Strength:

fully retained sharpness, no light loss

Weakness:

weight, more expensive than extension tubes

The poor man´s maxro lens is a telephoto lens combined with a close-up adapter. Unlike single lens constructions, the achromatic construction of the +2 dpt Canon closeup adapter does not cause visible chromatic aberration if used at long focal lengths. Thus, sharpness with the 500D is best amongst the available closeup adapters. This quality, however, comes at a reasonable price tag especially if diameters larger than 58mm are required. I use the 72mm version together with my 135/2.0 L USM for playing with shallow DOF also in the near-macro sector. I like the quality of this combination very much.
