Strength:

Nice clean packaging

Weakness:

fully automated, no manual settings, slow cycle

This is just another flash thats gonna cover you for general purpose work, its nothing too special if you want the truth, i think you can get yourself the sunpack 383 super which is better and more powerfull and cost about half the price, but the color of this canons light its pretty nice, even though its fully automated flash after working with you or i should say getting to know the flash its a quite simple operation, this thing doesn't even have a pc socket lol what was i thinking when i paid $140 for this flash i don't know, go buy yourself a nice flash for $140

Strength:

Ease of use
Cheap
E-TTL
Bounce
Works with Powershot Pro70

Weakness:

Not powerfull enough
No manual controls

I bought the flash for my ElanII, never got it to give good exposures, always underexposed.

I replaced it with a 550EX and have completely solved the problem on the ElanII.

Today this flash is used with my Powershot Pro70. Funny on the Pro70 it seems to give out too much light. I put a Lumiquest 80/20 bounce diffuser and it exposes right on.

Strength:

Works great with rebel 2000 and e-ttl. High speed synch if necessary.

Weakness:

same as above. difficult fill over large distances.

Excellent value for the money with many features. No swivel feature( I use a sto-fen omnibounce to overcome this). 540 is twice as expensive.

Model Reviewed: Speedlite 380EX Flash

Strength:

This flash integrates well with the Elan IIE that it is matched with. Requires little thought and can sinc at higher speeds. Good value for the money. I particularly enjoy using it outdoor for fill. This has improved my people shots in this environment considerably without making one aware that the flash is unmasking the shadow areas. ie: Blends well with natural light.

Weakness:

The biggest problem I've encountered is remembering not to overextimate its throw of light. I'm using it with Tamron's 28-200 aspherical lenses which when used at closer range (<25feet) it has great fill. However at greater distances you end up with washed out results from not enough flash. Discussed this with a more expereinced person than myself who reports that she too had tried this flash, but due to similar problems upgraded to the (540?) higher end canon flash which she indicates has much better fill at greater distance

Good overall flash for the buck, with the one criticism that it lacks the power to fill distant or larger areas. If I were to do it again I step up to the more expensive canon model and bite the bullet on the price. On the other hand if you remember this deficit when shooting it can be overcome.
