Weakness:

electrical shock and camera shutdown after 1 1/2 rolls of film

My z3 exploded with an electrical problem after one and 1/2 roles of film...Canon insists this was a problem related to my camera only. Has any one heard of a similar problem....there was a large flash of light and the sound of broken glass .....I had tingling in my hands and feet......

Strength:

take anywhere size great snap-shot photo quality remote and tripod that fits in your pocket..great combo when your in a busy touristy place or on a secluded local desig..lasting cool looks durability/dependability

Weakness:

noisy startup and zoom slow start up and focus still waiting for the flash to break...but so far so good..if it everdoes..its just annother excuse to buy another ELPH taiwan quality still bothers me..but so far so good..other than the black plastic fading into a greeny greyish black from extended use under the sun/elements drains battery quickly..can only be expected from use of flash, motorized elements like zoom and the start up....and so on

What a great investment. One year of extreme conditions for such a fancy looking camera..heat, humidity, sand, salt air, dust, drizzle, snow, bellow freezing temperatures..all the while being tossed arround my nap sack or in the glove compartment of my car, being dropped on all sorts of surfaces..hardwood, marble, concrete, interlocking, ice and so on. One year of great photos and problem free operation. I've recently have had to buy a new case for it because its cheap leatherette case is ripping in so many places from keeping the camera in less than ideal stowe. I dont know what those other ELPH owners did to get the on button triggered..but that never happened to me once. I hardly think it was a design flaw if someone is mishadleling a product. It only stands to reason that ANY product would start falling appart and produce less than stellar results if you bash it about or not take the time to read the instructions. Since I first bought it I've converted 5 of my friends to convert to this and the newer cannon ELPH products such as the ELPHjr, ELPH2, Digital ELPH, ELPH Z3. After seeing all my great photos they were sold and have been quite happy with thier ELPHs

Customer Service

other than a new case because the old one was so badly trashed from all my travels and useage(that was $10, by the way)..I havent had to spend a cent

Strength:

none except size and design

Weakness:

Flimsy mechanical quality, esp. flash Horrible optics Very expensive for quality offered

Fascinated by its size, I bought this camera to use it when my SLR was too bulky. I thought that at it''s price it would have quality optics. The only similar sized camera I had used before was a Rollei 35 which was excellent. I was very disappointed. The lens was so unsharp that even cheap 4x6" prints looked horrible. Also the build quality was very poor, especially the flash pop-up mechanism. It was sent to Canon three times because it was suspected that problems with the AF could be responsible for the blurred pictures. But other people seemed to obtain similarly blurred photographs. It seems to me many people buy this camera for it''s fancy design. I ended up swapping it for a Yashica T5 which is cheaper and has excellent optics (and uses 35mm film).

Strength:

Looks, size.

Weakness:

Very poor results. Unsharp, grainy, washed-out photos.

Received the camera as a Christmas gift. Thought it looked great, but it''''s the results that count and this camera realy is mediocre. Not sure if it''''s the small format or the camera, but I guess what do you expect with such a small negative? Olympus Stylus at 1/3 of the price blows it away. Replaced it with a Contax T3 - a different world altogether!

Strength:

Looks good...thats about it!

Weakness:

Design of flash, Power hungry, no mid-roll change. So-so picture qaulity for a camera in this price range.

Second time in two years it needs repair. (A mysterious H appears in the view finder and the camera refuses to function). Repaired first time for about $90....was advised by pro shop not worth repairing this time. Camera was NEVER mishandled (BTW...Don Knots, go back to Mayberry you must work for Canon).

Customer Service

Strength:

Size (it does go everywhere with me) build (it''s quite sturdy, metal case) picture at times is fantastic

Weakness:

Speed of focusing picture not as good as Elph Jr flash range close range focusing sucks

I''ve been using the Ixus/Elph for about 4 years, it''s never missed a beat in all that time. Had an Elph Jr/Ixus L-1 before that. It''s been dropped from fair heights (figure 20 ft), and still worked ok. Flash has occasionally stuck, but just needed a tap. You''ve got to be careful with the processing labs - I had chronic results with a 1 hour place (needed the pictures quick), and they came out worse than anything I''ve ever seen before. It also seems to be sensitive to film types as well, which is awkward .... but it really can do a surprisingly good job at times. It''s handy having the remote as well, which can make a fair difference on quality (zero shake helps!). Having said that, I still prefer my AE-1/28mm f2.8 combo for pictures/portraits.

Strength:

Design features permit simple amateur point and shoot usage, or some overriding (through a few tricks). Durable SS body, compact package

Weakness:

Weak flash design (will fail in time) and lousy repair support from Canon. (They damaged it during servicing). No slide film YET in the USA,--not a Canon issue, however. Leather case too thin, causing on switch to activate unintentionally. Solution was thin homemade titanium plate glued into case on the front side. Now bulletproof, too!

The reason the APS format continues to survive,--the ELPH! Coupled with ISO 200 Kodacolor film, this thing easily rivals 35mm. Great design,--will go down in history as a monumental product in photography.

Customer Service

Uugh! Expensive. Might as well trash the camera and buy another. It is coming to that.

Strength:

SIZE, picture quality for snapshots, construction quality of stainless steel body.

Weakness:

Battery life. APS is horible in panoramic mode and enlargements greater than 4"x6"(not enough size even using ASA 100 film). SHUTTER problems ruining entire rolls of film.

Absolutely LOVED the camera for the first 18 months. Then began noticing significant vignetting at all focal lengths. Also, seemed to run through batteries after 4-5 rolls. The last year I have seen some strange distortions that have gone from a couple exposures on a roll to the entire roll; I think the problem is the shutter. Used on a trip to Greece this summer and had bad results (good thing I took along my Contax G2 for brilliant results). I have bought a Rollei Prego 70 and will use this from now on for snapshots.

Customer Service

POOR. Canaon will only fix if you pay up front. Rather than spend any money to fix, I am going back to 35mm P&S.

Strength:

Small, cute, handy wrist strap.

Weakness:

Expensive-to-fix, guaranteed-to break flash, mediocre exposure capability, stupid control placement.

Canon should be ashamed they build this camera. The designed-to-fail flash was a needless complication that just ends up pissing off the owner when it fails (and it ALWAYS does). Whoever approved the design at Canon is a complete moron with no respect for the customer. None. The design of the onn/off switch is also ridiculous. It''s very easy to turn the camera on while it is in its case in your pocket. Further, the picture-taking quality of the camera is mediocre at best. It can handle simple exposure situations OK, anything beyond that and it throws up its hands in dispair...and gives you a bad exposure. A recent trip to Hawaii resulted in one case in only three properly exposed shots in a full roll of film. Its single saving grace is the nice-looking and compact stainless case...until the flash fails to retract.
