Strength:

Small, tough, sexy, DOF preview, great viewfinder in everry way. Smooth as silk.

Weakness:

No mirror lock-up. At times aperture priority would be nice - I always regret the appalling ME Super that wasn't an auto MX.

This is a camera I lusted after when I was young. It's a terrific little machine that feels superb and does everything just right. I keep it in a grab bag with 28, 50 and 135 mm lenses - takes up almost no space and is capable of superb quality. And it's fun!

Strength:

Strong, compact, reliable, easy to use, takes beatiful images when used with pentax lenses.

Weakness:

they are old!

I love this camera, its so compact, strong, is supported by Pentax's excellent lenses. Intuitive and simple functions make it a joy to use. Has no unnecessary functions other than those required to take great images.

Strength:

Solid as a stone, light and handy, simple to use, smooth mechanisms.

Weakness:

None.

I've bought the MX as a first camera from my brother who had had it for ten years from when he was studying photography. It's family possesion for over 25 years, and it has never failed. That's the main story: no matter what they tell you, they don't make camera's like that anymore. For professional reasons I'm now using EOS'es (both digital as filmcamera's), but every once in a while i lay a roll in the Pentax, and I tell myself: heel, that's the way to make photo's...

Strength:

Reliability - built for proffessional work. Simplicity. Extremely small and compact - among the smallest slr's ever made. Interchangeable focusing screens.

Weakness:

Max shutter speed - 1/1000. No mirror lockup. No ttl flash. Max flash synch - 1/60. Max film speed setting - 1600 iso. LED meter display instead of needle. Lack of apperture-priority auto makes shooting on the fly difficult.

I inherited my MX from my father and have used it to learn how to make photographs. As everyone has said the camera is fantastically reliable although I fear for the meter now that the camera is +- 25 years old. Simple and effective. Don't let anyone tell you that a camera like this isn't capable of making breathtaking images.

Customer Service

Once had to stick the cover down with superglue - if that counts.

Strength:

Solid build, but light. Excellent meter and superb design. All the good aspects of the K1000, but with more facilities and less weight/smaller size.

Weakness:

Dim viewfinder LEDs in bright conditions and a limited shutter-speed range, but otherwise none.

I bought an MX to replace an ME Super (stolen) and found the MX far superior in build and meter performance. I bought it second-hand for 120 UK pounds (your site doesn't understand this concept) five years ago and it has never let me down. I use the camera for wedding photography and for my real job - which entails a lot of fieldwork - and wish some company still made cameras this good!

Customer Service

Never been needed for five different Pentax cameras in 23 years.

Great camera. This camera was taken out of the drawer after 10 yers of inactivity! Just had to blow the dust of and put a new set of batteries in to get it to work perfectly. I use the Pentax smc 50mm 1.7 lens.

I've only ever used two types of SLRs the Pentax Mx and a Pentax K1000. Most of the photographers I talk to say that the K1000 is best for people just starting out but i completely disagree. I find the MX easier to use and its just as durable as the K1000. I aquired mine from a relative and she used to be a professional. She has had a variety of cameras over the years and she says that the MX was the best one she ever used. I use mine with a Tokina 35-105mm zoom and I get great results in black and white and in colour.

Strength:

Metal body, good feeling Size Good quality lenses, still available Simple design, helps you to go to the basics of photography.

Weakness:

Somewhat small finder with information not always clearly visible. Nothing more

Bought my MX after having a Praktica B200, with electronic problems that time. I really wanted a mechanical camera and never regretted this buy. In the boost of nowadays electronic SLR's with thousands of possibilities this MX gives me some rest in taking pictures, taking time for good composition, and results are fine using the original Pentax lenses. Instead of my other SLR with 28-200 mm zoom I recently extended my original 2.0/50mm and 3.5/135 mm with a 1.8/55mm,a 2.8/28mm wide angle and a Takumar 2X converter:quality is great. The MX suffered from travels having had some repairs after hiking in Turkey, rough car travel beginning 90 in the Baltic States, holidays in Norway etc. Recently had it serviced because ribbon got sticky. It is now ready for the next ten years. Never will sell the thing, the price I paid for it is still there now ! Winder is rare to get and expensive second hand, availability of SMC-M lenses is reasonable, but check prices at different stores. Paid too much for my 2.8/28 mm !

Customer Service

Used it twice for repairing. Servicing done by a local repairfacility.

Strength:

simle, run without battery. so you can rely on yours wherever you go. cheap SMC lenses, you can buy one less than half pricce of lenses from other ...on makers.

Weakness:

sometimes, light meter does'nt work. but I think it is due to its old age.

This is a good canera which could satisfy both beginer and semi professional. before this camera I had used ME-super which is superb, but lack of depth of field preview made buy a used one. after one year of use, I am generally satisfied with the simple feature, but often light meter doesn't work properly. but you have to concern that it is 20 year old camera.
