Strength:

Comprehensive features, good autofocus, solid build.

Weakness:

Not the best of user-friendliness. No depth of field preview. Some features like 5-stop bracketing is over the top

A fundamentally good, almost pro caliber, camera with lots of features, but reduced by omission of depth of field and poor eye-level controlability.

I have had my N70 for 3 years now and I love it! It takes GREAT pictures and in my opinion is easy to use, (I guess when all else fails these people that think it is hard to use could open the instruction manual). It is a good choice for the beginner or the advanced photographer. Very dependable. In my opinion the N80 is not an upgrade from the N70, just a camera for people that can't read. Sorry, I don't mean to be harsh.

Strength:

This is a very well built camera. It is very easy to handle. Matrix metering feature enables one to take quick shots even in rapidly changing light situations. I loved this one because one can use older manual focus lenses on it, unlike the recent N80.

Weakness:

Lacks depth-of-field preview button.

A great camera to start with. It makes a nice back up body when you have not much time to think and adjust the light meter. I use my F3 as the main camera and N70 as the backup with the same film.

Strength:

Great all around camera
Easy interface
Lots of features
Good feel

Weakness:

No DOF
No multi-exposure
Eats batteries
CR123...why?!?!?!?!

I love this camera. The camera has a great feel to it. Lots of people cry about how hard it is to figure out its controls, but, come on - it took me like one day to figure it out...and after that I've only looked back at the manual a couple of times. Some people just don't take time to learn new things. I'm very impressed with all the different features it has, however...it does lack a couple of things. It has no DOF -- but it you really need to check the DOF, all you have to do is twist the lens a little bit (like you're taking it off). It doesn't have a multi-exposure setting, but you can get around that. The only think that I hate about it is the fact it uses those darn CR123 batteries. But overall - a great serious amateur camera.

Strength:

lots of functions

Weakness:

no cheap cable release- not good for long time exposures

This is a good Nikon body that lets you use almost all Nikon lenses. I have some which I will never sell (manual). The interface is somewhat cumbersome, but I have managed to get around that with the Quick memory storages and presetting position to the Select button at the +/- for faster access to my exposure compensation. When used this way, it is fast, but effective. An excellent value right now. Fast operating, but AF in not so snuff as the fastest AF. Wide AF sensor is more effective in busy subjects, but AF hunts somewhat- still working around that. Spot focus is only sometimes better, when you can get a spot. All in all, a very capable camera that has limits, but you can usually work with those limits if you don't fight with it. Not as intuitive as I'd like, but fills my needs as a photographer.

Strength:

Well protected body
Many features
Compatibility with AIS lens

Weakness:

Not user friendly when compared with other Nikon cameras

This is a very good camera as it contains all the useful features in a well built body. I dropped this camera accidentally from about 4 feet high and it was hurt only with little scratches on the body. However, it is really not that user friendly. I need to check the instruction manneul from time to time in order to familiar myself with the camera. Anyway, once you have mastered the operation, it is a good camera especially that this camera is compatible with all AIS lenses. This camera is a bit heavy when I put a 28-105mm f3.5 - 4.5 lens on it.

Battery Hog

User Interface (I'll address this below)

I don't know what happened to all the old reviews, but I'm happy to leave another.

I bought my N70 close to four years ago, replacing my Minolta 7000i. It was supposedly a step down from what I had been using, but I didn't have the cash at the time to drop $900 +/- on the N90s, and I didn't like what Minolta had in my price range at the time. But enough with that, let's get back to the N70...

Typically, I am hard on cameras. I shoot mostly landscapes and wildlife, and yes, occasionally I break down and shoot my rug rats or maybe even an expedition to the San Diego Zoo. Anyway, I haul my cameras into not-so-favorable conditions such as deserts, sandy beaches, high humidity climates, stormy weather, etc., and the N70 can take a licking. Though I've never dropped it, it has taken a number of blows and bounces off rock faces. It's a tough little bugger!

