Strength:

shape and size--good for people with smaller hands, date and panorama for a great price
very good pictures with macro option

Weakness:

dark around edges of pictures, picture quality ok, not great--had better luck with my old Minolta Supreme before it broke!

bought this camera after reading some favorable reviews, have run three rolls through it so far and am disappointed in the quality of the pictures indoors. They seem grainy and are dark around the edges, even with ample lighting in the room.

Additional comments on my review of 4-01:
I continued to use this camera after my review and have had mixed results. All my pictures with this camera have been taken using Fuji or Kodak 400 film. My outdoor pictures on Easter were really sharp, beautiful color. I find indoor people pictures taken close-up (waist up) are clear, sharp, and the flash evenly distributed, red eye reduction works well (everyone groans about the three pre-flashes though!). If I take the picture from 4 ft or more away, even in a living room with 8-10ft. ceiling, daylight coming through the window, I get the dark edges and grainy appearance. After two additional rolls I have submitted the camera to Minolta to be, hopefully, fixed. I don't hold much hope, based on reviews I have read here and elsewhere about their service. I think if you are looking for a camera for outdoor use and don't need it for indoor pictures it'd be a great camera. It feels nice in the hand, easy buttons to push for the options, and a nice amt of options for the price.

Strength:

small & light, good lens
with 28mm wide angle coverage, accurate exposures

Weakness:

small viewfinder

This camera was bought to replace our Pentax pc35 which finally died from it's third drop and 10 years of faithful service. It was selected mostly for the 28mm setting of the zoom lens and it's small size & weight. We have put 50-60 rolls of film thru the camera in 4 years of use without any problems. Daylight exposures are accurate, and pictures made with fill flash have been very good. Autofocus is accurate, and the focus lock is a useful feature. The lens is excellent by point & shoot standards. It produces very snappy 4x6 prints and 8x10's which look good when viewed from normal distances. We always use 400 speed films, with Fuji 400 Press giving outstanding results in daylight and with flash. No real complaints about this little gem!

I just want to say you have some wrong info on this camera. I have the brochure here. It has a 28-70mm f/3.5-8.4 zoom lens. It DOES have built in flash. The price you show is double what I have seen (in a large NYC camera store.)

Weakness:

None

I haven't bought one yet, but I am seriously considering it because of the asperic lens construction. Also, check out the reviews at photo.net. They rate this camera highly. I have only checked it out in the store. The only thing I didn't like was the viewfinder was not as easy to see through as some others I'm considering (Yashica T4 or Rollei Prego 90) The rating I am giving it is based more on my opinion than actual use.....

Strength:

is pretty good. with decent light, all the pictures are bright and snappy. no zoom P&S is fast enough indoors to use smaller aperatures (better quality for lense use) and handholdable. When used appropriately (decent light) the pictures are quite sharp and contrasty- can hardly tell difference at 4X6 size with a consumer quality SLR zoom lense.

Weakness:

as with all P&S zooms, very slow/ bad at wide aperatures when light is dim. Flash is somewhat centrally bright-uneven

Great 28mm for travel day pics- use a fixed 35 2.8 p&s for night or indoor shots. or better use an SLR if you can justify the size/weight. My nikon indoors with flash is just as good as a P&S outdoors in good light. Don't expect P&S to do the impossible or where you know it will not provide good results (knowing zoom P&S are slowwwww.)

Strength:

Size and ZOOM range. Good Red-Eye Reduction. Good for travel pictures.

Weakness:

The zoom action is not smooth and can't be fine tuned tune as much as I would have liked. Tends to overexpose flash pictures both regular flas and fill flash and 800 film. Stopped working at six months and had camera replaced.

I would not buy this one again and I'd get a good 35m body with changelable lenses.

Customer Service

Not with Minolta directly, but I had problems getting Best Buy to Cooperate. They lost all of our business over their reshelving fee.

Strength:

Has a 28mm in a decent package

Weakness:

a bit bulky, sliding lense cover rattles, not ultra sharp

Has a good 28mm- actually brought it to europe on a trip and found that the 28 was very welcome. (a 24 would be even better). Performs very well- the lense seems to have "ultra contrast" - which brightens semidark conditions, lowering contrast, but brightening indoors and shadows. The lense is sharp, but the contrast is somewhat lower- giving an impression of slightly soft, smooth edges- but accurate looking- subjects don't look like glass sharp objects. Performed great in nighttime shots and in landscapes. Has landscape focus lock-very useful through windows. Overall a great package unless you really want to lug around the SLR, which will obviously have better overall quality, but limit your movement. A good snapper, city/travel camera. And a great bargain for an autofocus 28mm (not a whole lot of 28s on the market) at less than $150. 4 stars because it is not supersharp (but all the pictures were evenly exposed).
