Strength:

Very sharp lens. Lightweight and very fast focusing. Works well with canon 1.4X and 2.0X converters. Great screw in lens hood design.

Weakness:

None

A great telephoto lens. Easy to carry due to its light weight. The light color paint helps control thermal expansion in bright sunlight and keeps the lens from getting hot. (compared to black lenses) Comes with a tripod coller and a nice case.

Strength:

Light weight, fast focusing, and very sharp images. Great built in lens hood.

Weakness:

This lens takes fantastic pictures in terms of sharpness and color rendition. I was frustrated with all of the Canon zooms that included 300mm and this lens beats them all. I love this lens and the resulting images I get with it. I have taken pictures with a 1.4X telconverter and these are still sharp and make great prints.

Just wanted to add about others comments on the hood design. When you pull it all the way out, it threads into place, locking it in the extended position. IMO, this is the best hood design I have used.

Strength:

SHARP !!!! Super contrast, great color, FAST Silent focusing.

Weakness:

None at all. One of the few items in life that has never given me any grief at all.

I have shot it side by side with the 300 f2.8L, and the results are d*** close to one another. I had seriously planned to buy the f2.8, but used the money elsewhere and am pretty satisfied (especially when hiking). AF with a TC 2.0 would be nice though. It works great with Canon's TC 1.4.... I never hesitate to use it when needed, as optically its like they are made for each other. Great deals on em' used too. I didn't feel the IS added enough value when I bought it, so i got the plain version. I rarely, if ever grimace wishing for the IS.

Weakness:

Lens hood is distracting

I got this lens at a good price. It is very fast and sharp. I love it.Tripod mount and hood can be distracting, but I can live with it. Performance of this lens can make you forget about the minor details.

Strength:

umm construction?
the envious looks?

Weakness:

wide open performance sucks, and stopped down not much better than consumer zoom.

I bought this lens second hand. I've never had any problem with S/H Canon gear before. This lens was immaculate too. Unfortunately at f4 this lens is pretty bad. At 5.6 it's about the same as a consumer zoom at f8. At f8 it's a slightly better again. Basically if this is expected performance, this lens is terrible value for money. A real disappointment for my first L series lens...

Weakness:

Hood becomes inconvenient with wear (Will not stay extended)

A bargain introduction to pro telephoto lenses. Not too slow and with L lense build and performance.

The best bargain in the Pro L series. Poor "Tim Heppell" either is blind or got a bad used lens. This lens is tack sharp even wide open! Great with the 1.4 teleconverter for a 420mm 5.6 lens as well. The perfect first L lens for those on a budget.

Another best kept secret of Canon. I now have narrowed my bag to the following 50 1.4 100F2 70-200F4 and 300F4 with 1.4 TC and Hasselblad 903 SWC for any wide angle.
I can shoot almowst anything without limitation.I ahve tried all other combination and cost have never been a factor in my decision. This lens is fanstatic value and I would call it power to weight ratio / performence is very high. IS version just adds to the weight and only satisfy ones ego to have the latest and the best. I bought both and used both for 4 weeks. In the end there is NO performance difference with slides under a 40x microscope. Only difference is weight and more money / cash in my pocket. I returned it for other equipment.

Strength:

It's fast, it's sharp and the body is very solidly built. Full-Time-Manual focusing.

Weakness:

None that I have found yet...

I have shot PLENTY of film with this lens and I'm VERY satisfied. I have shot conferences, people, wildlife and sports, and even with moderate clouding, I get 1/350th sec or faster at f/4 with 100ASA film (I never use anything faster than 100ASA). The second hand value of this lens doesn't fall much (unless you run over the lens with a tank), so it's a GREAT investment both in buying it second hand and in selling it (and there are PLENTY of people who want to buy one of these puppies).

I will NOT sell mine in quite a while... It it was possible, I might even marry it! (This lens really deserves a 6 out of 5 in both categories!)
