Canon Canonet QL Series Rangefinders

Canon Canonet QL Series Rangefinders

DESCRIPTION

ca. 1965 Out of production The EE (Electric Eye) feature and viewfinder were made as small as possible and the internal construction was completely different from the original Canonet, making the QL17 a totally new model. However, it had a strong Canonet-like appearance. The "QL" stood for "Quick Loading," a feature which made film loading quick and easy.

Strength:

· Very sharp and beautiful 1.7/40 lens (six elements in four groups, high quality glass) · Beautiful finished, has solid feel to it. · Quiet shutter release. · Compact yet not too small. · Automatic exposure, alas shutter priority with lock beyond limit. · Easy to focus rangefinder with fast focussing lever. · Hot Shoe and PC connector behind cap. · parallax corrected viewfinder with chosen f-stops shown in finder. · Battery test button. · 1/4 to 1/500 + B leaf shutter. · Flash sync. at all speeds. · Self timer · manual over-ride · Large, smooth advance lever · Easy and fast film loading with film advance indicator ! · filter thread (48 mm) · light meter cell on lens barrel, filters are automatically compensated. · Lens hood and original filters available. · Cable release · Tripod thread in the right place · guide number flash works really well with Canolite-D flash. · Low second-hand prices · Small but workable ASA range (25-800)

Weakness:

· Shutter priority (would have preferred aperture priority) · Shutter-lock at over and under exposure on auto. · Exposure meter doesn’t work on manual over-ride · No interchangeable lenses · outlawed PX625/MR9 mercury batteries, for a great solution for this problem mail to :battery.adapter@wanadoo.nl

The 1972 Canonet QL17GIII is my favourite rangefinder camera. I like this camera even more than the Leica CL and Contax T. I would have liked to see this camera with interchangeable lenses. When you take value for money in consideration this is the absolute winner ! Believe it or not but the QL17GIII has a beautiful 1.7/40 lens which performs even (slightly) better than the Leica CL with summicron 2/40. The camera is beautifully finished and has many advantages over its competitors. I would have preferred aperture-priority auto exposure instead of the shutter-priority, and would like to have seen the exposure meter work on manual over-ride.

Weakness:

Focus, shutter speed and aperture adjustments are very close together you can change one by accident.

What a great camera to use. A joy when doing travel photography and street photography. Simple, easy, QUIET, and very reliable. Works with or without its batteries. MINT lens quality. Best RF Value there is!!!

Strength:

Versatile features listed above plus a sharp 40mm lens, much more useful than a 50 or 55. I've used these for newspaper photography with perfect confidence.

Weakness:

The camera will not take the beating that a Nikon F will. But that's true of all other cameras.

The QL17 IIIG is the best of the QL rangefinders, but all of them are very useful. I have several. The fast lens, accurate meter, quiet shutter and flash sync at all speeds makes this camera family very versatile.

Strength:

Perfect exposure nice size- not too heavy simple to learn

Weakness:

fixed lens - but it doesn''t really bother me

I LOVE this little canon QL rangefinder. Once I grew accustomed to the focus, (requires a little more thought) I am amazed at how it handles exposure - DEAD on - much better than my newer Pentax SLR. I just let the camera expose for me now - unless I am after a certain effect. If you see one for under $90 or $100 - just go for it. ( I''m in New York City so all iss more costly...) The lens is superior to anything I''ve used yet. 8 ground glass elements. Great camera!

Strength:

Solid feel (never used as a hammer, but I guess I could!) Lens f1.7. Silent, no mirror slap, so no shake at low speed (I can go down to 1/15th sec, even 1/8th). Good quality. Easy load. Cheap!

Weakness:

Setting only up to 800ASA, and aperture up only to f16, so you have to choose the speed of film you will load. RF meter not very clear, due to age? Light meter works only in Auto mode.

This is a ''poor man''s Leica'' too, one of the best cameras to get into RF system. I''ve got the QL III, wich has a very sharp 40mm f1.7. Follows me everywhere I go. Silent, inobtrusive, practical, even in nightshots. I bought it because of the price, and also for the reputation of the lens. Have not been disappointed. People likes to be photographed with his camera. It is not the big noisy SLR systems we also use to have. Probably the best buy I''ve done in photography. Unbeatable for the price and the lens!

Strength:

Fast sharp lens Leaf Shutter Rangefinder

Weakness:

-40mm unusual focal length -Light seals usually need change -Electrical Eye supports up to 800 iso films

This is unique camera! No wonder it sold 1 milion copies. It is a rangefinder (i.e. smaller than slr, no mirror flap), it has a leaf shutter (even less vibration), the rangerfinder allows for simple aqurate focusing under low light conditions and the superfast 40mm 1:1.7 lens will blow you off!!! This is the perfect camera for available light, street photography. Small, discrete, sillent... And like it was mentioned elsewhere the light meter is placed behind the filter so that you don''t need to make need to make any exposure compentations.

Strength:

$0mm lens is so sharp! No mirror slap, compact, though not that light weight. Quick load system, battery check, and film being taken up when you wind the lever indicated. Decent metering system, and manually over-ridable. I use the readily available 625a found at drug stores nation-wide, and get good exposures! Ho much difference can .15 of a volt make in the old mercury cells vs the new alkalines?

Weakness:

Door foam needs replacing on most; it just dries out over time. Not a big deal to replace the self-adhesive foam that''s readily available. Some people complaine about no mercury batteries, but like I said above, it hasn''t been a problem

An AMAZING camera! Capable of outstanding results, if all of the buttons and dials are properly set! You have to THINK, not a bad thing. With a quality roll of any of the new films, the enlargements knock my socks off! This from a man who also owns a Haselblad 503cx, and a couple of lenses! The 40mm lens is so sharp; my clients are astounded. I bought a second g111 ql 17, one for color , one for b&w when i travel light. I like the fact that the 48mm filters cover the ee when you mount them, saving you the hassle to remember you''ve got a filter on, and what to compensate for.
