Sigma SA-5 35mm SLRs

Sigma SA-5 35mm SLRs

DESCRIPTION

The SA-5 is a highly automated SLR that integrates all of Sigma's advanced technology — not to simply automate photography, but to enhance each and every picture you take. And, the SA-5 is also versatile enough to allow full manual control as well. Control that lets you capture all the subtle effects only a manual camera can … yet still provide all the automatic advances you enjoy most.

Strength:

The Sigma SA-5 35mm film SLR camera with a 100mm-300mm f4.5-f6.7 lens produces a very good photograph ("as is". No corrections) when I used it in full manual exposure mode.

Weakness:

There is no Sigma SA-5 camera service center here in the Philippines? The camera will be shipped to Sigma Japan? Only Sigma lenses are serviced here.

Last March 9,2012, I bought this (brand new) Sigma SA-5 35mm film SLR camera with a 100mm-300mm f4.5-f6.7 lens at PhP3,500.00 in Hidalgo, Manila. But, I had the Sigma SA-5 camera & lens cleaned (at Columbia Photo, Rustan's Superstore, Araneta Center) first...because there's fungus, foam debris and dust inside.
I tested this Sigma SA-5 camera using a Fujifilm YKL 100 (PhP70.00) at a trip to Anvaya,Subic,Zambales just last April 28. At 12:00noon, I aimed at the horizon (the imaginary line where the sky and the sea, seem to meet). Then took a few shots at the sunset (6:30pm+) scene and a few shots with people 4meters away (from the camera) with the sunset as background.
This is the first 35mm film SLR camera that I owned in my life, I'm 53 years old now. But, I happened to test a 1978 Bell & Howell FD35 35mm film SLR camera, a few days before. I tried 7 shots with this B&H FD35. This is my only experience in 35mm film SLR before I handled this SA-5 camera.
How I wish, I could provide more details about how I tested this SA-5 camera...

Price features fast motor drive

I bought this camera for a friend of mine and got to use it over the weekend and I must say that this camera did surprise me. People give Sigma so much bad reputation that you kind of get the idea that Sigma can’t make a good lens or camera. This camera has so many features that it would keep anybody happy (except maybe the pro who uses the Canon 1v). The camera has all the features you would ever need in a camera. The only thing that I find lacking in this camera would be the Auto focus system. Not that it is bad it is just a little bit slower than, say Canon 85mm Ultrasonic lens. The Auto focus speed was just about the same as on the EOS 300 with the 28-90 lens and not noisy at all. The only thing it sometimes took the lens a little bit longer to lock on in low light. And one thing that this Auto focus system has is the build in Infrared focus aid, that is something that not even Canon 1v has. The Sigma SA 5 can focus in total darkens. The motor drive is plenty fast and this camera is definitely a camera that can grow with you. Auto focus on the Sa 5 camera is better then the new Sigma SA 7 (don’t know about the SA 9, haven’t tried it) which is probably due to the infrared light. I would definitely say that this camera with the Sigma 28-70 F2,8 lens would be a LOT better buy than the Canon EOS 300 with 28-105 f 3,5-5,6 lens. The Sigma 28-80 f3,5-5,6 lens I tried it with was no worse then the Canon 28-90 f4-5,6 lens I got first with my EOS 7. (The Sigma lens was a lot better built). Maybe some would say that the Canon 7 point Auto focus is a reason to buy it rather then I disagree. I mostly use the center focusing point on my EOS 7. The Sigma lenses are good lenses if you spent a little extra money on the more expensive lenses from Sigma you won’t be disappointed.

Strength:

This is a feature packed camera for the money.

Weakness:

Slow AF. Only Sigma lenses will work, so you're stuck with one brand.

OK for cheap hobbyist. Resale value probably nil. No serious photographer would even consider this camera.

Customer Service

I have only used this camera, not purchased one, so I can't say.

Strength:

vast array of features for the money. Its metering system is very acurate.

Weakness:

Autofocus still hesitates when a longer lens is used, but its an improvement over the earlier sa 300/n models. The viewfinder is too small for my liking and only has about 90% coverage.

The sa-5 is a very good VERY underated camera.A body c/w 28-80 zoom is available for around £160 at JESSOPS (in the U.K) HOWEVER,there is virtually no trade in value for these cameras where I live, so if you buy one be prepared that you may have it for the rest of your life whether you like it or not!

Strength:

Loads of features
Affordable price
Pop-up flash for fill, with red-eye reduction mode etc...
Data back
Mirror lock-up useful for long, bulb setting shots
IR sensor to assist with low-light autofocus
Even with all the features it is still user-friendly. I used this system for a Europe trip and the images were all great! The range of uses was demonstrated by putting it on "auto-everything" when some else was using my camera, to mirror lock-up for night shots. My brother was able to pick it up and start using more than "auto-everthing" rather quickly, which demonstrates it's user-friendliness!

Weakness:

ONLY Sigma lenses
Poor marketing - and non existent in CanadaWhich makes one wonder if it will be a long-term item for Sigma

A useful camera for the beginner to high-use amateur with features that should keep even the most creative photographers challenged. Useful and an ever-improving line of lenses which produce quality images! Check it out!!

Wow! Any mode you want.
Full Auto to full manual.
Multiple exposure, shutter or aperture priority (ap is my favorite as I love to shoot people)Great for sports up to 1/4000 sec and with the 28-200 mm lens what can you not shoot? Remote control, wireless dedicated or manual flash optional. I use it with a StroboFrame "camera flip" and the EF-430 Flash.

Weakness:

None

Great camera for a starter if he/she is willing to dig and learn. For the Pro, exceptional value and quality as well as awesome control. So much that I have not found this much control on any other camera.

Customer Service

Have not had to use it : -)

I hope I had the luck like John, I purchased it at a much higher price. :P

Best features/Price ratio. Very versatile, and easy to use. Never had any problem yet. I don't understand why John had such a bad luck with it. This camera is not junk, no way near it. It is a gem.

Great deal on the kit 28-105mm and 100 t 300mm lens kit with bag for $499.95 at B & H Photo in NYC.

Weakness:

i recently bought this camera to take on my vaction to Miami Beach. I set the camera to full Auto settings and 16 pictures were revealed out of the four 24 exposure films. This camera was a disappointment for my girlfriend and I. I was fortunate to take this piece of junk back to B& H photo and get my full refund except for the $5.35 for the battery i used on the kit.

This camera is a toy. I went to different photo stores and many sales people told me that Sigma Cameras are junk

Customer Service
