Strength:

Terrific sharpness and contrast. Lens is well corrected for distortions all through the focusing range from 1:1 to infinity. Very solid construction and very well built.

Weakness:

The DC micromotor for autofocus is nothing short of crap. THis lens has died on me twice and Canon replaced the AF mechanism for me under warranty. If it happens again, I will throw the lens back at them and demand a replacement.

Optics and build are excellent. Autofocus motor is probably as bad as Sigma lenses. Dont waste your money on this. Get the new 100/2.8 USM macro instead.

Customer Service

Good, so far.

Strength:

Amazingly Sharp (5-5). The blur effects are astonishing (5-5). Superb for close up portraits (5-5), Sturdy thing.

Weakness:

When using as an allround 100mm lens from 20yards+ , it can sometimes fail in the overall sharpness.

I have had this lens for 2½ years and will never rid my self of it. Its sharpness makes me a picky person, when comparing other Canon lenses. Great for portraits and small objects.

Strength:

Focal length is just right for different location shots. Crisp Macro work and Portraits!

Weakness:

Automatic Focus. I am not a huge fan of any auto focus lens.

I have had this lens for 6 months and my photos have never been more crisp. I have produced 35mm images that look like 4x5. I have used other macro set ups in the past and have never gotten the results I have with this lens. It is worth the price.

Strength:

As everyone here said, SHARP!

Weakness:

slow AF (although I use MF all the time for macro.)

A very sharp lens. It's really nice to have this lens in the field for macro and also landscape if you do not want to carry your regular 100mm f2. AF is quite slow. Very often if the focus limter is set to full range, the lens will really "hunt" for the whole range and still not getting the right focus [that's especially true if you are getting close.] That's not really a problem for me because I use MF for all my macro shots.

really sharp for closeup work, as others say.

Weakness:

very slow auto focus, non USM. noisy.
does not say any where about the exposure compensation when focused close. For example, you shoud add 2 stops at 1:1 distance.

excellent except the slow auto focus

Strength:

VERY SHARP! This is a near perfect lens for most macro work, and for general photography as well.

Weakness:

A little heavy, no USM.

I find that I use this lens a good deal of the time. Unless I need a different focal length it is near perfect. Use the focus limiter for macro work to speed up focusing (USM would be nice).

Very sharp lens throughout entire f-stop range. Solidly built.

Weakness:

Slow focusing

This could be designated an L lens. Very nice sharp lens. You can't get much better than this. Get it with the ML3 ringlight!

Strength:

Opically one of the best lenses that Canon produces ... very sharp

Weakness:

A bit heavy and on the large side

I just acquired the new Canon 100 Macro USM model and the first few rolls of slides that I received from the photo lab using a Canon Elan IIe and Velvia film were astonishing; this is one of my favorite Canon lenses and very highly recommended.

Strength:

This is a very sharp lens. This lens is an excellent macro lens and does a good job as a portrait lens.

Weakness:

A bit heavy and the auto focus is slower then a USM lens.

I use it for macro work only now since getting the Canon 85mm f1.8. I used to do portrait work with it and it certainly does a good job at it. The Canon 85mm f1.8 is just much lighter and faster focusing. The 100mm f2.8 macro lens is superb in terms of image quality and construction.

Strength:

Very sharp, allows more light than a 50. Accurate exposures. Doesn't need a hood. Great for macro or portrait work. I can take flowers at 1/250, F16 and let the 550 flash work out the exposure. Amazing. With an EOS 1N of course.

Weakness:

None . My favorite lens.

You must usually use a soft focus filter or effect , for portrait work. They just made a 100Macro with USM, I always use manual anyway. I won't be trading this one.

Customer Service

none.
