Strength:

visually appealing, good camera, cheap, small, light

Weakness:

breakable, not always focused, hard to press buttons

good camera, not great. if you want a great camera, go Leica, but for a casual user, more than enough. no need to buy a slr if you are not going to use its functions and just p&s it. designed for the common person, you really only have to know to press the shutter.

Strength:

Smaller than most APS cameras and lighter than many, with the benefit of 35mm picture quality and a 'cracking' standard, fast aperture of f2.8, wide angle lens. The focusing system on this camera can be switched to spot mode which is great because f2.8 lenses dont have huge depth of field even at 35mm focal lengths and this camera seems to favour high shutter speeds and wide-ish apertures most of the time. Having said that, its no criticism, as camera shake is minimalised. Shooting almost always wide open produces a definite 'feel' to the photographs produced too- I like the way you can obtain good flash coverage of large indoor groups, and yet because of the precise plain of focus this camera is able to detect and set for the photograph in question, beautifully diffuse O-O-F backgrounds that really make the foreground subject stand out. This camera also produces excellent dusk/dawn shots and night with flash fill in - though I'd reccomend a small tripod when using such settings as slow shutter speeds may induce camera shake.

Weakness:

Delay caused by red eye reduction system can sometimes result in 'off moment shots'
Battery hungry when flash and red eye reduction used often.
Would like to see an infinity lock to facilitate a quick conversion to point and shoot! However, I'm finding weaknesses for weaknesses sake really, the good points far exceed the bad points in any analysis of the Olympus

I bought this camera new for an utterly stupid price, could'nt believe my luck. Its wide shutter range 2-1/1000 second and fast, critically sharp lens, have enabled me to produce images from a shirt pocket sized camera which rival those taken with my Nikon 35mm SLR. I much prefer a fixed focal length lens, too many people choose long range zoom options for their compact camera, all of which which have excruciatingly small apertures at max zoom, and optically poor performance in comparison to a fixed standard lens. Also Zoom equipped cameras engender camera shake if all the user ever does is shoot at max zoom, he/she will probably be shooting at aperture figures like f12.5 of f 16, wide open, so poor quality and the likelihood of slow shutter speeds will often reduce the photograph from a memorable image, to a blurred snapshot. In case I forgot to mention this, the camera features a clam shell cosntruction which protects it extremely well from the elements when open or closed. To all intents and purposes this camera is rain proof, just dont immerse it in liquids OK?

Strength:

Small, good to great optics, easy to load, rugged, cheap

Weakness:

not a Leica M-2

We took only the XA and the Stylus to China. The big Olympus with all of those lenses stayed home. We have had this camera for 4 years and put dozens of rolls of film through it. We are on the second battery.

The photos are good to excellent. The meter gets it right more times than not. You can shoot ASA 100 film without a problem. The camera has no real focusing delay and the flash recycles very quickly.

Great brief case camera.

Enjoy. Terrific value!

Strength:

Easy to use. Very durable.

Weakness:

Flash is crazy and everyone who is standing in front of it has something to say about how their eyes hurt or "what kind of flash is that"

Not a bad little camera. I like it a lot. Great quality.

Strength:

compact. lightweight. excellent photos. Very sharp lens. The batteries last a long time; this is probably because there is no zoom.

Weakness:

There appears to be a very minor light leak. I can see the exposure on my edge of my negatives (when shot in strong sunlight). However, it is on a portion of the negative that gets cropped during printing, so I don't even notice it in my prints.

About two years ago, I bought a Canon Elan II with a 28-105 zoom. I was initially very disappointed with the Canon. The Sylus produced sharper pictures. I only got comparable sharpness when I used a prime 50 mm. lens on the Canon, or if I stopped down the 28-105 zoom. The slr is fun to play around with all the controls in tricky light conditions; but if you want to snap a quick quality photo, the sylus is much better.

I will certainly upgrade to the newer Olympus Stylus Epic when this camera breaks. However, after almost 7 years, it is still performing extremely well.

Customer Service

Never had the real need. After 7 years, if it breaks, I'll just buy a new one.

Disco flash! John Travolta wants this camera! "Style" of the Stylus! Great grab-shot camera, great pocket camera. This one was the favorite w/the Hollywood set a few years ago.

Great pocketable camera. New Stylus may be even better!

Customer Service

Bought it at a garage sale and it was perfect except missing film window on back door. Olympus nice but door was $11.00 + s/h. I put a piece of transparent tape over the hole and it works fine.

Easy to use. Takes OK pictures. Zoom is handy

Weakness:

Breaks constantly. The on off mechanism is so poorly engineered it is laughable. I use it in the winter skiing .I think the switch doesn't like the cold.

I will never buy an olympus product again.

Customer Service

The worst I have received anywhere ever. Through their distributor in Canada.
4 months to get the camera repaired. I finally insisted I get the camera replaced.
An email sent directly to olympus from their website was never answered.

Strength:

I love the small size and ease of use. It takes such wonderful crisp pictures. I would highly recommend this camera to anyone who wants a basic camera that will take fantastic pictures!

Weakness:

The first one I purchased had a problem, and I was going to return it and look for something else until I went to a Photo place and they showed me typical pictures I could get with the Olympus. I promptly returned the original camera and got a replacement. I have been extremely satisfied with the camera ever since. I am glad I didn't return for another brand camera.

This camera is excellent for those who just want to point and shoot. I don't have a vast knowledge of photography, so I really appreciate the ease of use. I bought my camera a few years ago and still love the quality photos I get. When I bought this camera, I don't think Olympus had the Stylus zoom cameras. Now there are a few to choose from. However, for a no-nonsense camera, the Stylus can't be beat.

I am now transferring my photos into my computer, using my scanner. These images are very high quality, which is a testament to the quality of this affordable camera. I would highly recommend this one!

Customer Service

I have never had to use the customer service, so I wouldn't know.