The user interface has been bashed by many who claim it difficult to learn, however, I didn't have much trouble with it. This camera is loaded with features such as eight programmed exposure modes, a built in flash that you control, four flash sync modes, three metering options and three programmable "quick recall" modes. It also can be used in 100% manual mode, 100% auto mode, not to mention Aperture or Shutter Priority modes as well. This camera packs quite a punch for the price. I'd recommend this camera for the beginner to expert photographer.

Now, another little feature of this camera that I love is the built in flash.. Laugh all you want, but it is a great little flash. I rarely put my SB-28 strobe on my camera. The built in flash does a wonderful job! The other thing I like about the flash is that you have control on whether to use it or not. Many other manufacturers don't give you the option.. If a flash is needed theirs just pops up and that's all there is to it. With the N70, you need to push a button. I like having that level control.

The camera allows for single shot or continuous modes with a 3 FPS rating. Not bad since its replacement (the N80) only gives you 2.5 FPS and the F100 will shoot at 5 FPS. It (the N70) also can be switched from single focus servo to a continuous focus servo, should your subjects distance change from moment to moment.

What are the negatives you ask? Well, first off, it's a battery hog and there's no external battery pack so you're stuck with CR123 style batteries. As mentioned above, there are apparently many that have had troubles with the User Interface, but I found it fairly simple to learn. A couple other little complaints.. There's no way to make multiple exposures and there's no mirror lock. I never use the latter anyway so that doesn't bother me.

All in all, I highly recommend the N70. With prices dropping and places like eBay where you can pick up a body for around $200, you really cannot go wrong with this camera.

Never had to use for a technical problem, but they sent me a new manual, lickety-split!

Strength:

light, snappy and fun to shoot with. Nikon really nailed the pop-up flash on this one. The user interface wasn't too difficult for me, because I had previously used Canon cameras (now those are a nightmare! This camera is simple compared to most Canons)

Weakness:

with the light weight comes a cheap plastic feel, and the mirror kind of sounds like it's flopping when the camera fires (sort of a "cheap" sound, for lack of a better word) No custom functions.

If you can find a good deal on a used n70, don't hesitate. Despite the palstic feel, I've battered mine just as much as my f-100 in daily newspaper work and I assure this camera is tough as nails. The matrix metering is super, but a few custom functions would have been nice (like auto film rewind or leaving the leader out) Don't buy a new N80 if you can find a good deal on this camera, because Nikon was smart enough to allow use of older lenses on the N70 but took that ability away from the N80. This is a super camera for its price class.

Strength:

Having my N70 for over a year now, I absolutely love it! Lightweight, easy to grip. I love the flash, the autofocus is great. I love the fact that you have the option of rewinding quietly for those nature moments. To me, pretty easy to figure out. Mine didn't come with a manual, I figured alot out on my own, (hello! It must be user-friendly!), until I received the manual. The interace is fairly simple, considering everything is color coordinated! Very versatile, lots of options. The manual will walk you through everything, as long as you open it. The spot focusing works beautifully. I have only used a few different cameras, and the N70 has given me the best results!

Weakness:

Truly, not that many complaints. No warning of a low batttery. Battery hog, but what do you expect when you shoot 17 rolls a film a week!

For someone who is a little more than an amateur, this camera is perfect. Yes it gives you alot of choices to choose from, and until you learn those, the camera can be complex for the average Joe. But at the same time, you do not need to use all those features if you do not want to. That is what makes it so nice, they are there if you want them! I cannot compliment the autofocus enough, I did my brothers wedding with this camera, and I must say, I even surprised myself at how well this camera and I did! On my honeymoon last April, we went to The Biltmore Estate, and now our bedroom has blownup photographs of the entire grounds on our walls because we were so pleased with the results!I constantly am taking pictures of nature and sports shots. I receive compliments on my pictures all the time. The other reviews who had negative results, must not have the same camera as I do! The bottom line...Wouldn't trade it for anything! It's awesome! Excellent investment!

Customer Service
