Model Reviewed: ELPH Jr.

Strength:

The Elph Jr is a perfect point and shoot camera for someone who works with its limitations. It has a very fast, semi-wide angle lens that takes great, sharp images.

Weakness:

Don't try to make this a camera that it isn't. The wide angle lens limits it's effective use to landscapes and up close people shots.

This is the smallest point and shoot camera around for the price. If you work with it's limitations you should walk away happy every time.

Customer Service

At $199 Canadian, if you drop this baby, don't bother picking it up (because you know it won't be just one piece).

Strength:

Extremely small and easy to carry around. Extremely fast f/2.8 lens that is also extremely sharp.

Weakness:

Fixed-focus lens. No mid-roll change.

An excellent little camera that I carry with all the time. Especially good when you can't carry a big SLR. It hides well in the pocket so that you can be stylish without being seen as a gadget geek.

Customer Service

Strength:

Compact size
Variety of image sizes

Weakness:

Poor image quality
Film would not load properly

In spite of the generally positive opinion of the Elph Jr., this was the worst camera I've ever owned. I recently purchased this for its convenient size; however, after a seemingly trouble-free test roll, the Elph Jr. subsequently ate up every other roll of film I loaded on vacation, fast forwarding the films and rendering them useless. To top it off, all 7 rolls of photographs from my recent trip were blurry. I voiced my concern to Canon, but customer service has been very difficult to deal with. Perhaps my Elph JR. was a dud, but in my opinion, I'd stick to 35mm until APS is no longer hit-and-miss (even the photos from the disposable cameras I purchased for $5.99 were dramatically better). Steer clear!

Strength:

Compact, light, great looks, sharp fast lens (can't beat f2.8 on a p&s!). Wrist strap is a plus. Night mode (slow shutter) is great with a tripod. The usual APS advantages - 3 picture size format, IX, compactness.

Weakness:

Weak flash and a useless red eye mode. No MRC. No multi-AF. Not fault of the camera but APS format limits to 4x6, lack of film selection, expensive film and processing.

Whether you're a beginner or an expert, you can't go wrong with this one. Makes a great gift, especially for your little sister going off to college. This is no SLR so don't treat it like one. However if you work with its limitations to the max, you WILL yield awesome photos in the least expected places (portability is a big plus). Canon seems to have gone "cheap" lately and replaced the carry bag from leather to a nylon one:( I've used it at socials, restaurants, parties, night clubs, bars, beach, sightseeing, etc. Do your self a favor and go to Ritz and buy a mini wire tripod for $3.99. It's the greatest accesory you can get for this camera - it not only looks perfect together, it allows you to frame the picture to your liking and you could also hop in the picture using the timer. The biggest advantage is for evening photography - first, you could get away using a slower (but finer grain) film. 2nd, you could take lighted sceneries w/o flash at night. Finally, the slow shutter night mode does wonders with a tripod... just remember to tell people to be absolutely still after the flash goes off! Additionally, remember to pre-focus and make sure that people you ask to take a picture does too!

Customer Service

My first one suffered from water and sand damage after a day at the beach and was "damaged beyond economic repair" not to mention a voided warantee due to negligence. So I just bought another one. The low price allows you to do that.

Strength:

Small, Fast, Cheap

Weakness:

Difficult to clean the lens and viewfinder. Not especially rugged. Trouble resolving focus in fog

A really great camera for the point and shoot/souvineer shots. Does a fair job at taking some impressive pictures. I took on several vacations including a trip through china (you can get the film in the major cities/tourist traps). Its main asset compared to the 35mm was the size. It was easy to take with you wherever you went and you could catch the photos you want because it had a fast arm and shoot time (unlike some slower zoom products). Also because it was so convienent you take more pictures than you would have otherwise. The only reall issue I had with picture quality was in medium fog, it could not get the focus right. Also getting sand and dirt of out the crevices of the lenses can be difficult. Mine lasted over 2 years before something expired inside and it wouldn't close anymore. Fortunatley with the mid roll rewind I was able to salvage the pictures already taken. You don't bother getting them fixed because its cheaper to buy a new one. Great deal for the price.

f2.8 with 400 film and a little tripod can make it
99% successful rate. No complain until a year
later its auto focusing die. I send it back 4
times and it still not working well.
So, I leave it there and buy another one.

Strength:

Size, finish, lens cover

Weakness:

electronics not robust, flash too narrow, many controls too small.

Canon expects the electronics to fail. This is why they offer directions on how to reset the camera. I've had too many rolls prematurly ended to put more film in this camera. Even with the fast lens the images are mediocre at best. This camera is suited only for times when you really just don't want to carry a camera.
