Strength:
- SHARP (very very very sharp, better than my 70-200 f4 L, known as one of the sharpest lens of canon) - Contrast - Colour rendition - Flare (absent in every condition and also without hood) - 3d quality picture - USM - It's a Canon, you'll never have compatibility issues
Weakness:
- None but the hood (it's not included) Great lens. It beats the Sigma 105mm f2.8. I sold this one to take up the Canon USM version. You can do macro work and portaiture without changes in lenght. USM is very fast and sharpness is outstanding. I can finally achieve iper-sharp pictures with amazing contrast, wonderful colours and a very very very good three dimensional effect. The bokeh is wonderful and "sweet". The f2.8 max aperture allow you to keep eye clear and sharp and the nose out of focus. There isn't any flare, although i still haven't the hood. Strength:
Fixed front element; quiet focussing; finish and build; full time manual focus
Weakness:
focus hunting on some close-up conditions Beautifully sharp and good saturated colours. Quick focussing in bright conditions for people shots, but can hunt in close-up/macro work. Need soft lighting on portraits though, otherwise every little skin blemish is visible. I've used this for slides and prints with a range of films, and gives very good contrast on all types so far. The weight feels good on the EOS 33 I bought as my first ever AF camera this year(have an old F1N with 50 F1.4 which is still my true love!). Seemed expensive, because I haven't bought quality lenses for so long, but now feel it is cheap for the quality. ($1349 Australian) I would recommend this lens to anyone, especially those wanting to do some close-up work and having a type A EOS with a dedicated flash. The size of the lens seems to make people think you are serious, and actually gives you credibility with strangers when taking their pictures. Customer Service Support when buying was good, but still waiting for the hood. |

? I used the older version of this lens for years, "SHARP LENS ", I recently decided to purchase this version, "USM motor" the main reason, this lens has that "OPTICAL LOOK", that makes a lens special, this is a great lens, Customer Service quality Similar Products Used: 105 2.8 AFD Nikon macro lens "not as sharp as the Canon lenses or the Nikon 60 MACRO" I sent two of them back because lack of sharpness, Canon non USM 100 macro "SHARP" Nikon 60 2.8 AFD macro "S |

Strength:
Sharp, sharp, sharp. Length stays constant. Build quality.
Weakness:
Focus is slower than other USM primes. This is a stunning macro lens. I thought my Sigma 105mm f2.8 Macro was good but this is brilliant. I shot two films of orchids in Jersey (both natural light and ring-flash) and the slides looked very good on the light box ... but then I looked at them through the 8 x loupe ... every hair on the petals is amazingly sharp - I feel like I've become a better macro photograher overnight. It also makes a very fine 100mm lens for normal use although for this it is a bit bulky & heavy and while the focus speed is OK it doesn't match my other USM primes. Customer Service No needed. USM, 1:1, light, sharp
Weakness:
1.4, 2.0 teleconvertors can`t be use (without extension) Great lens for almoust everything. Fast and light. I mostly use it for insect macro work, and it`s paid for itself. Very sharp and accurate. Only thing I don`t like is no compatibility with 1.4 or 2.0 extenders. I simply put 12mm extension tube between body and extender and it`s working. I also both the collar and lens hood. Wish it would be included. Collar is kind of hard to use at start but once you get used to it`s working perfectly. Customer Service Never needed and hopefully never will. Fast lens. Lightweight. 1:1.
Weakness:
No hood supplied Sharp and fast lens. Excellent for macros as well as portraits. Superb color rendition. AF is fast and snappy, but for macro shots you probably should use MF. USM makes it very quick. Similar Products Used: Nikon 105 (with my ''''dark side'''' camera) |

Very versatile: Portraits, macro photos Extreemly sharp and well color balance Built quality is high Internal focus element USM
Weakness:
The tripod collar can be very useful but somehow is very expensive. Some say it can''t be used when the camera has a grip/bootster attached (never tried/seen yet It took me a while to decide between 85/1.8USM, 100/2USM and 100/2.8MacroUSM. I finally bought it and have been very happy with my decision. This lens performs so well for macro shoots. Yet it does great jobs for portrait and landscape photography. It isn’t designed for only macro shoots, believe me. In fact, don’t believe it if someone tells you that a macro lens can’t be used for portraits. The 85/1.8 and 100/2 could be nice to have too but I rarely shoot wide open anyway. Customer Service hopefully not! I once had Canon USA cleaned my 28-70/2.8L because it wouldn''t auto focus. Similar Products Used: Nikon 28-105 zoom (with macro ability) 70-200/2.8L + 500D close-up lens The 100/2.8MacroUSM won big time (That''s for sure) |

Strength:
Versatility. Sharpness.
Weakness:
Still figuring out the fine-tuned (approximate 1/2 stop) exposure compensation factors when using flash metering. After a year and a half of using this lens with a newly purchased Canon Elan 7 (back then), I remain to be extremely pleased. This is my favorite, most versatile lens. It delivers sharp images; it''s pretty dang fast for the price; and it''s easy to hand hold. I routinely use it for high quality head/bust portraits on a tripod-mounted camera. But I really love it''s versatility. I can take a close-up shot of a flower from a few inches away equally easy as capturing detail shots of architectural features on buildings that are a ways off. Customer Service Not needed as of yet. The lens, mounted on camera, accidentally fell from about 4.5'' onto a hard floor in a karaoke bar, shattering the UV filter mounted on the lens. The lens itself sustained no dam Similar Products Used: • Canon 28-90 zoom lens. • Fixed focal length, manual focus, medium telephoto lens for Olympus OM series cameras • Fixed focal length, manual focus, 50 mm, f/4 Macro lens for Olympus OM series came |

Price? Hood not included...urgh! No compatible with EF extenders...double urgh!! A fantastic lens! It took me quite a while to appreaciate this lens. Very convenient for me to switch from people, macro and abstract photography as I don''t have to switch lenses and adding/removing extension tube! Customer Service I haven''t tried it yet; hope that I''ll never need to try it :) Similar Products Used: None |
