Agfa APX 400 Black and White Film

Agfa APX 400 Black and White Film

DESCRIPTION

APX 400 provides remarkable performance and reliability even in bad light. Another benefit: this highly sensitive film can be pushed as high as a speed of ISO 1600/33°. This means that the applications for APX 400 are almost limitless: action, sports reporting, fashion and advertising. Films from the AgfaPhoto APX range are professional black-and-white films with high resolution and fine grain. They meet every requirement for precisely detailed documentation or stills of high aesthetic quality. But AgfaPhoto APX also expressively reproduces scenes of rapid action or moments of quiet. The arguments for this film are convincing: an even image on homogeneous surfaces, extremely sharp outlines, no breaks in critical areas of the motif, flexible speed and contrast, exemplary grey balance.

Strength:

Sharp pictures, great detail and contrast

Weakness:

Need to learn how to be right on with this film or you will get "middle-of-the-road" pictures at best.

I have shot over 30 rolls of this film and I love it! I went back and looked at my old proof sheets and noticed by the third time out (roll 4 and so on...) my picture look great. I am however planning to try Fuji's Neopan 1600. I just feel like trying something new.

Strength:

Good contrast and details, nice tonal range, grains perfectly acceptable.

Weakness:

None

I think this film has been seriously underated. The ratings here certainly do no justice to this product. It may lack the glitz of modern technology but it does what it is supposed to do very well. Like the Vivitar 283/285 flashes, they would not have been around for years for no reason. Good value. Will definitely use again.

Strength:

Easy to process, no too much grain, nice tone. Try tetenal emofin. A good standard film. Clear carrier.

Weakness:

Doesn't push well (Except with emofin)

OK for standard jobs. If I want NO grain, I use apx100 in my MF Rollei

Strength:

Good price. Good tonal range, contrast, and sharpness. Pushes well with full strength Xtol.

Weakness:

Somewhat grainy, but not ugly-like; pretty much what I'd expect from a conventional high-speed film.

It's perhaps an underrated film. I have very nice, CONSISTENT results at EI 320 and full strength Xtol. Even pushing it to 1600 worked well, much to my surprise. Just don't develop it with Rodinal if you shoot anywhere over EI 200...unless you love grain. It's become my only 400 film.
