1 shutter speed and uses different release.

This is, in my opinion, the best of Nikon's Pro cameras. The Motor Drive is not clunky at all compared to the F and F2 motors, and the fact that it meters with all finders, especially the Action finder, puts it ahead of the F2A and F2AS, despite the fact that those cameras can work without batteries. It's also a much more manageable handful than an F2 or an F, and far superior ergonomically than an F5.

Strength:

Very rugged, solidly built metal construction 100% viewfinder view Several interchangeable viewfinder types, HP useable with glasses Lots of focusing screen types DOF preview button Mirror lock-up Also Nikon non-AI lenses can be mounted Eyepiece shutter Center-weighted 80/20 metering Fastest shutter speed 1/2000 sec Exposure times > 8 sec when in shutter priority possible (although not displayed) TTL metering on the film plane Manual and shutter priority metering Needs battery only for metering and shutter, everything else mechanical Lots of accessories Multiple exposure possible Highly reliable, very high quality Very smooth operation of mirror and film windin

Weakness:

Unwieldy hotshoe (over the rewind crank and the exposure compensation dial), needs adapter for ISO flashes Only Nikon flashes SB-16A and SB-17 fit directly Fastest flash sync speed only 1/80 sec Only one mechanical backup exposure time (1/60) Viewfinder illumination button not well constructed Highest film speed for TTL flash only 400 ISO Exposure lock button not very well placed Heavy When MLU activated, only manual metering possible No indication in the viewfinder that exposure compensation is activated LCD display in the viewfinder very small No spot metering No DX encodin

The (almost) perfect tool for those who like to have full control over what the camera is doing, or for those who are sick of the overengineered AF / Matrix / 3D / etc. stuff, i.e., who like simplicity. Unfortunately, none of its weaknesses has been eliminated during the 20 year''s period of production. Nevertheless, it is a pleasure to use this camera.

Strength:

Rugged, takes a licking and keeps ticking EVERYTIME The old style of center weighted metering is Great Dials and buttons are in great positions..

Weakness:

Slow flash sync, 1/80th is to slow for daylight fill photography For this reason I find myself using the F-100 for daylight shots that require a fill flash. While I just purchased the AS-9, I have not tried this camera with the new SB28 I use on the F-100, but the SB 12 works great for evening shots Also, whoever designed the camera flash attachment should be hung..

One of the best cameras ever made for professionals Back in the early 80’s I worked full time as a photographer, for a small studio. The studio only provided a medium format camera. For action, I had to use my own 35mm camera. I could not afford the Nikon F-3. and used a Canon product Finaly a few years ago, I purchased an F3 from an Ebay auction. In a WORD wow. Everything a professional photographer on the move could ever want.

Customer Service

I have owned three Nikon cameras and have never needed any service.

Strength:

Rugged, no nonsense camera

Weakness:

Viewfinder light actuating button is difficult to use

I've owned my F3HP for 8 or 9 years. Before that, I wanted one for at least 10 years. This is a superb camera in every sense- it has never let me down. While my N90S is far more feature laden, and in many instances, easier to use, I still get the most pleasure out of using my F3HP. The viewfinder is crisp and snappy. Exposure is precise, and nothing shy of a Lieca M3 has as nice a shutter advance feel. These cameras are expensive new, so I would suggest for most non-professional users to seek out a fine condition used F3HP. If you have the Nikkors, you will not be sorry. How many other cameras have stayed in production 20 years?

Strength:

Durability, compact, great metering, beutiful.
I hope I was borned earlier so I can buy one F3/T for $450US in 1983.

Weakness:

I bought it used T version for $900 US in near mint cond, so weakness is expensive.
Slow flash syn does affect me much, since I rarely use flash.

I like this camera, I was so bored with F5 because need to change batteris frequently. I once thinking keeping F3 and sell my F5, but finally they have different applications. I use F3 for portraits, and F5 for sports.

Strength:

Solid construction, durable and reliable. I like removable view finder when shooting over shoulders i re move the view finder and view the camera upside down and use it like a periscope. I also like the bright screen.

Weakness:

I dont like its limited flash options(you can't use its TTL flash function except its match SB-16 speed flash),heavy construction, slow flash synch(1/80 max),slow max shutter speed(1/2000),smallish view finder light button, but what do you expect a camera with 80's technology.

I still use it for its classic feel, easy to understand contol layout, but considering the other options you have in the same price range you can end up with far better more feature loaded camers unless your a die hard fan of this camera then by it.

Customer Service

I dropped it once on a thick carpet with a 35-70 lens but still worked(but the lens was totaled)but after a few months I had it repaired in a Nikon authorized service center for a siezed shutter curtain(I dont know if the incident caused the failure), other than that it still works fine.
