Canon 1.4x Teleconverter EF 35mm Converters

Canon 1.4x Teleconverter EF 35mm Converters

DESCRIPTION

Made of Canon's extra sharp Fluorite glass, the 1.4x Tele-converter will give a 40% increase in magnification to any lens attached to it, at the cost of only one f-stop of light transmission. A 200mm f/4 lens, for example, becomes a 280mm f/5.6 lens with the 1.4x Tele-converter behind it. No correction is required for either focusing or exposure operations, the camera does it all. (some focusing restrictions exist. please see specifications). As an added bonus, minimum focusing distance, for any lens, remains the same and that can really improve macro performance! Comes complete with hard case and strap.

Strength:

- image quality hardly affected
- cheaper than buying a 300mm lens
- small & light
- very high quality L class build

Weakness:

- price
- not for beginners

My long lens is a Canon70-200mm f/4L IS USM, arguably one of the best lenses in the Canon range. A very versatile lens that can be used for portraits, landscapes & some close-ups as well as its more traditional uses.

Some of my work involves golf action where I need to be far enough away from the players not to distract them. I fancied extending the reach of the lens & started to research extenders rather than invest in a 300mm lens. It was evident that a 1.4x converter was going to give superior results to the 2x model. My lens can now reach 280mm on my 40D which is over 400mm equivalent with the 1.6 crop factor.

The 14.x does lose you one stop of light & does give its best results stopped down. On the face of it, this would make it difficult to freeze golf action where a shutter speed in excess of 1000th/sec is required. But not really, especially if the light is good. Even when it's overcast, I found I was able to use a fast shutter speed thanks to the 3/4 stop counter effect of Canon's image stabilisation.

I'm sure the 2x converter would perform very well too provided it's used by someone who knows what they're doing & on a top quality lens. After all, if you magnify the optics, you also magnify any optical deficiencies. And if you make technical mistakes, they'll be magnified too!

There is no really visible loss of quality with the 1.4x but performs at its best when stopped down a point or two. Centre focus especially is very sharp. I would recommend it highly subject to the above comments & provided one can be bought a little cheaper than its normal price which is a bit high & the only reason I have given it a score of 4 but would have given it 4.5 if I could.

When I get the opportunity, I'd like to try the 2x model on its own, stacked on the 1.4x or stack mine with another 1.4x as suggested by another reviewer.

Strength:

Small and light, and does exactly what is needed. Easy to carry, fit and use.

Weakness:

Slight colour shift at times, which only takes a few seconds to rectify in PS.

An outstanding piece of equipment, turning in particular my 70-200mm zoom into a far more flexible item in my kitbag. As well as removing the need to buy (yet another) lens for longer reach shots, it is small, light and easy to fit. Optically there is obviously a slight price to pay but this is very rarely noticeable. Worth every penny spent. The results ahve been excellent.

Image quality - seems to have no negative effect at all on images.

It may be expensive but it doesn't seem to adversely effect the autofocus in any way and the image quality is superb used with my 70-200L

Picture quality (provided it''s used with a good lens) Build. Look - white!! Price (in B+H anyway).

Stunning extender. If you use L lenses, you should be using this too, and it''s 2x sister lens. I mainly use it with the Ef 300 2.8, and there''s no picture quality loss, or Af speed difference. Makes the 300 an excellent 420 F4. Can be picked up pretty cheap now that Canon have released the II version.

Strength:

Good optical quality
Well made
Matched to L series lenses

Weakness:

For what it is, none

Works beautifully with my 300mm F4L IS and 70-200 F4L. If you have L-series, don't compromise them with third party TCs. Use this. Only grip is with the enormous list price...
