Strength:

Easy to use. Hooked it up and scanned in less than 15 mins

Weakness:

None so far. Be careful where you put this one though. I put it in a cabinet and shut the door with a film tray in. The scanner tries to eject on it''s own when you, say, close photoshop. Luckily, I heard the ruckus as soon as the film tray hit the door. Scanner seems fine -- won''t make that mistake again.

Boy is this thing great. I had bought the Minolta Dual Scan II, and had tremedous trouble with color reproduction. This one is PERFECT right out of the box. In comparing both film and slides with Photo CDs that had been captured off the same media, the Canon is actually better, a little more true.

Strength:

Hi Res.
Sharp.
Good dynamic range

Weakness:

not as good auto color calibration as HP Photosmart.
Scan is slow and noisey.

Good value for the money, wish I had a chance to try the Nikon 4000ED or the new Kodak 3600 film scanner. Not good for a high volume enviroment.

Strength:

Fast with Adaptec 2930CU SCSI card.
FARE

Weakness:

Preset dpi 1000,2000,4000
How do I scan at 3000dpi?

No Film roll adapter

Scans look just as good as the Nikon LS4000ED, I precieve no difference in scan speed from the Nikon. For the casual photographer how can you pick the Nikon LS4000ED over the FS4000, unless you have another $900 to burn.

Strength:

Small footprint. It's slightly narrower than a long loaf of bread and fit on my shelf perfectly.
Color is excellent as far as I can tell.

Weakness:

Scanning time when using USB is a bit slow. I haven't bought a SCSI card yet.
No online registration ability.

For a middle aged guy with tons of old slides to scan it does an excellent job. The APS attachment (comes with scanner) will scan the whole role unattended. The only reason I give it 4 stars is I haven't needed any help from the support area so I don't know how good it is.

Customer Service

Haven't needed it yet. I checked out the Canon site and I wasn't able to find a film scanner support area. Where do I go to get software upgrades?

Strength:

Scanner has a small footprint. The software intalled smoothly. The interface is very user friendly and versatile. Tell it how big you want the print and it sets the resolution. Colormatch works fine with PS6. "Fare" slows the scan process somewhat but the final clean image is worth it. I use USB and I'm impressed with the speed of the scans considering my computer is a 233mmx.

Weakness:

Having to print out 125 page user manual. Needs lots of ram. Photoshop scratchdisk slows down the scan process on the really big files- 256 mb is ok but 512 is better. Photoshop LE is the bare minimum. Features that are standard in PS6 are turned off in PS LE.

I wanted to use the FS4000US for at least a month before giving it a review. It more than meets my expectations. I believe Canon spent a lot of R&D on the software for compatability and smooth operation. It has a cool sound when scanning and scans quieter and faster than any flatbeds I have used. The bottom line for me is image quality and so far I have not been disappointed. I had been saving for the Nikon iv ed, but when Canon brought this out, the price and higher resolution decided for me.

Strength:

Sharp
Good dynamic range
FARE (Canon dust removal feature)
Very easy setup and flawfree software (unlike Nikon)

Weakness:

Not a high volume machine

This scanner makes very sharp scans with excelent dynamic range. It is strange that Canon makes no effort to market the quality of the scannerlens, as does Nikon, it almost made me buy the Nikon.
At this price-level I cannot imagine why anybody would even consider buying the Nikon 4000ED. The Canon scans are so perfect that there is little room for improvement anyway, so what can a model twice the price offer over the Canon? Exactly, nothing worth $900.

Strength:

400dpi
42bits
Easy to use, install, and stable TWAIN software
FARE
APS attachement comes at standard
USB as well as SCSI

Weakness:

No hardware eject button.

Excellent scanner with lots of 'growth' potential. Currently I only have the Canon S800 printer so I am limited to 8x11 print but the ability of scanning at 4000dpi allows me to cater for future printing needs.

FARE doesn't seems to work as well as Digital ICE from Nikon for deep scratches even at the 'Strong' setting. But for normal dust and spots FARE at 'normal' setting works great.

42bits delivers great shadow details. On some negs that I've tried with lots of dark shadows, 42bits 'drags' far more details out than 24bits. So it does what it says on the tin:)

The TWAIN software is easy to install (take all of 10 mins including reboot) and use. No crashes at all, unlike what I've heard about Nikon software. Though I haven't experienced crashes while using my friend's LS-2000.

The only issue I have with it (and it is a really small one) is that there is no hardware eject button. If I have forgotten to eject after scanning I have to bring up the TWAIN software again just to eject the film mount. The only way round this is to set the TWAIN software not to quit after scan to give me chance to eject before quitting.

Strength:

4000 dpi
Sharp corner to corner
Good scans with color and b&w negatives with default settings.
Works well on a 7300 Mac with 96 megs of ram

Weakness:

The scan area seems to be as large as an entire 35mm frame but the carrier needs to be filed down to allow the frame edges to show. I don't want to take the chance of ruining the only carrier I have and extra negative carriers are not yet available for purchase, (I hope they will be soon).

I tried to buy a Nikon scanner even after reading reviews about the awesome ram requirements and software problems people were reporting, but I kept putting it off because I thought I would need a new computer as well. What pushed me to purchase was a $1000 birthday gift certificate to B&H from my wonderful wife. I went to the store ready for a Nikon and there were none to be had, a salesman showed me the Canon and I researched it starting with the reviews at this site. The scanner is a very good tool for my use and I am so far happy with my purchase. First I did not need a new computer to make 4000 dpi full frame scans 96 megs of ram on an older Mac with an added USB card works just fine and the supplied software is stable and useful. My target output for these scans is an Epson 2000P which gives me a 12x18 printable area on a 13x19 sheet a 4000 dpi scan fits perfectly in that space at 300 dpi+. The first scan I made of a Portra 160 NC negative with default settings was very close to where I wanted it to be and with a bit of this and that in Photoshop the file exceeded what the printer could produce. This scanner is capable of producing high quality files from color and b&w negs. My hope for the future is that it will continue to function for at least two years when something much better will be available for much less.

Customer Service

I made presales calls before I purchased and realized the Canon employees were not trained on this product but when I asked post purchase about the extra negative carrier I was put on a list for future notification of availability.
