Strength:

Small, great zoom!, lots of flash options.

Weakness:

My camera rewind is a little loud, but that is my only complaint.

I think this is a great camera. Years ago, some relatives did a bunch of research before selecting an Olympus P&S camera. My father then bought the little black epic, the upgraded to the Zoom 105. They day of our flight to the Middle East for vacation, I bought this camera (had to have more zoom than my dad!) I have no issues with the camera. My happiness with this camera lead me to purchase an Olympus D-490 (digicam), and to suggest my father and sister get an Olympus Digital Camera. I find some of the other complaints about the 140 interesting, because this is a compact P&S, so you need to know the cameras limitations. In my opinion: 1. You would use 400 ISO or faster film.(specs. 38-140mm f4-f11) 2. Being a P&S the flash is right beside the lens...so you get red eye. (as on any camera designed this way) 3. Night scene flash (on any camera) is design to leave the shutter open longer to allow ambient light to illuminate the background, after the flash illuminates the subject. 4. Flash range: (specs. 3-15 feet with ISO 400 at full zoom, 3-7.5 feet with ISO 100 at full zoom) are some photographers expecting illumination past 7 or 15 feet?(when the camera won't do it?) When you know the limitations of this or any other P&S you can revise your expectations and take great pictures. It is fair to say that it would be better with a stronger flash, or better with a flash farther from the lens, or better with a faster lens, but then the camera would be heavier, larger and have a shorter battery life. This camera has given me many great pictures over the last 6 years. The ones that didn't turn out were because of me - like full zoom in a darkened room at a party trying to get a candid. The price for Olympus may be higher, but I think it is worth the quality. As far as durability, I have dropped the camera twice on the pavement and it still works fine.

nightscape feature requires tripod

I love this camera. It is so portable. I bought it as a supplement to my SLR - mostly for candids and travelling. I find I'm using it more and more for all types of situations.

The only problem I've had is with the nightscape feature. This works best with a tripod or resting the camera on a solid surface. The shutter speed is slower so it's hard to hold the camera perfectly still without one.

I love the zoom length for such a small, light camera.

This is one of the most fun cameras that I ever owned! I was a professional photographer 20 years ago and I've used the best equipment available. I picked up the Olympus Stylus 140 Deluxe Zoom (with panorama) as a "toy" camera to have with me when I traveled on business. I have blown up some of my photographs to 16x20 with incredible results! All of my friends that purchased this camera on my recomendations are also thrilled with it. The clarity of optics far surpassed my expectations and I can't understand how anyone can complain about focus at full zoom.

*Versatile camera
*Great range with zoom
*Produces sharp photos
*Lightweight
*Perfect for traveling
*Weatherproof

Weakness:

Feels fragile in your hand; be careful with it!

This is a great versatile camera. I found it to be the pefect travel companion for me when I went to London recently, and it produced great results that amazed me for a P&S camera. I love the wide range it covers, and it's lightweight enough to fit easily in your jacket pocket. And, if that weren't enough, it's weatherproof. The best P&S I've ever had!

First roll shot produced only one out of seven closeups with red-eye, the best results from the four cameras I have owned. Very impressed so far! Easy to load film too.

Weakness:

None

Out of the box, the best camera I have ever owned. First roll shot resulted in only one photo with red-eye. Used the zoom to 140 and have not had any motion related problems. Might not be right for beginners but highly recommened!

Strength:

Took good pictures, in focus, great zoom

Weakness:

Its broken :(. I've had this camera for 14 months, probably took 40 rolls of pictures with it, the zoom lens all the sudden wouldn't retract. It was supposed to be $100 to fix it.

Up until my camera broke, I was very happy with it. I'm incredibly disappointed that it broke after 14 months. Be sure to buy this camera with a platinum Visa, so it will give you an extra years extended warranty.

Model Reviewed: Stylus Zoom 140 Camera

Strength:

The camera is very light and compact, inviting more frequent use since it is easily pocketable. It has fairly good features, including a viewfinder diopter adjustment which is fairly impressive for a camera of this type. Obviously, it is easy to operate, considering the genre of camera.

Weakness:

It is a VERY flimsy and fragile camera, especially for the price. I dropped it onto a carpet with the zoom extended, and it was a very pricey repair. Exposure system is only fair, tending to underexpose, and the flash certainly is much more limited than the reach of the zoomed out lens. I have been generally disappointed with the picture quality of this camera, after about 40 rolls. I had hoped it would be a handy substitute for the Olympus Infinity Zoom 200 which has served me very well as a point and shoot candid camera for a number of years. I would not recommend this camera since it does not meet my minimum standards for durability and dependability. Exposure and lens quality are marginal at best.

Avoid this camera until Olympus gets their ultra-compact-do-everything-point-and-shoot thing together. This one does not make it. I had such good results from the Infinity Zoom 200, that I got sucked into this one thinking it would be up to the same standards, but it clearly is not. I would look at the Canon Elf, or something else, for a very small utility camera in undemanding shooting situations.

Customer Service

I took the camera in to Olympus on Long Island in NY since it is a short drive from where I live. I argued with the fairly rude customer service rep, who finally agreed to give me a break on the cost of the repair since the camera was brand new, and I explained the circumstances of my accident. I argued that the camera had to be defective to have sustained so much damage in a 2 foot drop onto a thick carpet. I would not want to have to deal with Olympus again if I could avoid it.

Great point and shoot camera with a sharp zoom lens. The camera is easy to use and is small.

Weakness:

Red eye reduction system pre flashes like a strobe light.
The lens is sharp until around 110mm and then it is soft.

It's a great little point and shoot for family snap shots. The price is a little high and the lens is a bit soft at 110mm and above. The camera is small and easy to use and my wife loves it for those quick grab shots of the grandkids.
